Demo Impressions: Lost Planet 2

Lost Planet 2 Screen

Lost Planet was a surprise hit on the 360 before making its way to the PC and the PS3. An early title in the life cycle of the Xbox 360, Capcom gave us a different take on 3rd person shooters. The game has you killing strange monsters, but you must retrieve their thermal energy to stay alive on the planet which was cold as balls. This concept pitted you against a veritable death clock, which was balanced and difficult at the same time. The story made less sense than ordering a Diet Coke at Wendy’s, but playing as both human and as a Mech (they call them VS suits) was a fun ride. Enough stalling, how is the follow up demo?

E309: Hands on with Lost Planet 2

It's going to give you cavities. It's that sweet.

I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t a huge fan of the first Lost Planet. The gameplay mechanics just doesn’t suit my playing style all that well. When Capcom announced the sequel, I didn’t get very excited, even though I’m a huge fan of co-op gameplay. After getting some hands on time with the game at Capcom’s booth, my mind has been changed on the series.

Lost Planet 2 Trailers Don’t Excite Me

For me, the first Lost Planet was just okay. It was like She Wolf.  The announcement of a sequel, even with co-op and no snow, didn’t really get me too excited. Capcom released a couple gameplay trailers from CAPTIVATE and, guess what? I’m still not excited. It’ll be a fairly solid shooter, but you really have to stand out in the shooter market these days. I don’t think Lost Planet 2 will have to chops to pull me in.

Is Lost Planet 2 Exclusive to the Xbox 360? Capcom Won’t Say

Lost Planet 2 Screen

Reports are flying that Lost Planet 2 is exclusive to the Xbox 360, it’s not exclusive, it’s coming to the Atari 2600 and Colecovision. Who knows anymore. Edge was tired of the drama, so they asked Capcom to come clean.

All we can say at this time is that we’ve announced Lost Planet 2 for the 360. That’s all I can say.

Capcom’s press release was carefully worded to say the game is “being developed for the Xbox 360”. As the company stated last September, all future big titles would go multiplatform. Hell, the MT Platform, the proprietary engine used for Lost Planet 2, was made to facilitate cross platform development. Whether this ends up as a timed exclusive or Microsoft just secured the announcement timeframe, who knows at this point. I have a strong feeling, though, that Lost Planet 2 will end up on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC at some point.
