Super Paper Mario Review

Super Paper Mario Screen

I sat down and spent a lot of time with Super Paper Mario the past few days. Not having a “next-gen” Mario game with my Wii has killing me, so I had to pick this one up.

I’ve heard a lot of people griping about the visuals in the game not looking amazing. I think Nintendo was going for a distinct look with the game, and in my opinion, they pulled it off very well. You really feel the paper quality to every part of the game, from the trees to the warp pipes.

The controls feel terrific with the Wii-mote playing in the classic style. Switching to 3D is very intuitive and allows you to pick up some cool power ups and such. You end up using 3D more than you think initially, which is fun.

The only gripes I have with the game is all the reading. I understand it’s based on an RPG, but why not include some voice overs? You get the occasional “Ugh” from Mario, but that’s about it. Maybe some more talking from the characters?

Overall, I give the game an 8.5 out of 10. It’s very fun and provides a lot of depth.

Super Paper Mario Character Switching

I’ve been pretty much obsessing with Super Paper Mario lately. Almost as much as Guitar Hero.

This video really shows off a cool feature of the game. You can switch characters at any point mid-level to get things done.

Did I mention I love this game?

Super Paper Mario Recreates the Original

I think everyone can agree that the original Super Mario Brothers for the NES is one of the greatest platformers ever. I still play it for fun every once in a while. Nintendo is paying homage to one of my favorite boards in the game, World 1-2, by having it recreated exactly in Super Paper Mario. This time, you get to see it in a whole new light, as you can switch your views. Looks absolutely amazing! I can see Super Paper Mario taking up just as much of my time as Guitar Hero…

Mario Stikers: Charged Online Multiplayer for Wii

Mario Strikers ImageSo we’re going to get a true online multiplayer game for the Wii that people actually want to play (come on, did you really want to play Pokemon?). Mario Strikers: Charged will offer up to 4 player matched online, both ranked and unranked, as well as leaderboards.

The game will be released May 25 in Europe, with no official release date for the US yet. I would expect shortly after that.

Now if Nintendo would only do something about those insanely stupid friend codes…

Super Paper Mario Gameplay Trailer

The new Mario game is being released for the Wii today and I have to tell you, it’s looks DAMN good. I can see myself putting in some serious time with this game.

Check out some of the great gameplay…

Mario and Sonic Team Up for Olympics

Mario and Sonic Olympics Image
In a move that no one ever thought would happen, Mario and Sonic will be sharing the same screen. Nintendo and Sega are teaming up to make a game with characters from both franchises for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The basis of the game is to compete is all events that will take place at the 2008 Olympics. I think Sonic has an unfair advantage in all the running competitions. Maybe a Koopa Troopa will break his leg, Nancy Kerrigan style.

On the Nintendo side, the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto will be making some large contributions to the game. Of bigger note, Sega will have their Sega Sports team working on the game, and not Team Sonic. Hopefully Team Sonic just gets fired. They’ve turned a great franchise into poo with their recent Sonic games. Let’s see if Sega Sports can turn that around, with Shiggy’s help.

The game will hit for the Wii and DS later this year.

Mario Strikers Charged Footage

Nintendo showed some footage at GDC of their new Mario sports game, Mario Strikers Charged for the Wii. You take to the pitch as all the characters you’ve come to know and love from the Mario series. It’s similar to the Gamecube title Super Mario Strikers from 2005, but adds some prettier graphics and Wii controls. You use both the Nunchuck and Wiimote for this game. As you can see in the video, you get to use the motion sensing controls of the Wiimote in some places, which looks both cool and tough to do. The game is scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2007.

Super Mario Galaxy Footage

Nintendo showed some footage today of their new flagship franchise for the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy. The graphics look great. Who says Wii games can’t look that good? I’m not all that excited for this game though. The gameplay of jumping around planets seems weird to me. I think they need to get back to basics with Mario. Either way, good old Shiggy told everyone that we’ll be able to play Super Mario Galaxy in 2007. Giddy up.

Anyway, check the video…
