I Want To Go To There!

By now we’ve all probably seen countless videos of the Left 4 Dead zombie apocalypse.  Hell, you have probably seen countless videos for Left 4 Dead 2 already!  If you haven’t, you’ve probably had more “important things” to do, or you have been living under a rock for the past year and a half.  There are modifications to the game maps for people to create, you can change the soundboard files to make the zombies sound different (please Google the Randy Savage soundboard hack), the funny commentary from fellow gamers as they are being used as pipe bombs.  It’s a pretty impressive library of gamer videos to peruse if you have a hundred hours to kill.

Every now and then a game video will rise to the top of the pile and be the cream of the crop.  For now, this is that video.  In the video, it combines the soothing sounds of Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World”, and the Left 4 Dead’s zombified horde.  Things do look better in slo-motion by the way, they just do.  It’s just something about the incredibly cheerful song set to one of the most dark, depressing looking, frustrating games on Expert out there that sets this apart.

Give These Left 4 Dead Mods a Try

Left 4 Dead mod

Left 4 Dead has become one of my favorite games. It’s funny because when the demo first came out, it scared the crap out of me. I remember falling down into the apartment in No Mercy and standing in a dark room with only a flashlight on the gun and ugly zombies staring me in the face having no idea what I was supposed to do. Let’s just say that I didn’t last 5 minutes before I turned the game off and left. A couple of months later a close friend was interested in playing so I gave it another try and I was hooked. Talking to friends while doing the campaign makes all the difference, at least to me. It raised my brave meter very high. After a month of playing all the campaigns many times, boredom set in as it was getting hard to choose a map, as we had played them all over and over.

Enter the world of L4D mods. At the urging of yet another friend, we downloaded and tried a couple of game map mods and I wanted to share them with you.  The first is called Death Aboard. One of the favorite mods going around, this campaign is really good and really long.

Left 4 Dead GOTY Edition

left-4-dead-promo

On Monday the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC, released a rating of 18 for Left 4 Dead…

My thought was “No shit assholes where the hell have you been?”  Upon closer inspection it was revealed to me they rated Left 4 Dead back in October 2008.   So they didn’t drop the ball on this one… I then put on my glasses and saw it was Left 4 Dead Game of the Year Edition.  Ahh!!! I’ve been staring at computer monitors for too long today.

So the real story here is expect a Left 4 Dead Game of the Year Edition in the near future.  If you look at the time difference between when L4D was originally rated by the BBFC and when it was released you can expect almost a two month wait for GOTY.

No word on what new features the GOTY Edition will bring.  To be honest I can’t see clearly enough to find out right now, so I will have to get back to you on that one.  Pending what the pack in I may pick this one up finally.

L4D DLC = Free, Valve FTW

Left 4 Dead Screen

Acronyms all over the place here, but it’s well worth it. Valve announced that upcoming the upcoming Survival Pack for Left 4 Dead will be completely FREE on both the Xbox 360 and PC. If you just wet your pants, I’ll let you change.

Ok, now that your pants are dry, it’s time to hear what’s inside. The free DLC will include a new multiplayer game mode, Survival, as well as two complete campaigns for Versus Mode (Death Toll and Dead Air).

I’ve gotten away from L4D recently with other games calling my name, but this DLC will certainly bring me back. What about you? I don’t want to hear any excuses, it’s free.

Left 4 Dead Hacked on Xbox 360, Bans Incoming

I’m saying this before anything else: if you try this, you will get your Xbox 360, Live Account, and possibly your IP banned from Live. Write that down. Now, with that out of the way, some enterprising hackers have figured out a way to put a save file on your Xbox 360 to give all kinds of goodies in Left 4 Dead.

While some of this stuff is cool, there have been reports of people using the infinite health and ammo cheats online, making the experience pretty crappy. I have a strong feeling that MS and Valve are looking heavily into this and bans will be coming sooner than later.

Valve issued a press release this afternoon stating that they’ve made a server-side fix to prevent users from using this cheat tool online. They’ve fixed all the dedicated servers, but people who are connecting user-to-user will be affected until a game patch is released in the next couple days. Hang in there.

Review: Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)

It’s amazing to me how simple some games appear to be, but are filled with so much enjoyment that I want to play the game all day; Left 4 Dead is one of these few games.  On the surface the game seems like another zombie shooter where you run around and attempt not to die.  However, when you look deeper… well that’s really all it is.  But it’s not the overall idea of the game, the originality of the game, or the streamlined effects of the game; it’s how the game as a whole is actually played.  The co-op feature is what drives Left 4 Dead, and what, in my opinion, makes the game a home run.

The graphics aren’t anything too crazy; lots of zombies and dark maps, basic guns, lots of empty rooms.  The story is interesting because it’s not really a story, it’s supposed to be portrayed as a movie where you play the four characters.  The story is basic; survive from the beginning to your escape vessel; fun (thumbs up).  Further, there are four different stories, which you can play in any order, and they are each a little different, and a little harder than the others.  Now the graphics might not be anything to shake a stick at, but the music and sound effects, at times, are.  The game works very well with a surround sound system, and the music tones, and slight cries allow you to know which zombies are around you.  For instance, if a witch is nearby (and you do not want to mess with her), you can hear her crying, and figure out which direction she is in, therefore which direction you should go.  Each of the special infected characters has a distinct sound, or music, which allows you to prepare and watch out for them.
