I remember when I first purchased my PS3. The reason? Resistance: Fall of Man was out and it was considered one of the best games of Fall 2006. There was absolutely no way that I was going to pass on it ($600 price-tag and all). The single player campaign had a solid story, the presentation was executed very well, and the visuals were next-gen-y. Of course, the one thing getting the most attention at the time was its massive multiplayer feature of up to forty players online. Once you were done with the single player campaign, you would indulge yourself in a killing frenzy online. Fortunate for us, this time around, the next installment of Resistance will be a tad broader.
Insomniac, the geniuses behind the Ratchet & Clank series and the Resistance franchise, is claiming that you’ll need to put around 420 hours into Resistance 2 in order to unlock everything. That’s seventeen and a half days of obliterating the Chimera. If you’re one to choose gaming over work, then you should have no problem quitting your job to sluggishly progress in your game to assure you obtain every single trophy. Then there’s that sixty-player online mumbo-jumbo everyone is raving about and an eight-nine-hour campaign. Rack up on HotPockets and coffee, ladies and gentlemen. Resistance 2 is going to give you a bang for you buck.
Here is a classic look at what video game commercials looked like back in the days of the Atari, I can remember playing this on my Apple II C in green mono-color graphics. Watching this commercial really makes you appreciate the Halo, Resistance and Gears spots that push the forefront of ads today. The sad part is that this commercial is still better than the Super Mario Brothers inspired movie that hit theaters and is it me or does Luigi look a bit heavier than normal.
This one isn’t a total surprise, but Sony has officially announced PSP Plus, a software package built into Resistance: Retribution that will allow you to use your DualShock 3 controller (that means dual analog sticks and rumble) with the upcoming PSP shooter.
There is a catch, people. There’s always a catch. To enable this feature, you have to connect your PSP to your PS3 while running Resistance 2 to enable the feature. From R2, there’s a menu option to enable PSP Plus! for your handheld version. If you’re a Resistance fan, I’d imagine you’re picking up both anyway. You’ll also be able to use the video out features of the PSP Slim or PSP Bright to watch on your big screen.
The PSP Plus! mode turns off aim assist, adds vibrate, gives you dual analog controls, and increases the challenge level of the game. You know, make it harder since you have real controls.
I’m personally very much looking forward to this. Not sure how happy I’ll be going from home to mobile gaming switching between the PSP controls and the DS3, but we’ll see how it plays out. Hopefully more games start to incorporate this functionality.
You can pretty much say that Resistance is one of the flagship titles for the Sony brand right now. With the success of the original PS3 launch title and the much hyped sequel coming this fall, Sony decided it would be fitting to bring the series to the PSP with Resistance: Retribution.
Here’s the first trailer from the game, which looks stunning on the PSP. It’s a third person shooter and you aren’t Nathan Hale. Get ready for some Chimera killing action in Spring 2009.
Nathan Hale is back and he has 19 hours left to live, welcome back Resistance 2! Many are hailing this as the killer app for the PS3 this year and even though this is just a teaser it looks great and makes gamers yearn for more. Curious hour the time scheme will work into the gameplay, will it be like 24 the television show where everything is in real-time?
Sony is bringing their pimp hand strong with the Home spaces for some of their first party titles, most notably Uncharted, Resistance, and Warhawk.
With Resistance, you’ll be able to walk around unseen parts of the game, presumably with your Home avatar. Not sure if you’ll be able to brings friends with you or not at this point. Another cool feature in the Resistance space is the ability to listen “intercepted” radio communications between European and U.S. forces that are designed to give you a better idea of what’s going on in the Resistance story.
In the Uncharted space, you’ll be able to explore virtually all of the Uncharted levels with your Home avatar with no enemies. Again, no confirmation of being able to do this with friends. Uncharted’s space also brings a 2D side-scrolling shooter with Nathan Drake that’s being described as a cross between Contra and Out of This World. Sign me up!
Finally, and what I think is the absolute coolest, is the Warhawk space. The space will serve as a virtual war room for up to 8 players to strategize before entering the game. Yeah, discussing battle plans. Big deal, you say. Well get this… you’ll be using a virtual “sand table” of the level to plan our your attacks and defenses. Sony’s going as far as to let you place army men avatars on the sand table to better visualize your plan of attack. Holy dookers people.
This takes my hopes for Home and raises them way up. Sony is said to be pitching this to third party developers as a way to extend the life of their games and bolster community around them. I’m pretty sure it’ll work. Can’t wait for this to launch and most games to take advantage of this technology.
That is right boys and girls Resistance 2 is offical now, slated for Fall of 2008. It will be a PS3 exclusive again so go out and by one now or start saving becasue this game is boasting insane features!
-One campaign focusing on Nathan Hale across USA, 1 player
-One separate story based campaign supporting 2 players offline, 8 players Online
-Online Multiplayer (dedicated servers) supporting 60 people, lobbies for individual squads
-Classes for online, templates include Heavy, Special Ops, Medic
-New vehicles including Chameleon (Stalker with cloak)
-Partial randomized geometry in level spots
-Insane stat tracking coupled with MyResistance.net
Thats right 60 people online killing each other with different classes for your character, this may blow away COD4 and GRAW.
In case anyone is still playing Resistance: Fall of Man on the PS3, two new maps are coming soon. No pricing has been set, but here’s what you can expect from the new maps:
In the Bracknell map, the struggle against the Chimera comes to the cavernous spaces of an old railway system – now a Chimeran node. Expect intense close-quarters fighting as you explore three storeys of dimly lit spawning rooms and disused train carriages.
The Axbridge map, meanwhile, consists of two resistance bases spanning a valley strewn with rocks and Chimeran structures. Find yourself a secret perch among the cliffs on either side or brave the walled ‘theatre of combat’ on the valley floor, and prepare for battle: the enemy will show no mercy.
Both sound pretty cool. I would hope they’ll be released for free at this point, but I somehow doubt it.
I recently picked up a PS3 due to the price break, 5 free movies and wanting to see 300 on Blu Ray. I opted for the regular 60 gig version with no frills added and an HDMI cable (not included) over the new 80 gig bundle with Motorstorm for $599. After playing around with it and setting it up I have the following inital impressions:
- This thing is heavy!
- PS3 is whisper quiet, my 360 is ridiculously loud and even my Wii is louder
- The PS3 controller is feather light in comparison to other controllers due to the lack of batteries, this takes some getting used to
- PSN is pretty good and can match or even over take the other two consoles download netwokks, IMO
- HDMI was simple to hook up but expensive
- Downloading demos is awesome, it is interesting that you have to install them once you have downloaded them, which is different than the 360
- Six axis controller recognition works very well
- Resistance Fall of Man looks like a good shooter, very much a cross between COD and Halo
- Online play in Resistance with 32 players was lag free, this was very impressive
- Folding@Home looks interesting and confusing at the same time
- Looking forward to increasing my PS3 library with Stranglehold
The UK isn’t getting a price cut on the PS3 like we saw in the US. Instead, Sony is adding some value to the console and now calling it a Starter Pack.
For your £425, you’re now going to get the 60GB PS3, two SIXAXIS controllers, and copies of Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorostorm. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right?
Here’s where I see a problem with this bundle… no one in the UK under age 18 can buy this bundle. You might say people under 18 don’t have that much cash anyway, but that’s not the point. By including Motorstorm, and 18+ game in the UK, Sony is preventing the sale of the Starter Pack to minors. Seems like a poor choice in my eyes. What do you think?
We're like Spaceballs... we're making Loot Ninja everything. Coming soon we'll have hats, shirts, hoodies, possibly banana hammocks if one Editor has his way...
