Phantasy Star Expansion - Ambitions of Illuminus Press Release

PSU 1Sega had an official press release today in which they announced the launch of the expansion for Phantasy Star Universe on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS2. It was fairly broad, but two important things were announced:

1) The expansion entitled Ambitions of Illluminus will be a downladable content on Xbox Live similar to the Oblivion Expansion.

2) There will be a special community event available for US players starting May 25 entitled “Operation Firebreak”.

Hit the jump for the official Press Release from Sega.

PSU Ambition of Illuminus - Forest Returns

Anyone who played the original Phantasy Star games for the GC, Xbox or Dreamcast will recognise the original forrest area and all of it’s old inhabitants, including the Boomas.

In a way all these videos I have posted of the vintage items and levels are a cool thing, but I also call foul on Sega for being lazy and re-hashing old levels, weapons and monsters. If the expansion will just be an attempt to add in old content, that can be done now, why wait until the holidays??

THQ Signs Multi Game Ad Deal

THQThe in-game ad firm Double Fusion inked a multi-game deal with THQ, which will allow them to place in-game advertisements in their upcoming titles and franchises. Included in the deal are not only static advertisements but also real time adverts.

I for one am on the fence about this whole in-game advertising movement. Yes I understand that the advertisement in theory will allow developers more revenue to expand their titles and offer gamers new experiences but at what cost? Will we soon begin to see a K-Mart in World of Warcraft or maybe a Best Buy in Phantasy Star Universe? I think that in-game advertising must be handled very carefully if not it will in fact cheapen our experience as gamers.

I actually had a chance to take part in what I thought was a beta test of Splinter Cell: Double Agent a while back, but it turned out to be a glorified ad agency asking how many adverts I noticed while playing. I was a bit upset by the whole thing and gave the lady a piece of my mind, I doubt she will call me back for another “test”.

PSU Ambition of Illuminus More New Weapons

Here are more scenes of the new weapons from the upcoming expansion for Phantasy Star, including new swords, pistols, bazookas, SUV and the slicer.

PSU Ambition of Illuminus New Boss

Here is some actual gameplay of the new expansion.

Phantasy Star Expansion - Ambition of Illuminus Details

PSUHere are some of the features of the new Phantasy Star expansion – Ambition of Illuminus:

-De Rol Le (PSO boss) is back as De Rolei!

-Two new classes, Acrofighter and Acrotecher. Looks like time to start leveling up your class again.

-New PA caps and weapon usage.

-Class levels go past level 10.

-Skills, bullets and techs go past 30, Acrotechers get level 50 support techs

-Grinding no longer has the chance to break weapons. Instead, failed weapon grinds reset the grind to 0. This is huge; I have broken many a good weapon for no reason.

-Tons of new clothes and hairstyles, come on Rappy hat!

-Chainsawd has been added. (I will play just for this reason alone!)

-The ability to warp to further lobbies is available, possibly for a price

-Room decoration synths are now a 100% success rate.

Here are some screenshots of the whip, chainsawd and the new Rappy Casino, enjoy.

Phantasy Star Universe Expansion - Xbox 360

PSUPhantasy Star Universe: Ambitions of Illuminus has been revealed as the sequel to my obsession, PSU on the Xbox 360. Here is the site, unfortunately it is in Japanese, but there are 8 pics. The site contains some information about a network trial that is going to be held in Japan (or so I have been told), but there is no information on how to sign up for it. I can only hope that there will be a download for it on the 360 marketplace. Scheduled street date right now is rumored for the holiday season.
