And Now for Something Completely Different

Loot Ninja

Hi, my name is Jonathan, and I’m a gamer.  Maybe I’m not the biggest gamer you’ll come across, but I like to think of video games as the Choose Your Own Adventure of an increasingly tech-savvy generation that’s watched flicks like Hackers and The Matrix way too many times (at least I probably have).  I’m actually a filmmaker myself.  I make horror movies.  That means, despite an overwhelmingly disappointed consensus, I’m still playing the hell out of Resident Evil 5.  It’s the co-op mode, man!  Currently, my console of choice is the PS3.  I’m big into Blu-ray, despite having declared it dead a year ago.  Having said that, I will defend to the death my opinion that the N64 was the greatest console ever to grace the world of gaming.  Hell, I still play with a Dreamcast, so what do I know?  Anyway, you’re going to see me contributing ’round these parts.  My PS3 ID is PumpkinHeadRex.  Hit me up sometime.

Review: Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360, PS3)

Resident Evil 5 Screen 10

Resident Evil has been a staple in the horror franchise and holds the title as the measuring stick for making you fudge your skivvies at a moment’s notice. I will never forget when I was playing the original RE on PS1 and my friend started crying and made us turn the lights on when the dogs jumped through the wall. Needless to say, that was the last time that pussy ever got invited to a sleepover. RE5 makes the foray into next gen. It looks like we all thought it would, but at the same time, it does not feel and play like we all thought it would. The game is still great, just not the killer app I was expecting.

Capcom Under Fire for Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode

Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode Screen

Capcom is getting a bit of flack from both gamers and press for the upcoming Versus Mode addition to Resident Evil 5. For $4.99 (400 MS Points), you’ll be able to play competitively online in 2v2 matches. Many people are arguing that this content should have been included with the game. Speaking to CVG, Capcom had this to say about the issue:

Although Versus mode makes use of the assets that exist in the game, the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5. [...] We have never included a Versus mode in Resident Evil before, and as well as the costs of development of the feature, there’s also additional bandwidth costs associated with it.

Whether they’ve ever included it or not, talking about paid multiplayer on the day of release is a bit shady. And with all the people, myself included, who really hate the controls, I can’t see paying $5 to play against other people online.

Microsoft Announces Red Limited Edition Xbox 360

Red Limited Edition Xbox 360 Resident Evil 5

Microsoft is dropping a new Xbox 360 Elite bundle along with the release of Resident Evil 5 on Friday, March 13th. Spooky.

The bundle will go for $399 and include a red Xbox 360 elite, a matching red controller, 120gb hard drive, black headset, a copy of Resident Evil 5, and a download token for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Not too bad to include the two games at the regular price.

I’m sure these are going to be hard to get, so pre-order if you really want one. My 10th 360 is still going strong (knock on wood), so I’m good to go with this one for a while.

Resident Evil 5 Tops 1.8 Million Downloads

Resident Evil 5 Screen 10

On January 26th, the one week Xbox 360 exclusive Resident Evil 5 demo was released to fans in the U.S.  In just three days the demo was downloaded by more than 1.3 million gamers according to a press release issued by Microsoft.

The Resident Evil 5 exclusive demo period has officially ended for the Xbox 360 and it is now also available for the PS3 as well.  During its exclusive time on the Xbox 360 the Resident Evil 5 demo was downloaded by more than 1.8 million gamers.  The demo has also been available in Japan under the title Biohazard 5 and that version has been downloaded by over 53 percent of Xbox Live Gold members in Japan.  Uh, so how many is that again?

Resident Evil 5, the retail version, will be available for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 13th.

Resident Evil: 5 Demo Impressions

When I hear or read the words “Resident Evil”, I immediately think something is going to try to scare the shit out of me and try to rip my head off.  Widely considered the greatest horror franchise of all time, RE:5 is promising to do to us just that but in its first true next gen form. I went into this demo expecting the second coming of Christ. I left a little disappointed and bummed out.

The most obvious criticism I have at this moment is the movement of the players. They move like tanks. Imagine trying to parallel park a school bus, that is what it feels like. To say that they turn slow is an understatement. Especially when you are surrounded by zombies with machetes, wrenches, and God knows what else. The aiming is also a bit off. The weapons so far are laser guided but the controls feel very stiff.

Resident Evil 5 Demo Now Available on Xbox 360

If you’re an Xbox Live Gold member, you can fire up your 360 and get the Resident Evil 5 demo. It shouldn’t take you too long to download at 473mb.

You’ll get to go through two early levels of the game, Assembly Place and Shanty Town, in both single player and online co-op. Grab a buddy and rock this one out.

PS3 owners will get to play the demo next Thursday, so be patient and don’t start a fanboy flame fest. We’ll be playing the demo later today and will have impressions for you tomorrow.

Resident Evil 5 Collector’s Edition is Pretty

Capcom sent over word today with the contents of the upcoming Resident Evil 5 Collector’s Edition. For $90, you get some pretty cool stuff. You get a Kijuju steel game case, a Tricell bag, a Chris figure, a Kijuju pendant, and BSAA patch. Not too shabby. The 2nd disc of the CE has a bunch of cool features.

Inside the steel case is where the real action lies, with a two disc set including the game and bonus disc with additional special features.  The Making of Resident Evil 5 feature, first shown at the Tokyo Game Show, will be released on the bonus disc for the first time.  A digital art gallery showcasing the game’s incredible HD graphics and impressive art style and a Resident Evil Degeneration Trailer will top off the special features making a bonus disc that is a must-have for all Resident Evil devotees.

While I’m not a huge Resident Evil fan, mainly because I’m a sissy with scary games, even I have to admit this is a sweet Collector’s Edition. It’s a bit pricey though, so I have a feeling most people will pass and stick with the regular $60 game.

Resident Evil 5 Demo Coming to the U.S. for PS3 and Xbox 360

The same Resident Evil 5 demo that was released in Japan over a month ago is now finally being released in the U.S.  The demo will feature two levels that can be played solo or with a special someone via split-screen or online.

The kicker is that the Xbox 360 will be given a one week exclusive head start.  The demo is set to release on Xbox Live on January 26th to all gold subscribers.  The PS3 version will be available the week of February 5th via the Playstation Network.  Since there isn’t a specific date set for the PS3 release of the demo, it could mean that Xbox 360 fanboys could get more than seven full days of name calling in before PS3 fanboys have anything to say about it.  The Resident Evil 5 TGS trailer will also be available for download on Xbox Live beginning January 16th.

You may now commence the war of words.

Resident Evil 5 Available in Japan Only… But…

Some savvy gamers have found a way to play the Japan only Resident Evil 5 demo. You need to click here, follow the instructions. It is pretty easy. You are making a boot CD of the demo that tells the Xbox 360 it is in Japan. This may or may not violate TOS. So, maybe unplug your adapter just in case to avoid the banhammer.
