Quake Live Expanding to Mac and Linux on Tuesday

Quake Live

Gaming for Mac users is getting better and better. Sure, we’re red headed step children in the gaming world, but at least we’re getting recognized. On Tuesday, things will get even better as Quake Live will be available for both Mac and Linux.

The announcement was made by id President Todd Hollenshead during the QuakeCon 2009 press conference and attendees will be able to play the new versions on the show floor. The rest of us will just have to wait a few days for the change to play the browser-based shooter. Free online gaming FTW.

Yellow Dog Linux Selling PS3 with Linux Pre-Installed

PS3 Horizontal

In case you aren’t keen to installing Linux yourself, Yellow Dog Linux will be selling 80GB PS3 systems with their newest v6.0 OS pre-installed.

Yellow Dog is one of the biggest Linux distros for the PS3. If you’re a fan of messing around with the terminal and trying your hand at Linux, you can either partition your hard drive and install it yourself or buy one direct from Yellow Dog.

Currently, there’s no reason for most gamers to install Linux on the PS3. There’s no good homebrew available yet and you have to reformat your hard drive, so you’ll need an external drive to back up all your saves, videos, demos, etc. When some good apps become available, it might be more worth while.

Streamings PC Games to PS3 Now Possible

Stream My Game

Ever wanted to play Crysis or even Halo 2 on your PS3? Now you can. Yes, you read that right. You can play Halo 2 on your PS3. StreamMyGame has released a client application to stream PC games over the LAN. You can play on PCs running Windows XP or Vista and also PS3 running Linux.

The free StreamMyGame Server enables PC games to be played remotely by converting the game’s video and audio into a Game Stream and sending it over a home network to a second computer where you can view and play the game with the free StreamMyGame Player. The second computer can be a PC, laptop, PS3 or Linux device. The game can be played on the second computer without any lag and the second computer does not need to have the game installed.

The player is available free from StreamMyGame, but you will have to pay to get HD resolutions for streaming. If you have a wireless network, it may not work that great either since it requires a decent amount of bandwidth. I currently don’t have Linux installed on my PS3, but if you do, try this out and let us know how it goes.

This almost unbelievable story came across the Loot Ninja desk today and we were absolutely stunned. According to this report, if you dare to type in the word Linux in your motto, you will be greeted by this message:

Someone please try this and let us know. Also, what other words did MS band besides the obvious?

Ubuntu Logo

The wonderful Ubuntu Foundation has released the newest version of their Linux operating system (v7.04, aka Feisty Fawn) for the PS3. If you’re new to Linux, Ubuntu is one of the top distributions. The ease of use coupled with the power of the distro as a desktop operating system has many flocking to it’s beauty.

You can get information on how to install Ubuntu for your PS3 from their official site. The download links can be found in that article as well.

I’m personally still waiting for better support for the PS3’s internal wireless card, card readers, and graphics chip before I install Linux on my PS3.
