If you didn’t get in on the MAG Beta by other means, today is the day. The game’s Open Beta starts today and runs through January 10th. Strap in for some downloads if you haven’t done so already. I’ll let Jeremy Dunham, Senior Community Manager at Zipper Interactive, explain the process.
Log on to the PlayStation Store, Select “View All By Title -> M Titles -> MAG” and download the MAG Beta file like you would any other freely-available PSN video or demo (298 MB)
Launch the MAG Beta program from your XMB to download a special patch that will restart MAG once the update has been received (another 37 MB)
After the reboot, the Beta will reconnect and download the actual game data so that you can play (1.8 GB – 2.3 GB depending on your region)
Add all that up and you’ve got a lot of time for downloads. I’ll probably hop on and check the game out now that there will be more people playing. While I think it’ll be fun, I don’t think it’s going to really take my time away for MW2 in the online shooter realm.
For anyone getting impatient over the chance to actually see Team Zipper’s so called Massive Action Game in action, you’ll just have to keep waiting a bit more. Sony announced on their official blog that MAG will release on January 26th, and that there will also be news on a public beta soon.
I’m personally rather excited for MAG. The game features 256 player mayhem, persistent character stats, and a number of other things that make me think it will be like a larger scale Battlefield 2142, which is awesome since I’ve played Battlefield to death. I’m curious to see how well it will end up running; apparently the game servers sport some kind of new architecture that should help alleviate the common lag and response issues that would undoubtedly plague a game of this scale. For a gamer like myself who usually prefers shooters on the PC, I’m willing to give MAG a shot due to what Zipper is promising, although I’ll probably end up getting destroyed by anyone who plays shooters on a console regularly.
Sony unveiled the premier gameplay trailer for MAG (Massive Action Game). I said it last year, I’ll say it again: 256 players is entirely too many. Things get hectic enough when you hit 32 players in a match. Imagine how fast you’re going to die when there’s hundreds of enemies firing around your spawn point in all directions. While it’s a huge feat to make this happen, I don’t think it’s going to be all that much fun. Just my opinion, what do you think?
