This was something that we thought would be showed at the Nintendo E3 press conference, but was overlooked, Mario Super Sluggers. I have to admit that I am not terribly interested in another Mario inspired sports title but if you watch the trailer there are some interesting elements like the teamwork home-run steal and the mini games. The mini games give the game a different angle instead of just an over the top baseball game, almost a Mario Party style game. Even with that being said I doubt this will be more than a rental for me especially if there is no online matches.
FIFA is a very popular title worldwide much like soccer/futbol is, here in the United States it isn’t as mainstream, but the video games do well. EA recently announced FIFA 09 and what would be crammed into it and it sounds very impressive.
One thing that I am curious about is the fact that each FIFA game is unique? There are different game modes in each specific console version, so although FIFA 09 is multi-platform it will provide different experiences. The Wii version is scheduled to get a game mode where you can use your Miis.
The PS3 is also getting a unique game mode as well as the Xbox 360, but these haven’t been named just yet. I would imagine that these two systems will have something to do with the cameras and face mapping or perhaps for the the PS3 maybe HOME integration?
Here is the official press release:

NBA Ballers: Chosen One is a tough game to review in that it brings utter dread to my mind. Since EA and Midway both have the rights to make NBA games, they have entered into a gentleman’s agreement to skip every other year and let the other make their game to rule the hardwood courts. Too bad NBA Street is the only one worth playing.
The plot to NBA Ballers “The Chosen One” is this: apparently every year after the NBA play-offs, the top players in the NBA decide to take it to the streets and compete in a street ball tournament. The winner of this tournament is then dubbed the “Chosen One.” Well where do I sign up for this prestigious honor? If you’re looking for a good plot, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for Chuck D, then step right up. Chuck D. Really? WTF? Yes, he is in there as the announcer for their version of SportsCenter, but don’t look for any Emmy winning speeches here. Looks like controlling your video game with your thoughts is not as far from reality as some may think. A couple of companies have already worked on moving digital objects in a video game and then applied that to even controlling robots. This is pretty awesome and would make for some awesome gaming potential, wonder how this could be applied to FPS games and sports games, just use your thoughts to move and fire.
Most people have heard the old saying, “go big or go home”, but this is taking it a bit far. Someone took their Wii and connected it to a giant screen and decided to get some rounds of Wii Sports in.
So many questions come up like, why play Wii tennis instead of something good, where is the sensor bar and I wonder what some giant Pr0n would look like on this thing?
It looks like the Wii is going ot milk Mario until he is bone dry, yet another Mario based title will be launched this Spring… Mario Super Sluggers. Mario goes baseball after he gets done racing around in his Kart apparently. It should prove to be interesting since the Wiimote lends itself perfectly to a baseball game, but I can only hope that it is better than the Wii Sports baseball and MLB PowerPros already released.
Here is the official Nintendo press release:

So it looks like the newest Madden will hits the streets August 12th in North America and will also bring in a collector’s edition as well. The collector’s edition is the 20th anniversary edition and is scheduled to include “full versions of both Madden NFL 09 and the all-new NFL Head Coach 09, exclusive classic Madden NFL gameplay, and an extensive library of exclusive bonus video content.”
Not sure if the anniversary edition sounds all that great unless you are a hardcore football simulation fan that want to get your hand’s on Head Coach? Not sure what they mean by exclusive Madden NFL gameplay, I wonder if they plan on including some of the original madden game son a separate disc?

Looks like Sega is hot and heavy for the Olympic games and is already announcing their intent to develop exclusively Beijing 2008, the official Olympic games video game. It is slated to have over 35 events in it, which is pretty decent, but I just don’t think the Olympics really translates well into a video game format. Maybe there will be some online Olympics and you can win medals? That would be kind of cool.

I know that Nintendo is trying to cash in on all the casual gamers of the world as well as all those people that think they can lose weight while playing games, but I just don’t see it. Someone who is overweight will not become skinny playing DDR or Wii Bowling or Wii Fit, they will do so by eating less and working out. Although playing these games can make you sweat, especially if you are out of shape, these are not valid ways to work out.
There have been quite a few studies performed that talk about how playing games and what physically can be achieved, here is a piece of a study:
A study at Liverpool John Moores University in early 2007 echoes his sentiment. Researchers found that playing Wii Sports for an average of 12 hours per week could result in burning over 1800 calories, although they’re quick to point out that such an activity should not replace traditional exercise.
OK I guess if you play for 12 hours a week you wold expect to burn some calories but just to put things in perspective if I take a 20 minute run I can easily burn 300 calories, so in 6 short runs that would equal 2 hours of exercise you would burn the equivalent amount of calories. Read More »
I got mine in the mail (2 of them) on Tuesday (10/23/07).
The case definitely gives the Wiimote some much needed bulk, because those
damn things are too tiny in my opinion.
They put extra padding on the front, which is great in case of a collision
with an object like a laptop (sorry taz8080).
The back end has a cap over the connector slot, in case you’re not using the
nunchuck, the plug is protected from dust and whatnot.
My only problem with it is the sides, right around the middle of the
Wiimote. They left that area with rather thin rubber/silicone, so it’s not
snug there. I tried a few of the Wii sports games with it, and on hard
swings, it sometimes felt a little loose in the middle.
For a freebie, I give it 4/5.
If I had to pay for it, 3/5.
It is an interesting idea to add protection to your Wiimote and I htink i wll send out ot grab a few of these. And yes laptop + swinging Wiimote = no good. LOL
