Rocksteady Owns Batman Pirates

Screenshot-6

Anyone familiar with PC gaming knows that the ease of piracy on the platform has skyrocketed the past decade or so, which is a damn shame for both consumers and hard working developers alike.  Although it does warm my cold, black heart to see developers sticking it to piracy enthusiasts in creative ways.  It so happens that Batman: Arkham Asylum uses one of these creative ways.

On a thread in the Eidos forums, a poster named Cheshirec_the_cat made a seemingly normal, shitty grammar laden internet post about some difficulties he was having with his copy of Batman:

Hi!
I’ve got a problem when it’s time to use Batman’s glide in the game. When I hold <Space> , like it’s said to jump from one platform to another, Batman tries to open his wings again and again instead of gliding. So he fels down in a poisoning gas. If somebody could tel me, what should I do there.

To which an Eidos admin responded:

The problem you have encountered is a hook in the copy protection, to catch out people who try and download cracked versions of the game for free.

It’s not a bug in the game’s code, it’s a bug in your moral code.

Never mind that the game isn’t out on PC for another four days!  I feel I must applaud Rocksteady and Eidos on this creative use of copy protection, and while this type of thing is certainly circumvented as we speak, I’m sure it will provide a few laughs at the expense of this douche who had the balls to pirate a game and ask for support for it as well.  Better luck next time!

Street Fighter IV Leaked for Xbox 360

Street Fighter IV PS3 Collectors Edition

Ninjas and pirates are supposed to get along. There are dodgeball games that express that same sentiment. In this case, ninjas do not like pirates. Gaming piracy is a huge concern in the industry and they have successfully leaked SF IV for the Xbox 360.

Torrent sites are being assaulted by players eager to test out this long awaited title, as there are still quite a lot of days until the retail release of the game in Japan, February 12, North America, February 19, and last but not least, Europe on February 20. Also, let’s not forget that the PC version of the game still doesn’t have a concrete release date, as Capcom wants people to buy the title for the consoles first.

This is not cool. Not to sound like a hypocrite as we all used Napster back in the day. Yet, this is different. We all object to paying $60 for games fully knowing what it costs to develop games that are worth paying $60 for. However, condoning such acts is almost as bad as doing it. Expect to see the mighty banhammer come down on anyone with a bootleg copy who tries to sign on into XBL.

Robin Hood Busted

Raids

Piracy in the UK has been dealt another blow.  Last Thursday the ELSPA, Camden Trading Standards, and Met Police raided an unnamed company based in Camden, hauling in the UK’s largest seizure of illegal game copying devices.   A total in excess of 50,000 items ranging from the aforementioned game copying devices to knock off peripherals for the Wii, 360, and PS3.  They haven’t specified what illegal devices they were, and they didn’t mention the DS so I guess R4 cards aren’t on the list.   I’m curious to find out what these devices are… but I guess the ELSPA isn’t interested in distributing the names and methods of piracy.  The full press release is beyond the jump.

Cliffy B Fights Piracy One Step at a Time

Gears of War 2 got leaked already on the internet. All games get pirated, so it’s no surprise this one happened so quickly. What does Epic have planned?

In an effort to combat piracy we’re implementing a day-one patch that requires you input a unique PIN every 15 minutes.

Fake Cliff Bleszinski threw that up on his Twitter account. We know he kids, but how far are we actually away from something like this? Game developers and publishers are making things harder and harder for the people that actually buy these games.

Remember people, this was a joke. Don’t get your panties all up in a bunch at us or Cliffy.

[Update] Just found out from some sources that wish to remain unnamed that this was posted by an imposter Cliffy B. Hate when that happens.

Mexican Federal Agents Raid Game Pirating Facility in Mexico City

Raids

Another band of game pirates were apprehended yesterday when a daring raid of multiple Mexican Agencies unearthed a massive video game and movie pirating ring. The numbers of the stuff they seize is pretty staggering. Early figures indicate that 290 DVD/CD burners, 28,800 illegal copies of video games and more than 900,000 video game cover inserts were recovered.

Video game piracy is apparently rampant in Mexico City and this was the end to several month long sting. Its great for the gaming community to see federal governments take notice in what could be a huge blow into profits and development. You can expect shitty games to come out when the people who bust their ass to make them can’t earn profit and pay the devs their money. Loot Ninja offers Taco Flavored Kisses to all those who helped brings these criminals down. Remember, its better to be a MexiCAN than a Mexican’t.
