Being an avid gamer and someone who wholeheartedly respects and supports blogs (we happen to be one), I think this video is done very well. The video discusses the current affair between video gamers and blogs because of their constant need to be up to date. You get a view from traditional magazines (GamePro) to very well known blog sites (Destructoid) to even Major Nelson (Xbox Live Programming Director). I have to say that the founder of Destructoid is right on and I believe that there is a lot of room for good blog sites and personalized reviews and commentary.
The print media is at a rapid decline in my eyes because they just can’t keep up with the day to day occurrences in the industry. There is a ton of news that is evolving on a daily basis and by the time the print media hits the store shelves or arrives to your home, you have probably heard in far greater detail about everything in the magazine already. Best quote of the video: “Print media is dead.”
The gentleman from GamePro says that blogs are more personal and emphasize on opinions. I agree, but he goes on to say that “there is a limit to what blogs can do. Blogs don’t do well at hardcore clinical journalism.” Who the hell wants to read clinical reviews? I would rather read something that has a person’s soul in it and is riddled with “flippant” comments, because it is real and not a contrived formula.
There is always an undertone of blogs lacking journalistic integrity or skills, but I have to disagree. Blogs bring you unbiased news and opinions with no filters, for the most part, and provide gamers what they really want to read. With the growth in online capabilities and mobile phones, I can see things like print video game magazines fading away into the horizon and more blogs being taken seriously.
Hit the jump to see the video. What do you think, blog or print media? The classics or what we bring you on a daily basis?
Typically I like to pick up print publications to see what other writers and editors view of the video gaming world are in contrast to our own and our friends. I admit that the Official Xbox Magazine is one of those publications I have a subscription to and typically enjoy but recently one of my favorite things in the publication, the demo discs, has been frustrating me to no avail.
