TGS07: DualShock 3 Officially Confirmed

SIXAXIS Image

Kaz Hirai, master of the PlayStation World, let the cat out of the bag (finally). The rumble-enabled version of the SIXAXIS, now called the DualShock 3, will be making it’s way to a PS3 near you.

No pricing has been set as of yet, but expect the new controller to drop in Japan in November and hit the US and Europe in Spring 2008. Why the huge delay? Anyway, the controller is said to be slightly heavier, with no outward appearance changes other than the addition of the DualShock 3 logo on the controller.

I’m quite excited about this one. Going to have to replace my current SIXAXIS with a DualShock 3 to get my rumble back for PS3 games.

TGS07: Rumbling SIXAXIS Confirmed by EA

Ruh Roh Raggy. I don’t think Sony is going to be happy by this one. EA accidentally spilled the beans on a rumbling SIXAXIS for the PS3. Not being talking about it, but by allowing people to play Burnout Paradise with the new controller.

According to IGN, the new controller is heavier with a sticker on the bottom which says “RUMBLE”. No word on this being the final design.

Expect an official announcement from Sony tomorrow at their press event.

Rumor Mill: DualShock 3 Announcement at Tokyo Game Show

The wheels of vibration are again turning, which rumors resurfacing of a rumble-enabled PS3 controller being announced at the Tokyo Game Show.

According to the latest 1Up Yours podcast, Shane states that the DualShock 3 is “confirmed” for TGS, along with the release of firmware v2.0 which brings in-game XMB access.

While this rumor has been going on for a while, it does seem logical to release this new controller before the Holiday season and before Home is released to the public. I can only hope some of the recent and upcoming huge titles will support rumble if it is ultimately announced later this week.

SIXAXIS to Receive Multiple New Features?

SIXAXIS Image

With all of the confirmations of the PS3 controller getting back its rumble feature it got me thinking of a few things. Since Sony will be in the midst of a redesign for the controller, why stop at just adding in rumble?

In an interview with Kikizo at E3, Kaz Hirai hinted at more new features for the SIXAXIS:

We’re also looking at a variety of other things that we can incorporate with the controller, and we’ll come out with announcements when we think we have the right mix of features for the PS3 controller.

With the introduction of the rumble technology back in to the SIXAXIS controller, Sony can really think outside the box and instead of just pawning off a half assed “new” controller, that many feel we should have gotten already at launch, really go nuts and add in something that will make gamers run out and buy this thing.

Some things I was thinking about was a possible introduction of a new charging system, make this puppy chargeable on a stand or add in a microphone for chatting. Or maybe they could swap the left analog stick with the d-pad and revamp the triggers that many gamers have complained about. One rumor floating around is the new revision of the SIXAXIS will have multiple zone rumble support (instead of the left and right we’ve seen in the past) to give even better feedback.

What would you like to see in a new version of the SIXAXIS? Let us know in the comments.

E307: PS3 SIXAXIS With Rumble Confirmed

SIXAXIS Controller Image

Well, I’d say semi-confirmed. We all know it’s coming anyway.

An SCEA employee confirmed to Brian Ashcraft of Kotaku that, indeed, a version of the SIXAXIS with rumble will be coming this year. When? We’re hearing September. That means the new 80GB PS3 will NOT have the rumble controller bundled in.

I will definitely be grabbing a couple of these come September.

Rumor Mill: 80GB PS3 Comes with Rumble-Enabled SIXAXIS

SIXAXIS Red Light

You see that image right there? That’s a zoomed-in version of the official 80GB PS3 pack-shot. Anything seem funny to you? Well, it does to us. That little red light on the PlayStation button of the SIXAXIS… it doesn’t exist on the current controllers.

We’ve seen some third party shots before with a red light there, and just chalked it up to stupidity. But having this on your official box for the new 80GB model? Does this mean we’re going to see a new iteration of the SIXAXIS this August with rumble support? It seems highly plausible and most likely will happen.

Stay tuned for Sony’s E3 press event Wednesday night for more details, but I’d imagine this will be one of their announcements.

PS3 Price Drop Rumors Running Rampant

PS3 Price Cut Image

Yes, this post is sponsored by the letter R. Way too many R words in the title.

Anyway, rumors are spewing across the intarwebs about a PS3 price cut. We here at Loot Ninja are inclined to believe them, especially with reports of users buying PS3’s already at Target for $499.

I guess we’ll find out this week, but I’d say the odds are VERY good of Sony announcing a price drop at E3. Probably the SIXAXIS with rumble too.

Microsoft Sues Immersion

Immersion LogoThis one just makes you same hmmm. Microsoft is suing Immersion over their settlement with Sony.

Apparently, when Microsoft settled with Immersion back in the day, they put a clause in the contract saying Immersion would have to pay them should they settle with Sony. Oh yeah, and Microsoft decided to buy part of Immersion. Yes, it’s a dick move.

Well, Immersion and Sony never used the word “settlement”. They “concluded litigations” and “entering into a new business agreement”. Smart move, but Microsoft’s not buying it. The big Redmond giant has screwed over countless companies is similar ways, but now they’re crying foul when someone else is turning the tables on them.

If you look into it, Microsoft paid $26 million to settle their suit in 2002. Now, they’re asking for $27.5 million in royalties for Immersion settling with Sony. Now let me get this straight, Microsoft… you want Immersion to pay you $1.5 million for using their rumble technology? Yeah, that sounds about right.

PS3 Rumble Controller in Development

SIXAXIS Controller Image

We all knew it was coming. After Sony settled their dispute with Immersion, it’s just been a matter of time for a SIXAXIS with rumble to come out for the PS3. Every PlayStation gamer is axiously awaiting it’s arrival.

It turns out it won’t be too much longer, according to a report from Inner Bits:

We can now confirm that this is the case. We’ve heard from two independent sources at Sony that they have been working on prototypes for several months. Officially, the corporate line is still “no comment”. Unofficially, Sony is facing some difficulties with battery life; i.e. Between the rumble and the wireless support, the batteries are draining too fast to be acceptable for consumers.

Let’s hope Sony puts their best people on the case here to solve the battery issues. We want rumble in the PS-Triple!
