Rumor: Microsoft Thinking About Non-Gaming Achievements?

Xbox 360 Achievement Survey

Microsoft recently sent out a survey asking gamers how they feel about Achievements. Towards the end, one of the questions asked how you would feel about certain Achievement types. One of the options is fairly interesting.

Providing Achievements for non-gaming uses of your Xbox 360 (e.g., “The Film Buff: You’ve watched 50 DVD’s”)

It looks like Microsoft may be gauging interest to see if people would like Achievements to spread into other areas of their digital life. I’m not that big into Achievements or Trophies anyway, so I could care less. If they do implement something like this, though, there should definitely be something for having gone through 10 RRoD’s like I have. How about 20k Gamerscore points for that one?

Rumor: Epic Already Hard at Work on Gears 3

The latest edition of EGM reports that Epic and Cliffy B are already working on Gears of War 3, slated to come out in fall of 2010. No one is surprised here and we all hoped it would be official as soon as possible. One major rumor is that it will have a 5 player co-op for the campaign, which was a huge omission from Gears 2, especially when there is often at least 4 COGs on screen at any given time. They also promise an updated Unreal engine. So sit back, relax, and we will have to wait for the conclusion of the Gears saga until at least 2010.

E3 Possibly Getting Revamped… or Not

Rumors are swirling around about what the state of E3 will be in 2009. G4TV reported that the show will remain private, but the strict vetting process for journalists will be loosened. This will allow the show to get back to its larger roots. The show is set to take place on June 2nd through the 4th at the LA Convention Center.

In a slightly different direction, N’Gai Croal is reporting that show will take a more TGS-like feel, with the first couple days for press only and remaining days being open to the public.

The ESA is keeping a tight lid on the actual breakdown of the event. Either way, it looks like E3 is going to try to get back, at least in some part, to its root of being THE gaming event of the year. I honestly hope that happens, but I do have my doubts.

MGS4 to Xbox 360?

I was very vocal in dismissing that this could ever happen. So much, that I wrote a well received editorial stating the impossibilty of such actions. As it may turn out, the impossible has been upgraded to possible. Coming from the TGS08, a source inside Kojima’s studio is saying they are actively pursuing a Xbox 360 launch date. This could be bullshit, but many trusted sites are all confirming the same thing. This would be a huge blow to the PS3. It is the superior machine but when its flagship title will go cross platform, well, whats the point of buying it outside of the Bluray drive? FFXIII made the leap so MGS4 going to MS is not as unlikely as previously assumed.

Rumor Mill: Xbox 360 to be Forward Compatible?

That is not a typo. The recent grumblings state that the next version of the Xbox, call it the 720, will have compatibilty with the 360, but this will also work the other way. An example is playing a 720 game on the 360, which looks good and plays great, but you will be able to play it on the 720 when you can afford it and the game will look that much better. Here are the guys who broke this and they seem to have it all figured out pretty well. Shenanigans anyone?

Spore Expansion Coming Soon?

GameStop and Amazon both briefly listed an expansion pack for Spore on their systems, before removing them from the online stores. Supposedly shipping November 18th, the Spore Cute & Creepy Parts Pack looks to retail for $19.99.

No word on exactly what cool parts will be available and requests to EA were not returned by press time. You can check out Google Cache of GameStop and Amazon to see what they showed before things got taken down.

Being this close to the game’s release, are you prepared to pay another $20 for Spore content? I’m not.

Rumor Mill: GTA IV Getting PS3 Trophies

According to a forum post, the Trophy list for the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV has been leaked. The Trophies match the Xbox 360 Achievements, so this isn’t very far fetched.

Are Trophies important to you? Will this bring you back to GTA4? I’ve moved on and doubt this will give me any reason to come back. It is nice to see developers adding Trophy support to older, popular games, though.

A New Wii in 2011?

According to some insider tips, Nintendo is prepping their successor to the Wii for a release in 2011. According to What They Play, Nintendo is showing select developers “early presentations of its next home console hardware”.

Supposedly, this is the true next-generation console Nintendo platform, being dubbed “Wii HD”. John Davison, formerly of 1up, broke the story and backs up the insider tips with news that Nintendo’s R&D budget has immensely increased over the past few months, indicating new hardware is in development.

Pretty much every tip we’ve received and everyone we’ve spoken with are pointing towards 2011/2012 for the release of the next generation of home consoles, giving the Xbox 360 a 6-7 year product cycle and the Wii and PS3 a 5-6 year life span. I won’t mind spending more money on consoles with that amount of time between products. What about you?

G4 Will NOT be Showing Rumored Xbox 360 Relaunch

In case you missed it, scroll down please, Xbox 360 is rumored to have a massivr relaunch of the console. Again, all the details are at the post below. G4, the supposed ESPN of gaming, was rumored to be showing live footage of the relaunch. They have recently said they have no word or plan to show anything in that timeslot. They also claim to know nothing about it but will show live TV and internet coverage if something does occur. Thanks for the cop out. Like NBC expected to show OJ driving down the freeway.

Rumor: Microsoft Relaunching Xbox 360 on Sept 25

It’s going to take me a minute to explain here. Word on the street is that MS is going to relaunch Xbox 360 at 7Pm EST on Sept 25. A countdown will ensue until Midnight when an update will be made available at midnight. Supposedly, there will be pages added to the dashboard as well as other crazy shit.

  • A new page that allows streaming of Sirius radio for a modest fee
  • A new downloadble music store
  • A page called Mad Lib, no one knows wtf this is
  • 12 new demos to be released for games that no one has seen yet, 2 of which are Halo titles
  • free Halo 3 map pack
  • DLC for Mass Effect and Portal
  • Preview of GTA IV DLC
  • 6 Free Xbox Original games for DL, one being Halo 1

Call all of this bullshit I and I will believe you. But, if half of this is true, it could make a pretty sweet night.
