Just like with Peggle, I’ll be buying multiple copies of Plants vs. Zombies. I’ve played the game for countless hours on my Mac and now versions are being developed for the iPhone and Xbox Live Arcade. I can guarantee you I’ll be picking up both. The iPhone version should be hitting later this year while the XBLA edition does not yet have a release date.
I’ve always though the iPhone would be an ideal platform for Plants vs. Zombies. The touch controls should work perfectly for positioning your plants and seeds as well as picking up sun drops. I’m sure it’ll work out well with a controller on the Xbox, but just like Peggle before it, I think the iPhone version might be my favorite. We’ll have to wait and see until later this year.
If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon just yet and don’t want to pay to download a copy of the game on your PC or Mac, PopCap will have the game on retail shelves for $19.95. I highly suggest you get this game on some platform, because it could be a Game of the Year candidate.

PopCap knows how to make a solid game that I will buy on multiple platforms. It happened first with Peggle, and now Plants vs. Zombies is going to take the reigns. In an interview with Kombo, PopCap’s Garth Chouteau dropped this tidbit of information:
…Peggle for XBLA is a good example of a game that we took that was popular on the PC and we spent probably twice as long as anyone else would have figuring how to make that game really good for Xbox and Xbox Live Arcade, and I think you will see that with Plants Vs. Zombies–I don’t know the exact order in which that game will make its way onto other platforms, but it’s certainly been successful enough, quickly enough, that we’re looking at other platforms and deciding where we’ll take that game next…
…I don’t think you’ll see Plants vs. Zombies on a mobile phone. I think you may see it on the iPhone…some of our games, we would just say, ‘you know? We could probably sell a million of these, but people aren’t going to be happy with it…’”
If I could have given the game 6 Ninja Stars in my review, I would have. It’s that damn good. When this ships for XBLA, PSN, iPhone, DS, wherever, you can be sure I’ll be grabbing almost every version. You should too.

It takes a lot for a game to really steal my attention and makes hours disappear like they were minutes. Plants vs. Zombies easily fits into that category. Every time I sit down and say “I’ll play for a few minutes”, it turns into a few hours. The game takes the tower defense genre, flips it around a few times, adds a touch of humor, and makes you not want to walk away.

You’ve certainly heard about the Peggle $0.99 sale on the iPhone App Store by now. I found out the other day and was chatting about the game with Tyler (previously of Loot Ninja fame, now writing at AppAdvice). I already have Peggle on the PC, XBLA, and DS, but had avoided the iPhone version because I’d played the game already on 3 other platforms. The sale has changed that and I now own all four available versions.
After playing around with it on my iPhone, I can say that I really do like this version the best. Things feel the most precise to me with zooming and positions your shot. And having Peggle on the go wherever and whenever I choose is a great feeling.
I’m looking forward to going through unlocking all Peggle Masters again and getting immersed in the world of Peggle. You have to hand it to PopCap; I’ve never wanted to and actually purchased a game for so many platforms. If they start releasing Plants vs. Zombies for other platforms, I think this might happen again (review coming soon for that gem).

Peggle is one of those casual games that is alright to be loved by hardcore gamers, at least that’s what I tell myself. The game was originally released in early 2007 for the PC and was able to garner all sorts of rave reviews. The basic concept of the game is to shoot a ball from the top of the screen in hopes that it will ricochet off of as many pegs as possible on its way down to the bottom. Sounds simple enough, but there is so much more to it.

If you’ve gotten this far in life without ever touching a Bejeweled game, you should go hide in a cave somewhere. PopCap Games has had a lock on the casual market for years with this series, and Bejeweled 2 is just as fun as you’d expect.
Bejeweled 2 takes a simple matching game and makes it damn fun. To match any three like colored jewels, hold X on the jewel you want to move and use the d-pad to move it. You can only move one spot, so it has to be a match. Simple gameplay, but it works.

One of the biggest names in the casual gaming sector is PopCap games. They’re behind the massive hits Bejeweled, Peggle, etc. Starting today, their games are coming to the PSN.
Previously, PopCap only distributed their games on the PC and Xbox 360. Today, Bejeweled 2 will be the first tilte from their Library to be available on the PS3 for $9.99. Coming soon will be Zuma, Heavy Weapon, Peggle and Feeding Frenzy. All of these are terrific titles.
In the future, most PopCap games will see simultaneous releases on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but for now, it’s all about playing catch-up. The coolest part, in my opinion, is that PopCap is integrated Remote Play into these titles so you can play via your PSP. Good stuff.

Anyone who says that video games are wrong and inherently evil need to read this recent study. Once again, I stand by my grandfather’s advice. “God created alcohol so the Irish wouldn’t rule the world.”
Dublin, Ireland – 28th August 2007 — 92% of casual gaming parents and grandparents say casual games provide an opportunity for them to bond with their children/grandchildren.
PopCap Games (www.popcap.com) unveils the results of the largest-ever worldwide (including UK) survey of casual computer game players, which also reveals that 70% of ‘family gamers’ believe casual games provide educational benefits to their children/grandchildren – with greatest benefits of gameplay identified as learning, stress relief and hand-eye coordination.
