Raven Squad from SouthPeak Games turned out to be a hard game for me to review. The game combines real-time strategy elements from up above and shoot you in the face first-person shooter gameplay. I normally don’t go for the real-time strategy games and don’t have any in my collection. I typically lean towards more first-person shooter games. How do you review a game that does both while most other games out there do one or the other? How do you compare it? I will tell you after the jump as I suffer through Raven Squad on the 360 and lived to tell about it. Read on.

If you are crazy enough to jump out of a plane sans parachute then you are fit for Section 8. Section 8 is about crazy recon troopers who wear bitchin’ armor and jump from orbit to the battlefield. You are said recon trooper, a futuristic paratrooper who is probably slightly unstable and armed to the teeth. The new first person shooter published by Southpeak and developed by Timegate has a few tricks that make it stand out from other titles in the genre.
“Burning in” is the games trademark gimmick. That’s deploying from orbit to the battlefield, allowing the player to select their class and their spawn location. The demo map consisted of three areas to capture or control. These areas have base defenses in forms of Anti-Air and Ground Turrets to lay hate on players attempting to “burn in” or spawn too far behind enemy lines. I call it a gimmick because it is reminiscent of Medal of Honor Airborne, with the exception that the class system in Section 8 is extremely customizable. Vehicles of a few varieties and weapons of the standard pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, machine gun, explosives are available plus a jetpack, which is always fun.

If you’re looking for a fun 2D shooter on the Nintendo DS, Big Bang Mini from SouthPeak Games is your answer. For a cool $20, you’re getting a good deal of quick pick up and play content. Easy to pick up and hard to put down, I had a blast with Big Bang Mini (pun intended).
There is a very fun feel to the game with its graphical style. Each of the game’s nine stages is based in a real location, such as New York City, Rio de Janeiro and Paris. The stylized backgrounds and great music give each stage a very upbeat feeling and you’ll enjoy watching what’s going on in the background as much as listening to the tunes.
