I’m sure by now that a many of you know SMB2s dark little secret (though probably less so these days..damned information age). In 1988 the release of the newest Mario game was in fact not a Mario game at all. But a conversion by Nintendo of a game called Yume Kōjō:Doki Doki Panic (“Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic”)- a game based on a story of a family - Papa, Imajin, Lina, and Mama - go out on in adventure in an Arabian novel (known as ‘Subcon’ in SMB2). And of course people feel two ways about this: those who believe that because of the characters were Mario based that it was a true Mario Game. Then there are those who believe that because the game was not designed to be a Mario game from the ground up, it didn’t warrant a ‘real’ Mario label. I suppose both sides have a point. Although Miyamoto did have a heavier involvement in DDP than the actual SMB2 in Japan (the lost levels here).
As for myself - I hate to say it, but I lean towards the ‘not a Mario game’ slot. For me it has to do with the initial intent (but hey, that’s me).
This is perhaps one of the craziest Super Mario Bros. videos I have ever seen and I have seen quite a few. Watch as this guy makes some of the most insanely, perfectly timed jumps ever. Trying to describe the sheer skill does not bring it justice. Take a gander (yes I said gander) and let me know what you think?
Why is it that making a good movie can not translate into making a good movie based video game? There is plenty of story based on the movie script and an obvious fan base already established, all the developers need to do is put that into a console and keep the game play fun and they would have an instant winner. Instead we get failed attempt after failed attempt of miserable movie inspired game.
Look at a great movie like Iron Man that unfortunately was treated to a sub par video game rendition, the sad part is that Iron Man the game was probably on e of the better video game adaptations of a movie. Look at any Batman, Superman, Fantastic Four or X-Men title, a poor excuse for a game for the most part.
Here are the top 9 worst movie video games:
E.T. - Maybe we give this one a pass because of the capabilities of the Atari 2600 back in the day?
Fight Club - Why go away from a story as good as Fight Club?
Planet of the Apes - Okay this was destined to fail, the movie was beat IMO
Jaws Unleashed - Open world shark attacks sound fun but prove the opposite.
Reservoir Dogs - No Mr. Pink, why? This bloody movie just became a bloody mess of a game.
Napolean Dynamite - Why bring Liger action 3 years after the popularity of the movie died out?
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Sigh, if people could fly then why walk at all?
The Great Escape - Way to wait 40 years after this movie was good, suddenly Napolean Dynamite is a genius move.
Enter The Matrix - The first movie was greatness anything after that was a travesty.
Lets also not forget the converse also holds true, a video game inspired movie is almost always destined to fail as well, Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Doom and anything Uwe Boll has ever made. This does not give a good impression for new movie ideas like the new Bioshock movie that has been slated. Why can’t a writer take a game like Zelda and the many different plots that it contains and make a good film? Let’s imagine a good Bioshock or GTA movie together, one where the game play elements and storyline are held true and done well, instant blockbuster hits, no doubt about it.
We had brought you a couple of other fusion videos of Super Mario fused with Mega Man and Halo, but here he is with the the cast of Doom. These mods are fantastic and would actually make for very fun games. Also Hammer Bros. suit FTW easily, I don’t recall that suit from the games.
So you thouhgt you had heard every kind of rendition of the Super Mario Brothers theme song? Well think again, these guys have thought outside of the box, shit they tore the box a new @sshole and then pissed on it. THis has to be the most creative use of empty glass bottles and a remote controlled car I have ever witnessed. Take a look at htis video and wonder how long it took them to prepare this, also note the security guard at the end with his arms crossed just staring at the little remote controlled car whizzing by. Gold!
Mix in some classic Mario sounds into a fully customized Halo map and you get something special. See how much work was put into making this video look and sound like a level out of Super Mario Bros using the map editor form Halo 3. Pretty impressive and I have to say that hearing Master Chief make the fireball sound from Mario was entertaining.
This is one of the hardest Super Mario World SNES mods I have ever seen, not to mention one of the best runs as well. This guy makes every correct jump and times each spin jump perfectly, I would have been dead about 10 seconds in or I would have broken a controller in frustration. Watch this!
Here is the big list of top 100 selling titles over the last 12 months. Pretty interesting to see what the top ten games sold are, especially with FIFA beating Madden, COD4 beating out Halo 3, Pokemon still being in the mix after all these years and Brain Age coming in strong to round out the top 10.
10 - Brain Age 2: More Brain Training in Minutes a Day
9 - Super Mario Galaxy
8 - Assassin’s Creed
7 - Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
6 - Need for Speed Pro Street
5 - Madden 08
4 - FIFA 08
3 - Guitar Hero 3
2 - Halo 3
1 - Call of Duty 4
Whoever created this has entirely too much time on their hands. But we get to enjoy it either way. Check out level 1-2 of Super Mario Brothers recreated in Legos. Awesome
This is something you just need to see. This is a rare user vid that is worth watching. Imagine the world of Mario infested with the Halo Universe. You get this. If this was an actual game for sale, you know people would buy it. Granted the graphics are way out of the times, well, thats not the point here. Very cool.
We're like Spaceballs... we're making Loot Ninja everything. Coming soon we'll have hats, shirts, hoodies, possibly banana hammocks if one Editor has his way...
