Review: Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (Xbox 360, PS3)

Developers: Treyarch/Shaba Games Publisher: Activision Release Date: 10/21/2008

A SPIDER-MAN GAME YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO PLAY…WHO KNEW?!

Wow. As Spider-Man swings through the cityscape of NYC, you can actually hear the wind whistling past him – sometimes no music at all is the most exhilarating thing to experience in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

Then again, if it was, it would have a whole lot to contend with in the game. No movie license, an original story, and some RPG elements are just what the doctor ordered for the series. I was as excited as I ever was when I heard this was coming out (except for Spider-Man 3…ewwww). But the moment I got the game’s acrobatic and intense style wrapped around my head, it was Spider-Man bliss.

This is what the past games should have been, folks. Let’s jump on in.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Debut Trailer

Another free-roaming Spider-Man game is coming our way. Web of Shadows looks to be a Spidey vs. Venom ordeal, which could make for a damn cool game. The game is being developed by Treyarch, the people behind Call of Duty 3. I hope the camera issues that plagued Spider-Man 3 get worked out for this release, because that really ruined what would have been a pretty damn fun game.

Spider-Man 3 Now Available for PSP

Spider-Man 3 Black Suit Swing Image

Activision sent over a press release letting us know that Spider-Man 3 for the PSP is now available.

In Spider-Man 3 for the PSP system, players must draw upon Spider-Man’s unique combat and powerful, upgradeable moves to protect the citizens of Manhattan by defeating arch-rivals from the blockbuster film as well as classic Marvel villains during missions and epic boss battles. In the PSP system exclusive Conquest Mode, missions must be completed by dawn, and if successful, players will be rewarded generously with Hero Points, which allow them to upgrade and customize their Spider-Man skills.

I was disappointed with Spider-Man 3 on the PS3, after really loving the first two movie-based games. Hopefully the camera has been re-worked for the PSP, which was the biggest issue with the console title.

Spiderman: Friend or Foe Demo

spiderman-foe.jpg

Spiderman games are like Afghanistan; bombed out and depleted. No, seriously, this game is not that bad, but it fails to impress. You can play co-op and add a sidekick which can either be Venom or Green Goblin. The controls are not bad, but Venom is by far the strongest of the three. The graphics look like a very good Xbox game, hardly next gen. You play through a level against some kind of robots and a boss battle that is just frustrating. There seem to be power ups and the game encourages teamwork, but the fun level is way low. Its a quick download so its worth at least checking out, but I would not add this to your Christmas list.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe Demo Now Available for Xbox 360

Spider-Man: Friend of Foe Screen 3

A demo for Activision’s new Spider-Man title is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. From the description on the Marketplace:

Join Spider-Man and one of his Sidekicks in Co-Op or Single Player action on the rain-slick rooftops of downtown Tokyo.

The demo for Spider-Man: Friend or For weighs in at 431.29 MB and is available everywhere except Asia. I’m anxious to see how the gameplay, especially the camera, work in the game.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe New Screens

Spider-Man: Friend of Foe Screen 1

Activision sent over some new screens taken from the Xbox 360 version of Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. The game is set to ship October 2nd for every platform you can imagine.

I really like the cartoony nature of the graphics. I just hope the gameplay holds up, because Spider-Man 3 was pretty crappy.

Review: Spider-Man 3 Collector’s Edition for PS3

Spider-Man 3 Black Suit Swing Image

Spider-Man 3 had me intrigued since the minute it was announced. You could probably even say before it was announced, since we all knew it would be coming along side the movie. Especially after playing the terrific Spider-Man 2 game, this was highly anticipated. After reading some previews of the game, I became pretty skeptical about the game. Some of my fears were dashed, some weren’t. Here is the breakdown of some of the facets of Spider-Man 3 Collector’s Edition:

Presentation and Graphics: The first thing I was hit with was the loading screen, where the game is pre-loaded onto the hard drive. The fonts here looked like they came out of a Windows 3.1 installation application, with very simple backgrounds. I think for the “next-gen” of gaming, something more elaborate is needed. Let’s face it, the graphics are nothing to write home about here. This is especially evident during cut-scenes. Character faces are jagged, have huge bug eyes, and have the worst facial expressions you can think of. The graphics of the city aren’t that bad, and when roaming the city, they aren’t too bad either. 2.5 of 5
