If you’ve never played SingStar on the PS2, it’s a karaoke rhythm game where you get points for singing the proper notes to your favorite songs. The first four editions, Pop, Rock, Amped and 80s, have been enormous hits throughout the world. To add to the great series, Sony recently released an expansion for the 90s, one of the greatest and cheesiest eras in music. Here is a breakdown of some of the facets of SingStar 90s for the PS2:
Presentation and Graphics: SingStar games feature the original videos of each song where available. This proves hilarious for the 90s edition. You get the parachute pants and grunge flannel. Otherwise, it’s standard fare for a SingStar game. There’s not much needed in terms of graphics for a karaoke game. The upcoming PS3 version will pretty it up, but the PS2 versions only have white backgrounds with the video playing in the middle of the screen. 6 of 10

Those of you lucky enough to have the PS3 version of SingStar on PS3 already in Europe have been blessed with a huge update to the SingStar Store. A total of 67 songs were added, with such hits (in English) as “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness and “Heroes” by David Bowie. Of the 67 tracks, 46 of them are English, with the remainder being filled out by German, Italian, Norwegian, and Spanish songs.
Unfortunately, though, many of these songs were in previous SingStar releases on the PS2. I guess if you want some next-gen music videos and the ability to upload your own video performance, you’ll have to buy them again. All of these new songs will go live on March 7th, so save up some funds for buying a lot of songs. Check out the full list after the jump.

We got a chance to sit down and play some Singstar 90s, which is coming in March 2008 for the PS2. The game plays and looks exactly like the previous Singstar titles, which is to say it’s a hell of a lot of fun. What intrigues me the most of the setlist for the game. Holy dookers people. This has to be the best tracks of any Singstar title to date. Here’s a sampling of what you can rock out to in March:
- Hold On – Wilson Phillips
- Tub Thumping – Chumbawumba
- Motown Philly – Boyz II Men
- I Wanna Sex You Up – Color Me Bad
- More Than Words – Extreme
- U Can’t Touch This – MC Hammer
- Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice
- Unskinny Bop – Poison
- Baby Got Back – Sir Mix A Lot
No matter how much I wanted to make Sony’s Alyssa Casella perform a few of these, I resisted the urge to make her sing that early in the morning. Me on the other hand, I’ll be rocking out like a mofo come March. Unskinny Bop for the win.

Lots and lots of beer + 8 people + 3 editions of SingStar until 4am = a crapload of fun. If you’ve never played SingStar, you need to experience the fun.
I’m going to go back to sleep now since I have a raging headache. That, and I saw the debacle known as today’s Philadelphia Eagles uniforms.

Sony sent over the newest editions in the SingStar line, 80s and Amped, for us to review. I spent a bit of time with each and really like the song selections.
If you’ve never played SingStar, it’s a karaoke rhythm game for 1-8 people. You have 2 microphones where you have to sing, in time, with the lyrics on the screen. You get points for how well you do, similar to all rhythm games.
The 80s edition got me ready to rock out with some high socks and sweatpants, but my closet was empty so I didn’t have a wardrobe change. My favorite songs in 80s are “The Final Countdown” by Europe, “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” by Wham, and “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. The Amped edition brings in some of the greatest alternative and rock songs. Favorites there are “Love and Memories” by O.A.R., “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison, and “Alive” by Pearl Jam.
I’ll have a full review for both in the middle of next week as I spend more time with the game. I’ve got some beer and tequila ready for a SingStar party this weekend.
