Sandbox games have become the next FPS. Everyone is trying to get a piece of this growing market. Let’s face it, gamers like to feel like a god and like to destroy everything in their path in the most violent way possible. Prototype lets you take the reins of a failed experiment gone terribly wrong. Alex Mercer was just an ordinary man with an ordinary life. Now he is the ultimate killing machine with no limits on what he can’t do. Sounds like the game we have all been waiting for, right?
Prototype = Crackdown + R Rated + The Flood. So far, this is what I know about Prototype: Someone made you into a monster. People are trying to kill you. You want to know who did this. You are going to be a monster, eat people, and solve a conspiracy. You have my attention. Prototype drops June 9th.
Prototype is shaping up to be a game that will turn a lot of heads just as it did at Comic Con and GDC. The story is confusing and takes some explanation. Lucky for us that the developers have pieced together a trailer that explains some of the details. Prototype is an R rated Crackdown. Open world, gory, and bad ass. Check it out.
Prototype wasn’t really high on my radar, but after playing it, I’m psyched. Make sure to check out the full preview and then watch this interview with Jono Lim, one of the developers.
One of the most enjoyable preview builds I got to play so far at Comic Con was Prototype at an Activision party on Thursday night. You take control of a character with special powers after New York City is infected and becomes quarantined. During the demo level I played, three of those powers were available: claws, hammer fists, and a sword-like arm. More will be playable in the full game, such as having your hands become whips. You’ll be able to switch powers on the fly through a radial selection menu.
Activision stated that they tried more-so to duplicate the density of New York City instead of going for photo-realism in the environment. They definitely succeeded in that respect. While running around, there were easily a hundred pedestrians, enemies, tanks, and helicopters on screen all either running for their lives or just plain trying to kill me. To have that much going on with the AI at any given time is impressive. What didn’t impress me, however, were many of the game’s textures. Cars looked boxy and almost last-gen and some of the buildings just didn’t look right.
I guess the question here is, Can a whol town disappear? If it could, I would not be upset to see Boston go. Maybe Detroit. Apparently, in Prototype, you may be laying waste to complete cities. Sucks to live there. Just as much as Boston sucks.
Prototype is supposed to be a life like version of Crackdown and more of a sandbox. We have seen some screens and this game looks like it could pwn. Here is a part 1 of a teaser trailer that, well, teases the shit out of you. Check it oooooooooout.
From the looks of it, this game seems to be somewhat like a Crackdown, but a lot more mature. There are limbs flying off and bodies falling from the sky. Apparently, you gain health and/or powers from the remains of falling enemies. You are some Military-esque experiment gone either horribly wrong or right and you basically destroy anything in your path. Its on both major consoles as well as the PC. Early reports call for a September 15th, 2008 release date. A demo in the not so distant future would be awesome.
