Impressions: Netflix (PS3)

Netflix PS3 Screen

The Xbox 360 has had the Netflix service for over a year.  It’s got this streaming shit down.  Well, it should.  But crashing into the party is the PS3 with it’s disc based application for the online streaming service.  You essentially have had a year long relationship with your 360 chick when all of a sudden this new “dreamy” black slim kid shows up in a leather jacket.  He comes around like the alter-Fonz (or Micheal Jackson) and says he can do the same tricks you can do in hopes of stealing your girl from you.  Jumping a pool full of sharks? Maybe.  Are there enough positives in the new dude to warrant using him to see what he can do? Or do you check him out and go with the old standby “one of the guys” for your viewing pleasure?  Find out after the jump.

PS3 Netflix Disc Arriving Friday!

Netflix PS3

Hey what up Loot Ninja!?  I just got an e-mail today to let me know that the Netflix PS3 disc will be hitting my snail mail box this Friday (November 6th).  Wait! That’s tomorrow!  Holy crap! For those of you out of the feed, the Netflix service (online streaming) will be making it’s way over to the PS3 this Friday.

I can’t wait to watch a few British TV shows before I get back into Uncharted 2!  I’ll have to just insert the Netflix disc in the PS3 to boot into the service like it was a game, but this will give Netflix subscribers access to an extensive library of movies and TV shows for online streaming.  It’s essentially the same service used for the Xbox 360, but mark this off the list of something that the SexBox can do that the PS3 can’t.

Netflix Streaming on the 360 Improves

nxenetflix

As those with an Xbox 360 know, yesterday was their bug summer update. Among other things, this added an improved Netflix streaming client to the service, which you’ll download the first time you start up Netflix after the update. Last night I tested out the new client, and it is a huge improvement over what was there before.

Impressions: Xbox 360 NXE Update

NXE Update

For most of us gamers out there, updates to the 360 come to us as we awake from our afternoon nap, throw off the loose Cheetos that hang on to our sweatpants, and boot up the console, only to see what looks like an error message. We rub our eyes sleepily to get the goop out and hope to goodness that Xbox Live isn’t down.

Coming soon though is an NXE update that I think everyone will benefit from in some way. I was lucky enough to send in my survey and be selected for the second wave of NXE preview program invites. Over the past week or so I have been able to put the NXE update through its paces (minus the Netflix updates which I don’t have) and will give my impressions so far on the update coming August 11th.

Netflix has Over 1 Million Xbox Live Activations

nxenetflix

One of the most unique features included in Microsoft’s NXE Update for the Xbox 360 was the ability to stream movies instantly from Netflix.  All you need is an Xbox Live Gold subscription and a Netflix account.  It seems the service is quite the hit.

Netflix has announced that over 1 million Xbox 360 users have activated their console to stream videos instantly to their console and they have watched 1.5 billion minutes of programming in the process.

Netflix’s library of about 12,000 instant movies and television series is mostly compiled of older content.  Studios have been reluctant to allow their content to be streamed instantly.

I have to admit, I have used the service quite heavily for television series that I previously wouldn’t have watched on network television but the choices are fairly slim.  Hopefully Netflix can hash out more deals with studios so we have a better selection in the future.

NXE and Netflix

Over at Gamerscoreblog there are some new photos of how the Netflix section of the New Xbox Experience will look.  All Xbox live gold members that reside in the U.S.A. with a Netflix unlimited subscription of any kind will be able to watch over 12,000 movies from their instant queue for free in NXE.  Nothing we really haven’t heard before but it does pose a simple question, will we be able to add movies to our instant queue from our Xbox or do we need to run to the computer to do this?  Hopefully everything is streamlined and we are able to do this simple task from the Xbox itself but from the looks of things it just doesn’t seem like that is likely.

We would appreciate more information than this but at least we have photos, right guys?

New Xbox 360 Experience Dated

All of the awesome changes promised to us at E3 this year will finally hit home on November 19th. This should include the ability to stream Netflix to your Xbox 360, and hopefully in HD. Avatars will also be a welcomed addition among other surprises.  This will be available in 26 countries and in 11 languages.

Netflix Dumps HD-DVD for BluRay

bluray1.jpg

Aaaand the format wars are coming even closer to being over. Blockbuster only rents BluRay in store, and now Netflix is dropping HD-DVD from it’s online lineup. Current library titles will remain until the stock is depleted, but that will be it.

HD-DVD is really hanging on by a thread. The longer is stays around, the longer consumer confusion will remain. It’s better for the industry as a whole to have one format, and hopefully the move by Netflix will push the bar further to ending this drawn out battle.
