Metal Gear Online Tourney

Konami has announced if you actually play Metal Gear Online, and I’m not sure if there are many of you that do, they are hosting a 6 on 6 tournament.  It’s the “Official European Championship 2010″ run by my-liga.com inviting you and 5 friends to compete for a series of prizes such as Astro Audio Systems, Astro Gaming Backpack and other goodies from Astro Gaming. If you are in Europe, playing Metal Gear Online, and have 5 other friends who are playing MGO then you are a minority of a minority and you can register here http://mgo4euro.my-liga.com/. If you are anyone else then you have read too much and am I sorry for you. Competition kicks off on the 26th of February at 7pm UTC, whenever that is.

Konami Trying to Save MGO with Bonus Material for New Users

Anyone who has not played Metal Gear Online yet, this is for you. The rest of us don’t get shit. Anyone who buys the game or already has MGS4 and has not played the MGO part yet can get free in game credits and special in game content by playing before February 16th. Here are the details:

The exclusive Welcome Rookie Campaign is only open to players who have not previously installed and registered the retail version of Metal Gear Online on their PLAYSTATION 3 entertainment system. Some of the game items that can be purchased from the MGO shop are only available to those who have purchased the Metal Gear Online Expansion Packs. For more information please visit: http://www.konami.jp/metal/mgo/.

Fans who have never played Metal Gear Online have the opportunity to download a free version now thru January 29th. The free demo, along with a free Metal Gear Solid 4 demo, are available on the PlayStation Network.

The Welcome Rookie Campaign will be available to new registered members from December 24, 2008 thru Feb 16th, 2009. Prize distribution will occur after February 17th. The Metal Gear Online free demo service can be downloaded now thru January 29th on the PlayStation Network.

Since the MGO portion is repetitive, boring, usually broken, and costs money when you have to buy the expansion packs, it is no wonder so many gamers barely play it. I like the idea of “bribing” gamers to give it a shot, but I would not count on MGO as the multiplayer game to play in the next few months as we all wait for Killzone 2.

Kojima, You Had Me at Metal Gear, and Lost Me at Online

I don’t want to piss off any Metal Gear Online fans, in fact I wanted to be one.  I mean, I really, really wanted to be one, but I’m not, I’m so not.  And having recently read about Hideo Kojima’s revelation of disappointment at the number of people playing MGO, I felt maybe it’s not just me.

There are a lot of things about the game I could nit pick to death about game play and certain elements of the game (being trapped by porn has to be one of the most annoying things in all of gaming), but to each his own and everything I hate may be something that someone else loves or I just don’t get.  But, to me, there is one painful and almost inexplicable omission to MGO.

Second Metal Gear Online Expansion Pack is Coming

I don’t know if anyone out there is still playing Metal Gear Online, but if they are, a new expansion pack is coming. MGO has been broken for much of the past few months and I really can’t see anyone buying this right now, but word is that it is not free. It seems like a great expansion, I just can’t rationale sinking more money into a game with this many issues. Here is what will be coming along with the MEME expansion.

  • 3 New Maps
  • Silo Sunset – One of the most popular stages in the handheld Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops has been renewed for the world of Metal Gear Online.
  • Forest Firefight – Taken from Metal Gear Solid 3, this dense jungle gives players a new tense atmosphere with plenty of camouflage options.
  • Winter Warehouse – An original stage created for Metal Gear Online, players will have to search for suitable cover, in and around, this dilapidated factory blanketed in snow.
  • 2 New Special Characters
  • Liquid Ocelot and Mei Ling
  • Additional Rules and Settings – These can be selected without purchasing the second expansion pack
  • Avatar Parts – Players can adorn their avatar with new accessories.

Metal Gear Online Servers Updated

If you’re still playing Metal Gear Online after all the debacles it’s faced (I’m not), you may be excited to know that Konami has done some server updates. The updates were made in conjunction with the PlayStation Network downtime from the other day. Here’s what’s new:

1)Players will gain 5 reward points when they have finished a round in the automatching lobbies “SNAKE:EX”, “LIQUID:EX” and “SOLIDUS:EX”.

*The lobbies “SNAKE:EX”, “LIQUID:EX” and “SOLIDUS:EX” are only available for users who have bought the “MGO GENE EXPANSION”.

2)A new Survival Lobby “MK2″ has been added.

There you have it. Most of the changes only apply if you bought the MGO Gene Expansion. After all the problems surrounding the Gene Expansion pack, I haven’t felt like putting in a bunch of time with the game. There’s plenty other great online titles to play. What about you, our dear readers? Are you happy about the updates Konami is doing to their servers?

Metal Gear Online Download Pack Coming Soon

mgo.jpg

The word on the internets, i.e. Google translator is that on 7/17, Japan will get the first DLC for MGO. Here is what they are supposed to receive:

- Johnny and Meryl will be added.
- Now able to make Female Characters.
- 3 new stages including Shadow Moses, Mei Ling’s Ship, and MGS1 Heliport.
- Official Survival Mode added.

Also starting 7/4, two new rules will be added:

-Team Scanning (Teams will split into Sneaking and Defending, Sneaking team will be able to use Stealth ability)
-Head-shot Only Kills (Optional Rule)

The pack will be 1200 Yen and you can add a character slot with the pack for 1500 Yen.  How much is a Yen? I guess it depends on the ratio of leprachauns to unicorns. Hopefully we will be seeing this stateside soon enough.
