Okay, so I recently had the opportunity to get some real hands on time with both versions of Rock Band for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and here is how it breaks out. Both games are for all extensive purposes identical for either system, you can form a band or play solo tours or just rip up some quick play with friends. Each system needs an update to run the game before you even start, the PS3 version requires the latest system update as well in order to communicate with the Rock Band servers and upload your scores. Graphically the two versions are also identical, but lets face facts you aren’t getting Rock Band to look at the visuals, your playing for the music and both versions pack a punch.
As for the peripherals, this is where the two versions differ a bit. The drums and the mic are identical between the two systems, but the Fender Stratocasters are different. The Xbox 360 version has a wired Fender while the PS3 version has a wireless version, now a lot of you like me would probably give the edge off the bat to the wireless version, but I think I prefer the wired. The wireless version requires you to have a small dongle hanging from your PS3 and also requires 3 AA batteries in order to run, the biggest offense on the wireless is that in order to change out the batteries you need to have a screwdriver! What engineer thought this would be a good idea?

A lot of gamers have complained of their systems getting very hot and until now the Wii didn’t have a solution. Nyko has just shipped out the Intercooler for Wii systems to help keep your Wii nice and frosty. Maybe now I can lie my Wii down without fear of it catching fire, although the design of the Intercooler does look a bit spotty with a “made in a sweat shop factory feel”, but let’s see how it does.
From the official press realease:
Los Angeles, CA - October 10, 2007 - Nyko Technologies®, a premier peripherals manufacturer, announced today that it has shipped the Intercooler for Wii to retailers nationwide, giving Wii gamers the ultimate solution for keeping their innovative console running under optimal conditions.

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360’s HD-DVD will be updated sometime in 2008. The news was revealed at Microsoft’s 25th hardware anniversary party in London.
No word on exactly what we can expect from this update, but I’m assuming it will just be a faster drive. If it’s anything else, I think Microsoft will have a lot of angry customers on their hands. Not only have they redesigned the Xbox 360 during it’s life cycle to add new hardware features (HDMI ports), but now peripherals might be outdated within 2 years on the same console life cycle?
Here’s to hoping that’s not the case, but this editor is skeptical.

Looks like Take Two has decided to divest itself from the video game acessories business by selling of it’s subsidiary Joytech to the evil empire of accessories - Mad Catz. So looks like Mad Catz will strengthen their accessory monopoly while Take Two will focus more on games, which I think is good. Take Two needs to go make more Bioshock’s and not worry about controllers, go and be quick about it.
From the press release:
New York, NY - September 7, 2007 - Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTWO) today announced that it has sold substantially all of the assets of its wholly owned Joytech video game accessories subsidiary to Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. (AMEX/TSX: MCZ). The Joytech sale reflects Take-Two’s previously announced plans to divest its non-core businesses.

In an interview that RedOctane co-founder, Charles Huang, had with CNET he confirmed that their team is working with Nintendo, through some engineering issues in order to get out the new Guitar Hero III game on the DS. Also discussed are a unique peripheral for the GH game on the DS and also a promise of a unique style of play. We are all looking forward to this title on a handheld, should be great.
CNET.com.au: What can you tell us about Guitar Hero III DS?
CH: We are working on that. We’re exploring a lot of things. We’re hoping to really bring the experience to the DS and to do some very, very different approaches. We’re working through a lot of engineering issues with Nintendo. I actually came from a set of meetings with them last week about this. While the technical path hasn’t been set yet, we intend for this to be a very unique experience just like Guitar Hero was on consoles. This will play probably unlike any other DS game that has come out, and at this stage, that’s all I’m afraid we can talk about until we have the engineering paths laid out with Nintendo.

I recently took a trip to my local Best Buy in the hopes to find a 60 Gb PS3, both because of the $100 price drop and the fact that I wanted to watch 300 in Blu-Ray. So I stroll on into the mecca of all thigns electronic and make my way to the video games sectiona nd what od I see:
- Xbox 360 Elite boxes lying around and lots of Premium 360 and games with Halo 3 Pre-order boxes everywhere
- Still no Wii’s but lots of games and peripherals
- Lots of 60 Gb PS3’s on the shelf, but no peripherals or games (20 Gb has gone extinct)
Seems that Best Buy has had a huge influx of people purchsaing PS3’s isnce the price break and as of this week’s flyer they will begin to carry the 80 Gb version this week at $599. Looks like I will need to act fast and grab a 60 Gb PS3 before they run out, even if I don’t get any software for it.
Trying to find 300 in Blu-Ray is turning out to be quite the task as well and games for the PS3 were limited to Pirates of the Carribean and Need for Speed Carbon, not exactly the first games I want to throw in my PS3, the games and Blu-Ray sections for PS3 were patheticaclly empty and I think a huge sign for the success the price break has had on their business. Looks like I will get my PS3 this week and just rock out some PSN games for the time being.
So how wild would it be to see a new wave of consoles to hit the streets in 2008. Everyone has their current favorite when it comes to a handheld and their next generation console right? What if there were some new additions next year to make your decision making even more difficult. Stranger things have happened and there are two possibilities that I can see happening.
1) SEGA mans up and decides to strap on a set and go back to making consoles. I was a huge fan of the Dreamcast system and thought it had some memorable titles and some interesting peripherals like the VMU’s, controllers and keyboard to name a few. SEGA could use all it’s market research and all the differeent opinions everyone has expressed with the existing three next generation consoles and make the perfect console. One that would not die (360), one that was not a gimmick (Wii) and one that was not overpriced (PS3). SEGA could come out into the battle field and mop up the mess that is the current next gen console war, come on SEGA go get the daddy pants and make us a SEGA Saturn Xtreme.
2) Microsoft decides to hit another gaming market and fully develop and launch their handheld gaming system. This could change the face of gaming if MS decided to delve in and give Nintendo a run for it’s money in the handheld market. Just imagine a handheld with the processing power of a 360, with wifi, chat & messaging, a small HD, and LIVE. I drool just thinking of this handheld monster. This could really take a chunk of the DS marketshare, just look at the PSP and it’s current success.
What do you think…?
