How many of these retros are there going to be? No complaints here because they are very well done but everytime I think its over they drop a new one on us. This installment tells us about the MMORPG of the Star Wars Universe. Grab your bowcaster and put on your Wookie pants, you have a Kessel run to make, in less than 12 parsecs no less. If you got this reference, you’re as big a nerd as we are.
I thought they were done with these. Apparently, they have much more. Part VII incorporates how LucasArts is expanding the Star Wars universe, namely by KOTOR 1 and 2, arguably 2 of the best RPGs of last gen. Check it out. Bonus points if you know who Darth Nihilus is.
With the word of Diablo III in the wind, I also began to reminisce about the days of the original Diablo back in 1997 and it goes a little something like this…
Diablo was set in the kingdom of Khanduras where the player took control of a male or female character in an ultimate battle with Diablo himself. It was the classic dungeon crawler with a top down view that allowed you to run around different randomly spawning dungeons with randomly spawning loot. Diablo was a mature game with plenty of gore and a very dark plot and feel that revolved around pure evil. You were an inhabitant of the town of Tristram and you were trying to save it from the Dark Lord by delving into its deepest and darkest dungeons to rid it of all the evils that dwelled there.
Diablo was one of the first games to bring action into an RPG game, where you clicked on mobs to actually fight with them in a real time scenario. The commands in Diablo were pretty basic and clicking on a mob meant you were going to attack them. Loot would drop from enemies that you could visibly see and pick up, with harder enemies giving rarer loot. Diablo introduced the basic premise of different text colors for items: white was a basic item, blue was a magical item and gold was a unique item. The different color schemes for items has spilled over into almost all of Blizzards other titles and is a very easy way to recognize rare items from common ones.
With the announcements of StarCraft 2, it got me reminiscing of the good old days of the original StarCraft. The game was developed by our good friends over at Blizzard and is perhaps one of the best real time strategy games ever made and definitely paved the way for many more strategy games like it. StarCraft first came onto the video game scene in March of 1998 for Windows and then a year later for Mac (back then Mac got no love). The story of StarCraft revolves around three main races: the Protoss, the Zerg and the Terrans. Each of the three races was fighting for dominance of the universe and would stop at nothing to achieve this.
The events of StarCraft unfold in the 25th century where certain humans have been exiled, because of overpopulation during the 21st century, into space and encounter the Zerg and the Protoss. The Terrans were the exiled humans with their Earth technology to aid them in battle, such as tanks, jets, floating buildings and the ever popular marines. The Zerg were an alien race that was part insect and part bad ass. They would spawn their armies from cocoons and could even infect the other races to use them against themselves. The Protoss were the alien race with superior intellect that was a cross between the noble samurai and the cut throat ninja, using their psychic powers to destroy their enemies.
Looks like we have gotten some answers to our question if the trophies in the new firmware 2.40 would go through old save files and award achievements for previous titles, the answer is no. The system will not scan old save files and award trophies because people are a bunch of cheaters.
The decision to not award Trophies in this way is due to the relative ease of save game sharing on PlayStation 3…
Had Trophies been retrospective, save game files with everything unlocked could have been easily traded, making it easy for people to cheat the system.
So what does this mean for all of us, it means we need to break out games again and beat them in order to get trophies for Warhawk, Uncharted, GTA, etc.
This does put a dent in the armor of the new firmware and may hinder it’s success as I doubt many gamers will take out all of their old games and play through them again just for trophies. Would you? Happy gaming.
It’s been a long time since GameTrailers released Part IV of their Star Wars Retrospective. Sure, it was a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, but damn. Anyway, check out some more of classic Star Wars gaming, both good and bad. It’ll get you hyped up for the upcoming titles.
Today is the day. Finally. MGS4 is ours. Gametrailers has provided an awesome retrospective of all things Metal Gear. Here is the thrilling conclusion to the saga. They go back and provide all the canon that make up an entwining story and of the best in gaming history.
Just when I thought they were done, they pulled me back in. After thinking this was only a 3 part series, I just learned that I am jackass and there are more. Here is the 4th installment on a look back at all things Star Wars video games. Will there be a part 5? I don’t want to embarass myself.
Here is the next and maybe final chapter in the thorough retrospective about all the games that make up the Star Wars universe. Albeit, some are good and some terrible, but you know that somewhere right now, someone is playing a Star Wars game. And touching themselves to Princess Leia in her slave girl metal bikini. Shame on you.
Here is the continuation in the very detailed series which tells of the history of Star Wars in gaming. Even a casual fan of the series should watch this. Check it out.
