PixelJunk Monsters Gets Easier and Trophy-er

I make up words. That’s how I roll on Saturday mornings. Some updates are coming for your friendly neighborhood PixelJunk Monsters to make the game easier for your n00bs out there. The game will introduce a Casual mode for people who can’t get the hang of a few stages as well as a Hardcore mode for those of you who might not last too long.

To go along with the difficulty tweaks, Trophy whores will be pleased to know that you can blow your wad on yet another game. Huzzah!

Other tweaks in the patch include YouTube upoading support, in-game XMB soundtracks, and a few Tower balancing doodads. If you live in Japan, you got the patch this past Thursday. Those of us everywhere else in world will get the goods this coming Thursday, October 30th. Get some.

PixelJunk Games Too Hard, Patch Coming to Make Them Easier

If you’ve been struggling with PixelJunk Monsters, Q Games knows you suck at tower defense. They’ve decided to bring out a patch to make it easier for you n00bs out there. In an interview with TheBBPS, Dylan Cuthbert, the developer of all things PixelJunk, had this to say:

  • Monsters will be receiving a free patch that allows the player to progress through the game on Easy, Medium, Hard, or a new Expert mode (which I suggested he name simply “Cuthbert”); this will be available for offline play. Online rankings will maintain the existing difficulty level to maintain fairness.
  • Eden will also be receiving a patch to enable some new modes of gameplay. He described the swinging mechanic as “much too fun to waste on just one set of game rules”. I agree. He also implied that Q-Games is looking into “a more namby pamby mode for the ‘lighter’ people out there”.

Works for me. I’ve had trouble getting through some of the harder levels of PixelJunk Monsters, so maybe I’ll be able to turn down the difficulty and finish the game.

Review: PixelJunk Monsters Encore (PS3)

PixelJunk Monsters is still one of the best games released on the PSN. The terrific tower defense gameplay coupled with the cute 2D artwork and simple controls really makes this title stand out. Gamers who played through the title multiple times have been looking for more, and the team over at Q-Games has delivered with the recent expansion, PixelJunk Monsters Encore.

Encore brings an entire new island to the game, Toki Island. When you load the game after purchasing the expansion, you have to choose whether to play on the original Tiki Island or the new Toki Island. There are 15 new levels to play through in the new expansion and five new music tracks to accompany those stages. All the tracks are still performed by Otograph, so the feel of the original game remains as you go through the new levels.

MLB 08 The Show PS3 Screen Size Issues

Ryan Howard Screen 7

I’m not sure how many other people have this issue, but I figured I’d pose the question to you, our loyal readers. In the MLB 08 The Show demo for PS3, how many people do not have to adjust the screen size/position for the game to fill the screen?

I tested the demo on both my Samsung 1080p DLP as well as an LG 720p LCD and both are exhibiting the same issue where I need to increase the horizontal size. If I don’t, there are approximately 1/4″ black borders on the left and right side of the screen.

Has this happened to anyone else out there? I know this is also the case, at least for me, in PixelJunk Monsters. These are the only two PS3 titles where I’d had this issue. Let us know in the comments your experiences with screen size on either of these two games.

PixelJunk Monsters Expansion Coming Soon

According to an email from Q-Games, developer of PixelJunk Monsters for the PS3, an expansion is in the works. One Kotaku reader emailed the company asking whether a sequel or expansion was coming, and here’s what he heard back:

Thanks for the mail! We are really enjoying the feedback from people about Monsters, it seems to have really hit a sweet spot. There should be some news about an expansion pack over the next few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled.

So if you can’t get enough tower defense action, stay tuned as PixelJunk Monsters is set to deliver more gameplay for your fetish.

PixelJunk Monsters (PS3) Review

PixelJunk Monsters Screen 1

Tower defense games have been a big deal in PC gaming for the past year or so. Now that genre is being established on consoles, with the very user friendly PixelJunk Monsters. The game’s cartoony style, easy control scheme and fun gameplay are a great introduction to the genre for those that have never played any tower defense games. Here is a breakdown of some of the facets of PixelJunk Monsters for the PS3:

Presentation and Graphics: PixelJunk Monsters has a very unique 2D hand-drawn graphical style, reminiscent of the early days of console gaming. However, it’s all in lush 1080p, which looks beautiful. The simple layout of levels and character models is easy on the eyes. The only real issue I had was having to set the screen size at startup, with could use a bit more tweaking. You can only adjust the screen size, but not position. In some instances, this will result in black bars on the edges of your TV to ensure the entire game window fits on screen. 8 of 10

PixelJunk Monsters (PSN) Fact Sheet

We all love fact sheets don’t we? It’s a wonderful time when we can sit down and read all about a new game. Yeah, not terribly exciting, I know. But this game is a hell of a lot fun. We got to play it at Sony’s Media Day and were intrigued. Tower defense in a cute, easy way? I’m in. What’s that you say? It supports Remote Play on the PSP? Even sweeter.

In PixelJunk Monsters, the player controls a defender-of-the-forest character in a lush 2D environment. The player’s goal is to strategically defend the pathway to his homebase from an onslaught of various threatening monsters. In between waves of monster attacks, the player scrambles to reinforce his defenses by collecting gold coins and jewels from fallen enemies to finance new towers and research deadlier weapons. Eventually, the player can harness the elements throughout the 20 different stages to cast lightning storms across the forest. Gamers can enjoy PixelJunk Monsters with a friend in offline co-op mode, which requires careful strategy and communication. Additionally, PixelJunk Monsters will support online leaderboards for both 1p and 2p co-op.

The game is due to release this month on the PlayStation Network on a PS3 near you. No pricing has been set yet, but given the fact that PixelJunk Racers went for $6.99, I’d imagine that’s about what we’ll see for this title.
