In case you didn’t know, the world is in the economic equivalent of a monkey shit fight in a sewer after Steve takes a dump. That’s not a good position to be in, trust me on that. In my humble opinion, this is exactly where Sony is residing, in that sewer. I know this is a bold, dangerous statement that will bring the fanboys and hate out of the woodwork and all over Loot-Ninja. I simply ask you bear with me on this and read on before all sorts of crap starts flying.
Lets start off by cutting Sony’s big pitch competitive edge down to size with a bit of reality. Blu-ray is not a massive selling point for every PS3 owner. Yes, it is helpful to close the sale in some cases but let’s be honest, most tech-savvy consumers are not 100% honest, they will download what they want to watch. It’s out there, on the internets, and it’s free. Why buy Blu-ray when you get the HD sex for free. I am a cynic if I say no one will pay, so I point to the services like Sky and Netflix which stream HD quality over the ever growing broadband connection base. Almost 60% of households have broadband in the UK and distribution electronically is a bit cheaper than shipping thousands of units all over the world. It is the way forward, not cheap plastic disks.

Everyone is feeling the hurt with the global economy in a huge downturn. The US is officially in a recession (as if we didn’t know that already) and looking to head towards the first depression in a very very long time. Overseas, things aren’t fairing much better. Sony announced today that the company will be cutting 8000 jobs from the electronics division in an effort to cut costs by $1.1 billion next year. The job cuts are expected to be completed by March 2010.
Kazuharu Miura, an expert electronics analyst in Tokyo, doesn’t think this will be enough, however. “The entire high-tech market is being seriously hurt,” Miura said. “Japanese companies are all in trouble because of this unexpected worldwide slowdown.”
On the gaming side of things, this current round of job cuts does not affect the PlayStation division. I repeat, Sony is not cutting jobs on the PlayStation side of the business. Will they in the future? Who knows. Either way, the economy is in piss-poor shape and a rebound is nowhere in sight.

Banks are failing. Homes are being repossessed. Prices are rising, inflation is growing, the economy is shrinking and the end result is a lot of people are losing their jobs and lifestyles. Life is miserable… but not when I’m in good old Liberty City… well it’s not miserable for me, but it is miserable for the citizens of Liberty City as I breathe a fiery napalm death upon them.
Video games are an escape from reality for some; but why you ask? I’ll tell you why, it’s because reality blows. Read that first line again, same as the headlines on Google News.
