Review: Saints Row 2 (Xbox 360)

This opening sentence is supposed to be about how Saints Row 2 and every other open world style game is a clone of GTA IV.  I am not going to touch on that at all in this review for a couple of reasons.  First, you have heard it all before, so what’s the point?  Second, I have never actually finished GTA IV so I don’t have the ability to compare and contrast the two games.  Saints Row 2 is new to me and for that reason I get to take it for what it is, I consider this an advantage.

Saints Row 2’s storyline picks up where the first one left off.  Your character has been blown up and in a coma for the last couple of years.  The game begins with your character getting busted out of the hospital while teaching the basic controls and back-story.  When your character gets out, he realizes his gang has been shattered and it will have to be rebuilt to take back the city of Stilwater.

Saints Row 2 Co-op Trailer

Saints Row 2 is getting a cool co-op mode. THQ made a virtual McCain and Obama for the video, too. I’m really liking the marketing campaign for this game. Anyway, you’ll get full drop-in/drop-out support and you can play the full campaign with a buddy. Good stuff.

Go ahead, tell the video you were born in 1905.

Saints Row 2: Tera Patrick Dev Diary

No one believes for a minute that porn starlet Tera Patrick is going to bring anything of consequence to Saints Row 2. Their idea of using her “talents” to promote the game is smart. I am all for unnecessary nudity, but it seems like THQ is trying too hard here. They have a lot to do to make people choose over GTA IV. Its going to take a little more than a PG-13 trailer.

Porn Star Working with Saints Row 2 Developers

Tera Patrick

Tera Patrick, better known as an adult film “actress” has joined up with the Saints Row 2 Dev Team. No one knows the exact reason, but we can safely bet that its to add to the game’s marketability. I heard somewhere that gamers like porn, not sure how true that is, but I’ll get some answers. She will be at Comic Con in San Diego to look hot and cocktease all the fanboys staring at her and making memory deposits in their spank banks. The GTA IV craze has somewhat diminished, but I can’t see Saints Row 2 even coming close to matching up with Rockstar’s instant masterpiece.

Saints Row Takes on Grand Theft Auto

GTA is the big kid in the sandox and Saints Row is throwing some dirt in their eyes. GTA IV’s unparalled success has made Saints Row 2 seem like an afterthought, so much so that the game was “delayed” for tech reasons.  Is this a friendly shot over the bow or a little brother spitting in his older brothers Count Chocula? Frankenberry FTW.

Saints Row 2 Delayed

saints-row-2.jpg

It looks as if you are going to have even more time to enjoy GTA IV.  Saints Row 2 has been pushed back from Aug 26 to Oct 14. The reason cited is marketing issues and product quality. I’ll tell you the reason: GTA IV is maybe the best game off all time and Saints Row 2 pales in comparison.  I played Saints Row and did not like it all that much. It had its good points, but was and is a GTA clone. If THQ wants to sell this game, they have to make very sure that it does not suck uber balls. If this game is not close to at least a 8.5-9, the franchise is dead.

Saints Row 2 Website Launched, Release Date Announced

The “other” sandbox adventure is making news this week. The official Saints Row 2 website has been launched and looks to compete for some attention this week, although it may be tough with GTA IV right around the corner. The game is also slated for an August 26th release date. Not the worst idea because it might give gamers a few months to bust through GTA IV. The date is also well before the DLC comes out.

Saints Row 2 Screenshots

Saints Row 2 Screen 1

What better to look at on Valentine’s Day than screens for a new game where you beat the piss out of people? Saints Row 2 from THQ looks be shaping up nicely. It’ll be out at some point this year for both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Will this be able to contend with the mighty Grand Theft Auto IV this year? Personally, I think it can. As long as they build well upon the solid foundation from the first Saints Row.
