As all of you Halo fans know by now, the second title update for Halo 3 went live a little while back. There have been some technical behind-the-scenes tweaks that none of us need to know about, so we can just take Bungie’s word for it. They have also added new Achievements for everyone to fanatically go fire up some Social Slayer and take the easy road to get. Aside from all of that, we would like to break down the most interesting change: the addition of playlist specific experience points and military rankings.
Basically, what Bungie has done was add experience points and military rankings to each of the game’s playlists. Nothing is being taken away or reset, so there is no need to fret, folks. Each playlist will have a military ranking based purely on experience points instead of a Trueskill rating. So, let’s say you have a Colonel rank in the global ranking system with “X” number of experience points. Now, you enter into your Lone Wolves playlist for the first time and place in the top half. That will gain one experience point for that playlist and one for your global experience along with the normal military ranking.
In the end, each playlist has it’s own experience point and military ranking, it’s that simple! If you don’t believe us, just go check out bungie.net for a much more in depth explanation. In the meantime, I am going to go work on my Lightswitch Achievement.
Last December, High Velocity Bowling made its debut on the PSN. It’s a solid title, but was lacking a few elements to make it great, namely online multiplayer. You can only get so far bowling alone in your underwear in your living room. Trust me, I should know. But, today, Sony and Team Ramrod are making the game that much better with a free patch that introduces a whole heap of new features.
The biggest new addition in today’s free patch is online multiplayer action. You’ll be able to challenge anyone in the world to see who can knock the pins down the best. The game supports voice chat and will have the leaderboards updated weekly so you can see how you fare against the world. A Trophy system is also being introduced, so all you whores out there can try to level up. Above that, playlist and music playback during games has been tweaked to use the XMB player instead of the in-game system, you can now choose which alley you want to bowl in for your match, and new trick shots have been added.
To add a touch of realism, Team Ramrod has introduced ball bags to the game, and not the way you thing you sicko. Previously, you could use any ball at any time during the game. In real life, you just can’t carry that many to the lane. You can create up to 24 custom ball bags that each contain 4 bowling balls, so set them up wisely for your play style and various lane oil patterns.
I’m looking forward to trying out the new features and hopping back into this one. I’ll try it out tonight after my real world bowling league. Yep, I’m a dork.
I sort-of knew about this, but I thought it was corrected with the announcement of Scrabble Bonjour, where users can play against other iPhone Scrabblers over WiFi. Well, it turns out, Apple has no implementation in their SDK to allow for gaming over the internet. You will only be able to play locally on the same wireless network.
Everyone is talking about the iPhone being better than the DS or PSP in terms of mobile gaming. Until Apple allows online play in the SDK, there is a big hurdle for larger games to try to make their way to the iPhone. For a device that is always connected to at least a cellular network, it’s shocking that Apple isn’t allowing this. Hell, you could probably play some of these games against other players using 3G data and not WiFi.
Well people, the Beta period for Metal Gear Online is over. After all the debacle with signing up, most people stopped playing with GTA was released. There were definitely a few bugs, but overall it was a fun experience.
Check out our impressions of how it all went down here. I’m hoping more game modes get added for the final release next month. Differentiating yourself from the competition is what’s needed in the online shooter market.
For this week’s Game With Loot Ninja night, how about you tell us what you want to play? We’ll run the poll until Wednesday afternoon to see what game everyone wants to try to whoop our asses in.
If there’s something you want to play that’s not on the list, leave it on the comments and I’ll add it to the poll.
Will the loss of dedicated servers for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 affect your purchase?
No way in heck. I wanted it for the multiplayer experience. (83%, 278 Votes)
I'm a little miffed, but still buying it. (13%, 44 Votes)
BAH, the multiplayer is full of aim-bots, and cheaters anyways. I'm buying it for the single player campaign. (4%, 13 Votes)
My brother in law came home from college for the weekend and we put in some serious hours at Halo 3 online. On Friday night, we started around 9pm and played until 3am.
That’s enough, you would think? Nope. Saturday night, after playing Call of Duty 4 for a few hours on PS3, we fired Halo 3 back up around 11pm and played until 5am. A short nap until 10am Sunday morning and we were at it again, playing from 10:45 until 4pm.
Yeah, it was a lot of Halo. Mostly spent in Team Slayer and Team Doubles, we had a shitload of fun. To anyone we met online, thanks for the friend requests. I think I ended up getting 15 (could only accept 5 because my friends list of full). To all of those we pwned, go practice
We’re going to make this a weekly feature here at Loot Ninja. Once a week, we’ll be hosting a multiplayer gaming night where you can try your damndest to whoop our asses. This week we’ll be playing Monday night at 8pm ET. The game: Warhawk for PS3.
If you’re interested, drop a line in this post and/or send me a friend request on PS3 (”drunk_pandas”). We’ll be playing all sorts of maps and game types, whatever everyone decides.
We’ll be running polls for future game choices for the Game with Loot Ninja nights. If you have a suggestion, let us know.
Cartoon style free PC shooters. There’s a genre we can all get in, right? EA looks to capitalize on this with Battlefield Heroes. Here’s the debut trailer for your online fragging pleasure. I hope this comes out for Mac as well as PC.
We’ve had some pretty negative press about Mario Kart for Wii lately, so how about something pleasant, yeah? Battle Mode will feature 8 player online combat.
If you’re new to Mario Kart or Battle Mode, you basically go around a large enclosure (not so much a track) where you try to destroy your opponents with weapons pickups. It’s an insane amount of fun, even more-so than straight up racing if you ask me.
Even though you can’t tea-bag your fallen opponent or stream how much you pwn (or even text it), you’ll still have some fun shooting someone down with a red turtle shell.
