See, Sony, Price DOES Matter

PS3 Slim

It took Sony a while to realize that price matters. After finally slashing the price of the PS3 to $299, they came out on top in console sales for the month of September, selling 491.8K units. The Wii sold 462.8K and the Xbox 360 sold 352.6K, while the Nintendo DS topped the overall hardware charts, again, moving 524.2K units according to this month’s NPD sales data.

With a good price, a solid marketing campaign, and a blockbuster title like Uncharted 2, Sony should see a pretty solid Holiday season. It’s just a shame it took them this long to bring the PS3 pricing in line with the competition and what the market demanded.

Now, let’s all put our fanboy hats down and enjoy the games. I’m going to go finish Uncharted 2 and spend a lot of time in Pandora with Borderlands.

Why We’re Not Reporting NPD Numbers Anymore

Wii Love Money

You may have noticed a lack of NPD reporting here at Loot Ninja recently. We’ve decided that it’s just not worth writing about anymore. There’s a few reasons, but mainly gamers just don’t care that much. Does the fact that the Xbox 360 had a 6 percent year-over-year drop affect how you’re going to be gaming? No. Will reading about these sales numbers have you running out to buy stock? Probably not.

The other big reason is that NPD’s are becoming less and less a true representation of the real sales landscape. Hell, they don’t include Wal-Mart, the biggest retailer in North America. You can bet your ass a lot of games and systems get sold there. Also, no digital distribution is counted towards their sales figures. With this model becoming increasingly prevalent, the numbers being reported can’t be seen as a true representation of what is actually sold over the past month.

Now, don’t get me wrong, if someone crazy happens, you know we’ll be talking about it. But in typical months where it’s the same story (Nintendo rapes the competition), we feel there’s better material to discuss about actual games.

NPD Sales Data – March 2009

Wii Love Money

Even though Nintendo took the lead again this month, the industry saw a year over year 17% drop in sales. The Xbox 360 is the only console to see year over year growth, while everyone else dropped a bit.

  • Wii – 601K
  • Nintendo DS – 563K
  • Xbox 360 – 330K
  • PlayStation 3 – 218K
  • PSP – 168K
  • PlayStation 2 – 112K

Not too shabby overall, but you can definitely see the effects of the economic recession. Hit the jump to see how software sales ended up.

NPD Sales Data – February 2009

Wii Love Money

Come on people, stop thinking Nintendo isn’t going to pwn the competition. Maybe one day later this year, who knows. But for now, bow down to your video game overlords.

  • Wii – 753K
  • Nintendo DS – 588K
  • Xbox 360 – 391K
  • PlayStation 3 – 276K
  • PSP – 199K
  • PlayStation 2 – 131K

Software numbers weren’t too shabby last month either. You can check them out after the jump.

NPD Sales Data – January 2009

Wii Love Money

Did you honestly think Nintendo wouldn’t come out on top again? One of these months, either the Wii or DS will fall to number 3 or lower. Who knows when it’ll happen.

Overall sales saw a 13% year of year increase, which is pretty damn good considering the current economic climate.

  • Wii – 679.2K
  • Nintendo DS – 510.8K
  • Xbox 360 – 309K
  • PlayStation 3 – 203.2K
  • PSP – 172.3K
  • PlayStation 2 – 101.2K

Top 5 Best Selling Games of 2008 Worldwide

top520081

For whatever reason the current economic crisis didn’t smack around the game industry like other industries, instead it flourished.  Across the three main global gaming markets there was an overall sales increase.  The U.S. saw an increase of 15 percent while the U.K. had an increase of 26 percent.  The Japanese market didn’t fare as well, declining 13 percent.  Still, the three markets totaled 409.9 million units in 2008 or an 11 percent increase.  Not too shabby.

The global sales list was compiled by totalling the numbers from NPD, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain, the three main stat trackers from each region.  Before you take a peek at the list, guess which game took the top spot?  I said no peeking!

  1. Mario Kart Wii – 8.94 million
  2. Wii Fit - 8.31 million
  3. Grand Theft Auto IV – 7.29 million
  4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 6.32 million
  5. Call of Duty: World at War – 5.89 million

I bet you didn’t see that coming.  Nintendo owns three of the top five spots on the list, all of which are first-party titles.  Grand Theft Auto IV and Call of Duty: World at War both benefit from being multi-platform titles.  Makes a person wonder.

Any guesses on which game will lead next year’s global sales list?

2008’s Top Selling Games

The NPD Group released the top selling console video games for 2008. Going over this list, a few things popped into my mind. Have a look, then we’ll discuss.

  1. WII PLAY W/ REMOTE – 5.28 million
  2. WII MARIO KART W/ WHEEL – 5.00 million
  3. WII FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD – 4.53 million
  4. WII SUPER SMASH BROS: BRAWL – 4.17 million
  5. 360 GRAND THEFT AUTO IV – 3.29 million
  6. 360 CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR – 2.75 million
  7. 360 GEARS OF WAR 2 – 2.31 million
  8. PS3 GRAND THEFT AUTO IV – 1.89 million
  9. 360 MADDEN NFL 09 – 1.87 million
  10. NDS MARIO KART – 1.65 million

First off, only one PS3 game makes the list and only at 1.89 million units sold, which isn’t a good sign for Sony’s console. Second, and more importantly, is that a game released in November 2005 is still in the top 10 games sold in 2008. Mario Kart DS has some damn long legs. In my eyes, it’s the best Mario Kart, but still selling that many copies three years later? Just wow. Finally, Wii Play outsold both console versions of GTA IV combined. Impressive.

What are your thoughts? Remember, this is just for console games, so don’t go throwing that PC stuff in here. Those numbers aren’t out yet.

NPD Sales Data – December 2008

Even though we’re in a recession, a lot of product got sold in December. All in all, the industry saw a 9% year over year increase in sales. Not too shabby. Who came out on top in hardware? Do you even have to ask? Surprisingly, though, the DS took the top spot with over 3 million units sold. Pretty insane. Also interesting to see the Xbox 360 best the PlayStation 3 by a 2-to-1 margin. Sony needs to step up their game, even though the PS3 saw a nice increase in year over year sales as well.

  • Nintendo DS – 3.04 million
  • Wii – 2.15 million
  • Xbox 360 – 1.44 million
  • PlayStation Portable – 1.02 million
  • PlayStation 3 – 726K
  • PlayStation 2 – 410K

Again, Nintendo is wiping their asses with $100 bills. Check out the software numbers after the jump.

NPD Sales Data – November 2008

Nintendo reigns supreme yet again. This time, they did it with authority. Over 2 million Wii’s and over 1.5 million DS’s were sold. Holy freaking shit! Everyone else combined can’t even touch that. Just like what was reported, the PS3 was outsold by the Xbox 360 almost 3 to 1. Sony’s console is really taking a back-seat over here in the US. By the looks of things, I’d have to say “what recession?”

  • Wii – 2.04mil
  • Nintendo DS – 1.57mil
  • Xbox 360 – 836K
  • PSP – 421K
  • PlayStation 3 – 378K
  • PlayStation 2 – 206K

Check out the software numbers after the break.

NPD Sales Data – October 2008

Holy lots of Wiis, Batman! Over 800k? Really? Ninteno accounted for almost 60% of the total hardware sales in October, which is just insane. The PS3 also lagged far behind the competition with the Xbox 360 almost doubling it in sales after the $199 price drop. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Wii – 803K
  • Nintendo DS – 491K
  • Xbox 360 – 371K
  • PSP – 193K
  • PlayStation 3 – 190K
  • PlayStation 2 – 136K

Not too shabby for the month before the Holiday rush. Check out the software breakdown after the jump.
