In case you live in a bubble, there was chaos yesterday as Toys R Us prematurely sold BioShock in many of their US stores. Combine that with a commercial that also ran prematurely saying the game was available, and the intarwebs went into a tizzy. Rest assured, this was all user error. BioShock has not yet been released.
2K had to take some time and wrap their heads around what happened before releasing a statement.
It recently came to 2K Games’ attention that one of our retail partners prematurely sold some copies of BioShock prior to the game’s official launch date. Retailers are typically shipped product in advance to ensure they can meet launch day demand on street-dated product. As a result, a few people were able to purchase the game early. Additionally, a TV advertisement for BioShock prematurely ran that incorrectly indicated that the game was available for purchase. 2K Games has reached out to our retail partners and is maintaining the street date of August 21st in North America and August 24th in Europe, when BioShock will be available at retailers. 2K Games is appreciative of the gamer excitement and critical acclaim leading up to the title’s launch.
Yep, Toys R Us is gonna get jacked up. Word on the street is it’s going to cost them $5000 per unit sold before the street date of August 21st in the US. That’s gonna add up pretty quick.
So, with all the hubbub, did any of you get a copy of BioShock early?
If you weren’t lucky enough to go to Times Square for the Madden launch, here’s your chance to see Ozzy Osbourne rocking out at the event.
What really strikes me about this video is the fact that Xbox 360 is plastered EVERYWHERE with the EA logo. It’s almost like PS3 and Wii don’t exist. Peter Moore is sure to make that relationship even stronger. No wonder the Xbox 360 version is superior… Can anyone say payola?
So during what could have been the worst show I’ve ever seen, called The Kill Point on Spike TV, gamers got a new glimpse at BioShock for the Xbox 360 and PC.
More importantly, Geoff Keighley threw up some exclusive announcement for all of us. And guess what? Fire up your Xbox 360 (sorry PC users, no love for you) and grab a demo for the game, which looks amazing. The demo weighs in at 1.3GB and should take forever to download with the amount of people that will be hammering the Xbox Live servers.
The demo is out now, and the game drops on August 21st.
Sony sent out a press release to let us know the 80GB PS3 is now available at retailers nationwide in the US. So if you’ve been waiting for that extra 20GB and a bundled copy of Motorstorm, head on down to your gaming retailer of choice and pick one of these bad boys up.
The 60GB model is available until stock runs out, which Sony expects will be later this year. Remember, the 60GB version in the US has the Emotion Engine built in for backwards compatibility, where the 80GB version will use software for playing your PS1 and PS2 games.
EA Games sent out a press release today letting us know their knew action shooter, Army of Two, will be hitting store shelves on November 15, 2007 in the US and Europe. The game will be available for PS3 and Xbox 360.
ARMY OF TWO will captivate gamers with a politically charged storyline, centering on the impact and ethical issues of Private Military Corporations. EA Montreal has also enlisted world renowned composer, Trevor Morris, to bring all aspects of the storyline and epic two-man gameplay to life through a powerful soundtrack. Morris has worked on numerous Hollywood blockbuster titles including Black Hawk Down, Bad Boys II, The Last Samurai and Pirates of the Caribbean 1 and 2.
All the trailers so far have been extremely entertaining. I hope EA keeps the gameplay in line while having that humorous element as well.
One of the reasons Sony stated for releasing the 80GB PS3 is to add more room for people to download high definition movies and TV shows. We all knew something of the sort was coming, but I expected a big announcement, not just a short fleeting line in a press release.
However you look at it, this could be even better than the Video Marketplace on the Xbox 360, as Sony owns and controls a large portion of Hollywood movie studios. The library Sony could offer is enormous, and it would almost make the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 download services another format war similar to Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD.
Expect more details, with launch date, coming this Wednesday at Sony’s E3 press event. Thankfully, this will have to signify a re-haul of the PlayStation Store, which will no doubt make it easier to navigate.
A possible killer app is on the way for PS3 fans and it should be released right around the time Halo 3 drops on us reports gameplanets. This quote was taken directly from Power Unlimited magazine when asked when the game should hit the shelves:
Expectations for the PlayStation 3 premier shooter are high, and Sony aims to release Killzone 2 during September. In an upcoming GamePro issue, sources close to Sony claim that development on Killzone 2 is going extremely well and the game should hit stores in September right before the holiday season. One GamePro editor wrote, that in comparison with Halo 3 and other shooters on both the 360 and PS3, Killzone 2 will blow away any console shooter to date. We will be curious to see how this develops – stay tuned.
FPS shooter wars? Wasn’t this foretold in a Billy Joel song?
It’s been 7 months now since the Wii launched in the USA, and you still can’t walk into a store and get one. No console ever has gone this long in this scenario.
So what’s the deal? Is the demand really that high? Or is Nintendo still not pushing enough consoles to the marketplace? I’m thinking it’s somewhere in between. Whatever the case, Nintendo needs to ramp up production to fill the supply chains. If the demand really is still that high, they need to provide for everyone who wants one. People aren’t going to wait forever.
Just in case 60GB isn’t enough for you, and you don’t have the stones to upgrade the hard drive yourself (trust me, it’s insanely easy and doesn’t cost that much to get a 120GB 2.5″ HDD), you’ll now be in luck with Sony Computer Entertainment Korea confirming the 80GB model.
Not only do we have box shots showing the 80GB size, but now we have the official SCEK website showing the specs in a few places. According the the spec, the 80GB model will sell for KRW 518,000 (USD 557 / EUR 412 / GBP 232) and will hit the shops on June 16. Here’s the kicker: the 80GB model will be the only one available in South Korea as there are no plans to launch the 20GB or 60GB versions there.
