Review: Plants vs. Zombies (PC, Mac)

Plants vs Zombies Screen

It takes a lot for a game to really steal my attention and makes hours disappear like they were minutes. Plants vs. Zombies easily fits into that category. Every time I sit down and say “I’ll play for a few minutes”, it turns into a few hours. The game takes the tower defense genre, flips it around a few times, adds a touch of humor, and makes you not want to walk away.

Screenshots: Precusors

Precusors spaceship

Fresh from Russia (aka the Motherland) are new screenshots for Precusors on Windows and Xbox 360.  Precusors is looking like a neat package of RPG, FPS, and Space Simulator, kinda like Privateer with a FPS bit tacked on.  You’ve got a number of alien races, you and your spaceship… expect trouble.

While the graphics don’t blow my pants off it does seem that the game will provide a wide variety of.. well everything.  I’m hoping the game play will stand up strong and the game doesn’t end up being jack off of all trades and master of fuck all.  No release dates or demos yet so will need to keep an eye on this to see how this develops.

In Soviet Russia, spaceship flys you!  More screens beyond the jump.

GTA IV for PC Broken

Dedicated PC gamers have been waiting for GTA IV, arguably one of the best games ever made to finally come to PC. Well, this is not what they have been waiting for. According to widespread message boards, the game is having huge problems, so much that it is almost unplayable. In a recent interview, the devs are asked every posisble question on what is wrong, what they plan for a fix, and anything else you want to know. A must read for anyone who has the game or plans on buying it.

WoW Super Guild Beats Wrath of the Lich King… in 4 Days

World of Warcraft players have waited for what it seems like ages for a new expansion pack and finally received it last week when Wrath of the Lich King was released. Gamers figured to be treated to months of new quests, dungeons, raiding, and everything else that WoW players do. Two of the best Guilds in the world united under one banner to be the first to beat the expansion pack. Well, hundreds of hot pockets later and God knows how many cans of Red Bull, they did it. In 4 days. The beat everything. Now, they are not as happy as they thought they would be.

We are proud to declare that all WOTLK PVE raid content has now been cleared. This is both a moment of triumph and a cause for concern. The question in all our minds right now is if we could do this, how soon until the rest of the top guilds in the world clear all the raid content that WOTLK has to offer? Did Blizzard miscalculate in the tuning of these encounters? Or is this Blizzard folding under the weight of a large casual player base that demands to be on equal footing with end-game raiders?

I don’t know guys, maybe Blizzard figured you would not have played for probably 96 straight hours and have every imaginable item, spell, sword, special hat, strap-on, whatever. You guys also did everything in your power to beat the game as fast as possible and are now surprised that you beat the game in 4 fucking days? Its like the gamers who raced through Halo 3 or Gears 2 overnight. I fully understand how much larger WoW is in every aspect, but if the game was tailored to the most hardcore players, the millions of casuals would just say fuck it. It’s called pacing yourselves. If you wanted to be the first, hey, job well done. Very impressive. Just don’t bitch when the ride you sped through is over. Thats called “Tough Shit” in the World of Reality.

Second Life Affair Leads to Real Life Divorce

I don’t usually take joy in the misery of others, but this shit is hysterical. A British woman filed for divorce after her husband of several years was laying the woodmeat on another woman in the game Second Life. This is her response when asked how she felt:

I went mad – I was so hurt. I just couldn’t believe what he’d done,” Amy said, of finding her feckless hubby having pretend sex in a game with a stranger.

I looked at the computer screen and could see his character having sex with a female character. It’s cheating as far as I’m concerned.

As far as I am concerned, you need help. To make this even funnier, guess how the two met? In a chatroom. They probably started cybering or whatever those sick bastards do and they eventually got married. I’m sure she is very attractive, physically fit and has oral hygiene beyond reproach. I bet the guy is a regular James Bond himself.  They should make a new game called, Sweet Life, where losers can just yell at each other all day.  Oh right… thats called Halo 3 multiplayer. Hey-yo.

Review: The Witcher – Enhanced Version (PC)

The Witcher for the PC is one of those games that reminds you of a brand new BMW, but covered in some dirt. Beneath the surface of the imperfection is a really great game with a compelling story and hundreds of hours of gameplay. The game was that good where you played it despite the obvious flaws, which there were numerous. So what did the guys from Atari do? They fixed almost all the issues and released an updated title that gamers desperately wanted and deserved.

Review: Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway (PC)

Before I type anything, I must first say that I have never, before a week ago, played a single Brothers in Arms game. I think the main reason is because when the first in the series came out, there was already a large influx of WWII games out (Medal of Honor, Call of Duty… Wolfenstein) so it kind of got put into the generic stack. Playing this game, though, makes me feel very, very awful for not taking a deeper look into this game. I am a huge WWII buff, so I can say the authenticity of this game is verging on erotic. So, without further adieu, let’s cut the bullshit and get to Nazi slaughter.

You’d like to think that a trip to Holland would be peaceful, but in the iron grip of Nazi Germany, a stroll through the park was liable to get you hung. The Dutch countryside is absolutely vibrant, the houses detailed and very war torn in some cases. Gearbox did a phenomenal job on recreating the small farms and mills dotting the landscape. When pressed into cities later, the detail does not let up. Cracked sills, broken dining equipment, decimated homes are all part of the visual tour in wait for you. Of course, some of the textures are reused, but show me a game that doesn’t redo some odds and ends and I’ll show you a game where the creators probably did blow the whole way through. Comical drug references aside, you really don’t notice any texture redux while capping Der Nazis. The rest of the game is just as gorgeous as the landscapes – mechanical textures have very nice lighting effects of the metal, faces are human and very weathered, you can see the pain and dirt etched into every crevasse. This level of detail continues again into the firearms used – everyone sounds and looks like it’s real life counterpart. If you ever wondered what it might sounds like to have an MG42 provide suppressing fire right next to your head, this is the game to find out. Strangely, they provide realism in some aspects, and not in others. For example, you can fire a gun at a window and it won’t crack, but mortar shells and bazookas leave craters in the ground.

Portal: Prelude Released on PC

Can’t get enough Portal? You’re not alone. An independent student developer has created and released Portal: Prelude on the PC. As long as you have Portal and Steam installed, you’re good to go.

Portal: Prelude, as its name states it, is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, but also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa’s superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell…

Sounds like a plan to me. I’ll be downloading later today on my Windows laptop to give it a whirl. If you have Portal already on your PC, get Prelude. It’s free, so there’s no reason to not get it.
