NOW WITH KRATOS – WITH NO EXPLANATION WHATSOEVER!!!
Kratos + Soul Caliber = Awesome. Having been a fan of the series since it first hit on the PlayStation in 1997, I approached this entry with a cautious eye – portable versions of established fighting franchises are hit-and-miss at best. And as excited as I was to play as God of War’s protagonist, I was equally as concerned with the history of games built around a franchise tie-in, which in many cases leads to releases with shiny looks and no real meat to the gameplay or story. That being said, let’s see where Soul Caliber: Broken Destiny ends up.
Finally is all I can say. Soul Caliber 2 and 3 were on the cusp of the online play generation and missed the boat. The fourth installment will be promptly on board though.
As confirmed to 1up, you’ll now be able to play Soul Caliber IV online on all consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3, currently). You’re also going to be use your created characters in online play, which is a huge move for the game.
“What’s changed this time round is that the next-gen platforms have network infrastructure already in place,” says Soulcalibur IV Director Katsutoshi Sasaki. “We’ve heard from fans that they really want the game to be online, so we figured that, with the current environment, we really couldn’t make SC4 without online play.”
Score one for gamers. But, with the introduction of create-a-character in Soul Calibur III and its assured revamping in Soulcalibur IV, will these customizations go to waste? “We definitely want to allow users to fight with their customized characters during online play. But we’re unsure whether or not you’ll be able to trade characters with friends.”
Namco will finally give us what we have been waiting for and that is the fourth and perhaps final installment of the ground breaking fighting series, Soul Caliber. The game will debut sometime in 2008 and Namco promises that new characters, a new fighting system, interactive environments, as well as other surprises will await us. Here is a little teaser video they have released. I stress the word tease. Makoto Iwai, exec. VP and COO at Namco Bandai Games America released this statement:
Soulcalibur has been a cornerstone franchise for Namco Bandai Games and this latest edition will build upon its legacy of groundbreaking fighting experiences. With Soulcalibur IV, long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise will be amazed by its visual beauty and intense, pulse pounding weapon combat.
It looks as if the wait is over for a new version of Soul Caliber. According to 1up.com, there will be a sneak peek at a next gen installment of the legendary fighting series. Here is a quote direct from EGM:
“If you’re hankering for a virtual fistfight, top-quality options about — the Virtua Fighter, Tekken, and Dead or Alive franchises all offer satisfying punch-up action. But if you’re truly looking to give your opponent something to cry about, it’s all about wielding sharpened steel, and nothing beats Namco Bandai’s Soul Calibur series for weapon-based fighting thrills. In our world-exclusive preview, we’ll reveal the future direction of this beloved series.”
Anyone not excited for this should have their pulse taken immediately.
