Sony today confirmed what we already knew: a 250GB PS3 will be coming to North America. What we didn’t know was the ship date and price, which are November 3rd and $349.99, respectively.
The new system will be exactly the same as the current PS3 Slim but with a bigger hard drive. If you’re a big fan of downloading all kinds of stuff, go for it. It’s well worth the extra $50 to get more than double the storage space. It’ll cost you more to buy a bigger hard drive and install it yourself.
We’ll see how Sony fares this Holiday season with, yet again, the highest priced console on the market.
Damn, Sony’s been busy this month, haven’t they? I’ve been toying with the idea of trading in my PS3 with an added 120G Hard Drive for the new PS3 Slim. I was also thinking about trading in my PSP Slim for the Go! Then I noticed something that had escaped me previously – the very small $50 or so price difference is disproportionate to the massive performance difference. Then that had me thinking “what the hell is Sony thinking?!”
Sony is on a tear here lately and just can’t leave things well enough alone! It gets me so mad sometimes! I’m talking to you Sony! Anyway, here recently, Sony has changed the PS3 logo, they’ve changed the look of the console with the new PS3 Slim, they just released a new firmware update, and now Sony is changing box art designs. The first game up on the chopping block is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, one all PS3 owners should buy. I guess this is Sony’s way of making everyone get used to the new design.
I don’t know about you Loot Ninja gamers, but I like to have my video game collection in tip top shape. The game shelf (or gaming cabinet in my case) should be “shown off” when company comes over for dinner. It doesn’t matter who shows up, whether it be granny McGee or a 10 year old boy. Friends should be able to enjoy a nice 3 course meal and then bow down to your awe inspiring game collection. That’s just how your supposed to do it right?
This new box design doesn’t look half bad actually, it definitely cleans up the look of the front cover, and takes away the famous “Spiderman font” I have come to love, leaving more room for the box art. It doesn’t look as busy and cluttered as previous games, with Playstation Network logos, and spelled out “Only On Playstation” taking up massive amounts of box cover real estate. Look for this new design to hit store shelves when Uncharted 2 does, on October 13th.
Am I complaining about a minor design change? Does it really mean that much to you guys? All I am hoping is that the back spine looks the same as the rest of my PS3 game collection. Is that too much to ask for? How say you Loot Ninja? Let me know in the comments.
Yesterday I received my non-shiny new PS3 Slim and I promptly began the process of transferring all games, game saves, videos, music, pictures, and accounts from my launch 60GB console to the new super quiet version. I decided to upgrade due to the Blu-Ray drive making nasty grinding noises on my older PS3. With it being out of warranty and backwards compatibility not meaning all that much me, I made the jump. While most of the transfer went smooth, there were a few bumps in the road.
Some of you may remember my PS3 hard drive kicking the bucket. Thanks to some friends who work in data recovery, I was able to fully recover the data on the drive and get it back in my PS3. All my Game Saves were intact and nothing major was lost, so I was free and clear to backup my system.
My first step was running the built in Backup Utility on my launch PS3. This took about 2 hours as it backed up everything I had on the system (including four PS1 classics and 18 PSN Games). Once that was all finished up, I powered down the console, unpacked the new Slim and hooked it up. After connecting to my wireless network and updating the firmware to version 3.0, I plugged in my external hard drive to begin the transfer of data. I was immediately greeted with a message that said not all data could be transferred, which I expected. I knew most PSN Games would not transfer over and had already planned to re-download all of those. After a quick 2 minute restore, I was prompted to reboot the console and everything was there… or so I thought.
The PS3 is now under 300 bucks. Great. Was Sony planning on telling anybody? Sony has been getting flamed for their lack of ads for all their products and a new campaign has begun. Watch below and see if the PS3 can reign supreme.
Hello Loot Ninja! First off, since Matt just mentioned he is gone on vacation, the rest of the Loot Ninja writers will reign supreme! HA! I’ll be sure to go into the site and track all sorts of mud and good nasty things all over the floors. I just thought I would get that out of the way. We hope to keep you guys informed in all things going on this week with the master and commander being AWOL. Now onto the news!
GameStop online is showing the ad for the PS3 Slim. Nothing new really, it’s been up a little before the PS3 slim was announced. Seen it! But under closer inspection it seems that the new Sony console will be released BEFORE the September 1st street date? How much in fact? Almost a whole week. All of you out there prying and scratching to get your hands on the new console can possibly do that August 25th. It’s unconfirmed at the moment if you will be able to just walk in and buy a PS3 Slim on August 25th, but I’ll keep you all informed. Wait, when is August 25th? Oh yeah, that’s tomorrow!
With the recently announced PS3 price drop answering thousands of industry questions, some out there are reaching into their memory banks to ask the next best question on their mind, “Where is the PS3 backwards compatibility?” If you are one of the gamers out there that already have a PS3, let alone adopted the technology in the early days of the consoles lifecycle when it was $600 dollars, you just might have gotten your hands on a 20GB or 40GB backwards compatible PS3. These are extremely hard to find now days, and doing so will have you paying in upwards of $350 on Ebay.
Finally a PS3 price drop and a new SKU. Two long awaited occurance to occur simultaneously. We want to know how you guys feel about. Vote and let your voice be heard. Or read. I don’t know, just fucking vote.
Will the loss of dedicated servers for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 affect your purchase?
No way in heck. I wanted it for the multiplayer experience. (83%, 278 Votes)
I'm a little miffed, but still buying it. (13%, 44 Votes)
BAH, the multiplayer is full of aim-bots, and cheaters anyways. I'm buying it for the single player campaign. (4%, 13 Votes)
Sony has to be the absolute worst company in this industry at keeping secrets. The PS3 Slim has had spy shots for months and Sony has denied them at every turn. Today, they changed their tune and officially unveiled the PS3 Slim.
Coming the first week of September, the new version of the console is 33% smaller and 36% lighter while sporting a 120GB hard drive. All the same features you’ve come to expect in the PS3 will be there. It’ll be available for $299, the same price as the current 80GB SKU (which will be gone once stocks run dry).
I know I’ll be picking one of these up as my launch 60GB PS3 isn’t doing well with reading discs. I have a feeling it’s from moving it back and forth from my living room to my office so much. Maybe I’ll leave the old one in the living room as a dedicated Blu-Ray player.
I don’t want to hear any more excuses that the PS3 is too expensive. Effective today, the PS3 will see a price reduction to $299 for the 80GB SKU. Yep, it’s finally here. That’s for all regions, so gamers everywhere can get a PS3 for a lot cheaper.
Head on out to whatever retailer you like best and grab a PS3 if you’ve been waiting for this moment to arrive. It’s worth every penny of the $300 price tag.
