If you’re Wii is blinking blue, fire it up to find an update to the Check Mii Out Channel. Here’s what’s new:
In the Posting Plaza, you can now easily find all the Miis you’ve posted
When viewing a Mii Artisan’s profile, you can now select to see all Miis posted by that Artisan
If you cancel out of judging a contest a return later, any Miis you’ve selected previously for the contest will be retained
Parental Controls are now supported in the channel. If a user chooses to block “exchange of user generated content” from the Parental Controls menu in Wii Settings, users will be prompted to enter the Parental Controls PIN in order to enter the channel
When viewing Miis in the Posting Plaza under the “Popular” category, you can now view 500 of the most popular Miis over the past two weeks instead of 50
When using the Mii search feature, the Miss Entry Number is retained on the Entry Number screen. If the Mii you’re searching for is not fond, re-entry of the number is no necessary, making i easier to modify your search.
A bunch of streamlined features is always good. Keep in mind this is a required update if you want to use the Check Mii Out Channel. You have to download the update from the Wii Shop Channel. Don’t worry, all of your favorites will remain in-tact after the update.
I have seriously spent the past couple days cycling through a countless number of Mii’s on the ‘Check Mii Out Channel’. ‘Why’ you might ask? Why would someone spend several hours looking at the intangible creations of others when that person themselves have created something as good if not better? The answer: to attempt to find that creation so that it I can vote for it. It makes sense doesn’t it? I created them. And of course having created these ‘Mii’s’ I obviously would think that it was good enough to win. Or at least come close or something.
But no. Here I sit in front of my HDTV pressing the ‘A’ button repeatedly. What fun.
Yesterday you may have seen your Wii blinking blue, letting you know of a new message you received. This message was to tell you that Nintendo has released the Check Mii Out channel. I grabbed it and was very underwhelmed. There really isn’t much there to do, except maybe find a couple cool new Mii’s. I grabbed a Walter Sobchak Mii (from The Big Lebowski) for good times sake.
If you want to see what the channel is like, check out the video.
EA is holding a Blogger’s Day event later this week for MySims for the Wii. Our very own taz8080 will be in attendance to cover the event as it happens. Make sure to check back Thursday and Friday as taz gets the scoop on the game and talks with developers over at the EA campus.
If you don’t know about MySims, it’s a Sims game for the Wii with a Nintendo flare. The game has a distinct look to match the Mii style Nintendo has created. You get to create your own Sim, design your own stuff, build and customize an entire town, and shape the community you live in, all utilizing the Wii motion controls.
Nintendo today announced Excite Truck 2 for the Wii via press release.
The new title will feature online multiplayer with up to 6 friends, all with their Mii’s displayed. Unfortunately, friend codes will still be used. There will also be a few new environments, including a couple tracks on the Moon.
Nintendo doesn’t mind throwing a jab at the competition here and there. Especially when it’s Sony. Hell, everyone likes to take jabs at Sony. You’re not cool if you don’t. They weighed in on Sony’s new Home service for the PS3, basically saying Sony stole their Mii idea and ran with it. Not too hard to believe, give the track record, and the fact that Home seems striking like Second Life.
When asked of the company’s thoughts on Sony’s online plans, Nintendo told CVG: “This is an example of Sony’s “Mii-too” approach. But as Mr. Miyamoto states, Nintendo years ago considered and rejected the type of approach Sony is now taking”, presumably referring to creating a virtual online world.
So… yeah. You really can’t fault Nintendo here. They pretty might hit the nail on the head. Sony has been basically copying things already on the market for the PS3. However, I do think the Home service on PS3 will end up being very good. It gives PS3 owners some hope that there’s life in the system, and there’s a reason to own one (other than a low priced BluRay player).
At Shigeru Miyamoto’s Nintendo keynote today for GDC, he announced a new Channel coming to the Wii. No longer will you be burdened down by telling people how cool your Mii’s are. Now you can participate in an online popularity contest with your Mii’s. You’ll be able to send your Mii’s in to be judged by people all over the world.
In case you didn’t get picked on enough in middle school, you can now get picked on for your digital self in the online realm. This should be fun.
