Review: Band Hero

Band Hero - Judy Nails and Midori

The latest in Activision’s “Hero” series is a stark contrast to games past. Band Hero sheds the rock for radio-friendly pop music. Tweens rejoice. If you listen to the Top 40 station on the radio all day and don’t get tired of it, this game might be just for you.

$138 Gets You a Box of Rocks at Wal-Mart

rocks

What happens when an average American mom walks into the average American super store to buy her average American son a Nintendo DS? Shenanigans. A Florida woman was surprised to find the $138 dollars she spent on a handheld turned out to be rocks wrapped in newspaper. Wal-Mart told her to contact Nintendo and Nintendo shrugged it off as a Wal-Mart problem. What makes this so absurd is that someone returned the SAME BOX OF ROCKS a week earlier and some shithead put it back on the shelf for resale. The woman got a refund and a $20 gift card for her troubles, but this is not the first time people have bought gaming merchandise only to get burned. Quality control needs to step it up a little.

Review: Blue Dragon Plus

blue_dragon_plus_box_art

SERIOUSLY FOLKS, CAN’T WE JUST STAPLE THE WORLD BACK TOGETHER OR SOMETHING?? THOSE CUBES ARE CREEPIN’ ME OUT…

This entry in the Blue Dragon series marks a bit of a milestone for me. I’ve really never been a big RTS gamer, but I’ve always been fond of a good RPG. And although the first Blue Dragon was a very traditionally-styled Japanese RPG, Plus was made as blend between the two genres – very much in the style of Heroes of Mana and Final Fantasy XII: Revanent Wings. I’ve always found the combination strange but ultimately pretty damned enjoyable. The fact that developers Mistwalker, Brownie Brown and Feelplus have joined forces also warrants a look at this game that you might not have given it before.

That being said, let’s hop in and see what all the fuss is about.

Fake DS Crew Busted!

Happy days are here!  The wonderful couple from Kent who have been selling fake DS consoles and games are now spending some quality time with the folks at Bromley Trading Standards Department and the local Kent Police Department.  A raid on the happy homestead netted a seizure of 150 counterfeit games and 40 counterfeit Nintendo DS consoles with potentially dangerous power supplies.  The games were for the Nintendo DS and Gameboy Advance.  The early investigation indicates the couple earned in excess of GBP 50,000 in December 2008.  I’m happy to hear these two are on ice for all the people they have screwed over this holiday season, all the kids who opened their gifts and got crap or got hurt from dangerous and poor equipment.

Best Buy Vending Machines Offer Nintendo DS Products

So you arrive at the airport just in time to find out your flight has been delayed by a few hours, what do you do?  Buy a Nintendo DS Lite and brand new copy of Mario Kart of course!  Best Buy Express vending machines have recently been spotted at the Atlanta International Airport which include various electronic items along with a bunch of popular Nintendo DS titles and the handheld itself.  If you were ill prepared for your flight, you now have some options.

The products are priced right around the retail mark, there isn’t any airport price gouging on Nintendo products I guess.  My main concern would be what to do if that Nintendo DS you just paid full price for gets stuck on it’s way out of the machine.  This isn’t just a bag of Cheetos.

We have seen machines like these before that include other various electronics but it’s nice to see some gaming products readily available for your gaming pleasure.

Nintendo Invades Bookstores

So I was wandering through a large UK bookstore chain earlier this week when I came across this display (apologies for the quality this was from my phone):

A Nintendo DS display case.  Selling Nintendo’s in a bookstore?  The games on offer here are mainly brain training, classic games, and cooking games.  No Zelda, Mario, or anything else of the sort, just educational entertainment and non-games.  I did notice how the 100 Classic Book Collection title was absent.

Reading books is an activity widely accepted to help further one’s intelligence while playing video games has generally been regarded as a method to waste one’s life away.  To me, this is a huge step forward for video games to become part of mainstream culture and general lifestyle.

Well done Nintendo, you are helping make books an obsolete media and having the bookstores realize it and cash in on the Nintendo Money Train.  Now can we get a game that is not a platformer, RPG, or strategy game for my DS?  And I don’t want any more brain training, cook books, or anything of that sort.

Read or Play?

On the 26th of December you will now be able to use your DS as a book with ‘100 Classic Book Collection’.  Titles such as Gulliver’s Travel, Around the World in Eighty Days, and more will make use of the DS dual screens to present text to you like pages in a book.  No real graphical adventures here, just your imagination.  All for GBP 20.

Some neat futures that will make this better than a normal book are:

  • Electronic book marking (if this wasn’t there then you shouldn’t buy it).
  • The ability to download additional titles to the DS.
  • Mood suggestions provides a list of titles to match your mood.

I think this will make the DS a little more engaging to everyone.  Parents can feel their kids get more out of their video games by offering reading.  For one I, pretending to be an adult, don’t have to carry a book and my DS on the train for entertainment anymore.  As a bonus this title is cheaper than buying each of the actual books individually.

Review: Myst (Nintendo DS)

Developer: Hoplite Research Publisher: Midway Games

Myst was an amazing classic title for the PC that hardcore gamers and non-gamers alike purchased and enjoyed.  Myst managed to draw people in with its sharp graphics (at the time), mysterious setting, storytelling through the journals and books, and challenging with the puzzles providing an overall good and fairly original experience.  The puzzles were complex and confusing, and just admit it, everyone cheated to figure out how to beat some of those puzzles or they just clicked frantically everywhere.
