This is one of the coolest things I have seen in awhile. Take The Dark Knight, one of the best movies this year, but reimagine it as a NES game. Hard to do with the games we are used to nowadays. This user vid has recreated the cinematic into a classic NES opening. Watch it all to the end. Mini-spoiler at the end of you have not seen TDK yet. If so, punch yourself in the balls. No excuse.
I am here to point the finger of blame. With today’s ongoing debates and misinformed media coverage on sex and violence in gaming, blame has been cast on many. Retailers, for not verifying age at purchase, the gaming industry as a whole, GTA IV, the parents who allow their children to play these games, just kidding, no one blames them. But, there is one singular entity that has been absent from this game of buck passing and I’m here to call it out. I’m talking to you, NES. That’s right, the original Nintendo Entertainment System.
Allow me to explain. I’m going to speak in some generalities here, but stay with me. I got my NES for Christmas in 1987, happy day. I was 10 years old, then. A lot of kids got a Nintendo that year, and a lot of parents were glad to buy this toy to make the kids happy. Then, something strange happened, something never before in the history of the gaming console world, the games meant something to us. We weren’t just blasting rocks, we were saving princesses. We weren’t just jumping barrels (no disrespect to Mario), we were saving the world with a new agent from Fox Hound. Games didn’t take a few minutes or hours, they took months and we played every night and saved our game and came back to pick up these grand adventures where we left them the night before.
Bionic Commando for the NES (also known as Top Secret: Hitlers Revival in Japan) was a sequel to the popular arcade game of the same name in Japan (Top Secret). Not too many people remember that. What they do remember is the blistering difficulty the game was known for. Now I’m sure some of you were thinking “Hey, I’ve played that and it wasn’t too hard…pussy”. Those people can bite me. As I played through a couple of days ago, I’ll admit it wasn’t as hard as it used to be. But it was still goddamn hard. Remember, at the time, lots of us were used to Mario-esque platformers. And seeing as how Bionic Commando had no jump button, you can imagine the frustration. It wasn’t unlike ripping out one of our thumbs. But at the same time, we were introduced to the joys of killing Nazis in video games.
Today is 6/9/08. Heh-heh… 69. Anyway, here is whats new this week in the Virtual Console and WiiWare. We get a Pokemon game, a NES classic, and another NES game I have never heard of. Hit the jump for all the details.
Yes, I know that Game Boy was invented. Did you know that you can actually bring the NES with you in a portable fashion that actually plays the old cartridges? Here is a link where you can find all about it.
So I’m checking out press releases and such for interesting ideas I could post for you all. However it seems to be a rather slow news day in videogame world (except for Drunk Pandas, sorry man, ouch). So rather than give you a story on the local middles school’s bake sale or an elderly pedestrians recall of Christmas seasons past, I thought I would give you my personal wish list of games I’d like to see for Nintendo’s Virtual Console.
And seeing as how our fans make this site as popular as it is (thanks by the by), feel free to chime in if I’ve left any out. Maybe NOA will see this and expedite their release. As you all know, timing is everything.
