Resistance: Retribution Infected Comparison Video

Scuba is at Loot Ninja HQ for the weekend. We’re insanely drunk. Here’s a video of Resistance: Retribution comparing the Infected and non-infected versions to tide you over. Rest assured that this post was written with no less than 10 drinks in my system after 2am on Sunday morning.

Preorder Resistance: Retribution, Get Demo Access

Just like with Killzone 2, Sony is offering up early demo access to Resistance: Retribution for the PSP if you preorder the game. Right now, you’ll have to shop at Amazon, GameStop, or GameCrazy, although Best Buy will have the offer soon.

The demo will feature a bit of the single player campaign and also give access to Resistance Connect with both the Infected mode and Resistance: Retribution Plus. That means you can use your DualShock 3 if you own Resistance 3 on the PS3.

Like I said before, I’m remaining skeptical about this one until I get some hands on time (which should be pretty soon). I’m worried about the controls on the PSP with only one analog stick/nub. Hopefully, it all works out, but I have my doubts.

Resistance: Retribution Gameplay Footage

Check out some off-camera gameplay footage of Resistance: Retribution for the PSP. I’ve been questionable about the title since its announcement and this footage doesn’t ease any of my concerns. I can’t say for sure if the person playing is utilizing the PS3 connection with the DualShock3, but I can’t imagine these controls will be easy or forgiving on the PSP. Using the analog nub and d-pad for movement and aiming is awkward at best, and this game looks to utilize too much of that control scheme. We’ll see how it goes with further builds as we get closer to launch, though.

All Kinds of Free Resistance Stuff Today

Who doesn’t like free shit? Put your hands down, people. Everyone does. Sony is giving away a virtual cornucopia of Resistance content later today on the PlayStation Store, so get ready.

A couple of Resistance 2 premium themes with multiple wallpapers each are making their way to a PS3 near you, all for free. Also, every map pack for the original Resistance: Fall of Man will be made available at no charge. If you still have the original and never picked them up, why not grab them and go back in time. Finally, a new trailer for the game is coming out. Bryan Intihar, Insomniac’s Community Manager, says it’s the best one and his favorite for the game. I’ll make my own decision once I see it in HD on my TV later today.

So, PS3 gamers out there, it looks like today will shape up to be a pretty decent update on the PlayStation Store. We’ll have the full details for you later. Stay tuned.

PSP Plus Gives DualShock 3 Support to Resitance: Retribution

This one isn’t a total surprise, but Sony has officially announced PSP Plus, a software package built into Resistance: Retribution that will allow you to use your DualShock 3 controller (that means dual analog sticks and rumble) with the upcoming PSP shooter.

There is a catch, people. There’s always a catch. To enable this feature, you have to connect your PSP to your PS3 while running Resistance 2 to enable the feature. From R2, there’s a menu option to enable PSP Plus! for your handheld version. If you’re a Resistance fan, I’d imagine you’re picking up both anyway. You’ll also be able to use the video out features of the PSP Slim or PSP Bright to watch on your big screen.

The PSP Plus! mode turns off aim assist, adds vibrate, gives you dual analog controls, and increases the challenge level of the game. You know, make it harder since you have real controls.

I’m personally very much looking forward to this. Not sure how happy I’ll be going from home to mobile gaming switching between the PSP controls and the DS3, but we’ll see how it plays out. Hopefully more games start to incorporate this functionality.

Resistance: Retribution Debut Trailer

You can pretty much say that Resistance is one of the flagship titles for the Sony brand right now. With the success of the original PS3 launch title and the much hyped sequel coming this fall, Sony decided it would be fitting to bring the series to the PSP with Resistance: Retribution.

Here’s the first trailer from the game, which looks stunning on the PSP. It’s a third person shooter and you aren’t Nathan Hale. Get ready for some Chimera killing action in Spring 2009.

Sony Games Pimp Out Home

PlayStation Home Screen

Sony is bringing their pimp hand strong with the Home spaces for some of their first party titles, most notably Uncharted, Resistance, and Warhawk.

With Resistance, you’ll be able to walk around unseen parts of the game, presumably with your Home avatar. Not sure if you’ll be able to brings friends with you or not at this point. Another cool feature in the Resistance space is the ability to listen “intercepted” radio communications between European and U.S. forces that are designed to give you a better idea of what’s going on in the Resistance story.

In the Uncharted space, you’ll be able to explore virtually all of the Uncharted levels with your Home avatar with no enemies. Again, no confirmation of being able to do this with friends. Uncharted’s space also brings a 2D side-scrolling shooter with Nathan Drake that’s being described as a cross between Contra and Out of This World. Sign me up!

Finally, and what I think is the absolute coolest, is the Warhawk space. The space will serve as a virtual war room for up to 8 players to strategize before entering the game. Yeah, discussing battle plans. Big deal, you say. Well get this… you’ll be using a virtual “sand table” of the level to plan our your attacks and defenses. Sony’s going as far as to let you place army men avatars on the sand table to better visualize your plan of attack. Holy dookers people.

This takes my hopes for Home and raises them way up. Sony is said to be pitching this to third party developers as a way to extend the life of their games and bolster community around them. I’m pretty sure it’ll work. Can’t wait for this to launch and most games to take advantage of this technology.

Resistance Getting New Maps

Resistance Screen

In case anyone is still playing Resistance: Fall of Man on the PS3, two new maps are coming soon. No pricing has been set, but here’s what you can expect from the new maps:

In the Bracknell map, the struggle against the Chimera comes to the cavernous spaces of an old railway system – now a Chimeran node. Expect intense close-quarters fighting as you explore three storeys of dimly lit spawning rooms and disused train carriages.

The Axbridge map, meanwhile, consists of two resistance bases spanning a valley strewn with rocks and Chimeran structures. Find yourself a secret perch among the cliffs on either side or brave the walled ‘theatre of combat’ on the valley floor, and prepare for battle: the enemy will show no mercy.

Both sound pretty cool. I would hope they’ll be released for free at this point, but I somehow doubt it.

UK Gets No PS3 Price Cut, Sees Value Added With Starter Pack

PS3 Starter Pack

The UK isn’t getting a price cut on the PS3 like we saw in the US. Instead, Sony is adding some value to the console and now calling it a Starter Pack.

For your £425, you’re now going to get the 60GB PS3, two SIXAXIS controllers, and copies of Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorostorm. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right?

Here’s where I see a problem with this bundle… no one in the UK under age 18 can buy this bundle. You might say people under 18 don’t have that much cash anyway, but that’s not the point. By including Motorstorm, and 18+ game in the UK, Sony is preventing the sale of the Starter Pack to minors. Seems like a poor choice in my eyes. What do you think?

Sony Apologizes to Church of England for Likeness Used in Resistance: FOM

resistance-fom.jpgSeems like the M.O. (modus operandi) for Sony this year is to do something kind of asinine, then issue a half-assed apology for it.  For those of you who have played Resistance, there is an almost identical replica of the Church of England, in this case an Anglican Cathedral.  The Church wanted its likeness taken out of the game, which obviously did not happen.  Here is a statement from Sony, courtesy of Canada.com

“It was not our intention to cause offense by using a representation of Manchester Cathedral in chapter eight of the work,” the letter said. “If we have done so, we sincerely apologize.”

Wow.  I guess we can all go out for bangers and mash now.
