Konami Exec Fails at Her Own Game

This lady is a Senior Product Manager, but has some of the worst microphone skills I have ever seen. She starts her talk by calling the crowd “lame”, that should get everyone into it. She also tells the crowd that they have drums set up for them to “bang on” right after she said the game was realistic. Overall this lady needs to be booted from public speaking and never allowed to play a video game in front of a crowd.

Metal Gear Online Expansion Release Botched

mgo.jpg

Oh, Konami. You just can’t seem to get the online right with Metal Gear, can you? First we had all the issues with the Konami ID, then only getting one character, and now the Gene Expansion just released is causing major troubles.

The MGO Shop and new Reward Shop are both up and down (mostly down) with some players reporting having purchased the Gene Expansion but not receiving anything. Seriously, why can’t this all be tied into the PSN? Have everything on the PlayStation Store, not in some web page shop you have to access with the PS3 Browser.

To top it all off, Konami is blocking random strings of IP addresses from accessing the shops and even the game. Most people I’ve spoken with have had major trouble playing MGO over the past few days. If things like this keep happening, I’d expect people to stop playing Metal Gear Online completely. Why go through all the hassle when there are online games just as good that work easier?

Metal Gear Issues with 60GB PS3?

Metal Gear Online Screen

According to a forum poster over at MaxConsole, there’s apparently some issue installing Metal Gear Online to the hard drive of the 60GB PS3. I have the 60GB and I didn’t have any issue whatsoever, so take this with a grain of salt.

I called up Konami, and they said that this is a known issue with the 60GB PS3 and they are currently in an information gathering stage. Their advice was to either wait for a fix from them or return the game and try and get a working copy.

We’ve tried to reach Konami for comment, but requests were not returned by press time. Are you having any trouble with MGS4? My guess is no.

Metal Gear Database Coming Today

MGS4 Database

Do you love the Metal Gear storyline as much as we do? I haven’t been able to get enough to Solid Snake and his escapades since the early days on the NES. There’s a lot of material there and you can easily get confused. So Konami is stepping up and releasing the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Database.

The MGS4 Database is a free, downloadable interactive application that contains the official knowledge base of everything that is Metal Gear, reaching all the way back to the very beginning of the franchise. Including complete storylines, character profiles, relationship diagrams, and much more! The MGS4 database is a great way to catch up for someone new to Metal Gear, as well as a useful resource for any veteran of the series, with complete official details on every aspect of the intricate Metal gear lore.

Very, very cool. I’m definitely looking forward to playing around in this thing. A cool feature is that any spoilers from MGS4 will be “blacked out” until you beat the game (detected from your game save). Kudos Konami, especially with this being free.

Review: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

MGS4 SS

After lengthy delays and much anticipation, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is finally here. The last game of Solid Snake’s story arc is more epic and intense than any other Metal Gear game to date. Combining entirely new gameplay elements with an amazing storyline, this is the Hideo Kojima’s best work to date.

What else can you say about the graphical presentation in Metal Gear Solid 4 other than the game is drop dead gorgeous. In what could be one of the best looking games to date on any system, every element has been meticulously detailed. When looking at Snake, other characters, or any environment, Kojima managed to pack more polygons into MGS4 than you can shake a stick at. With the game’s camera feature, you can take in-game screenshots that can be exported to your PC via a memory stick to savor forever. Guns of the Patriots has sound just as beautiful as the graphics. From the terrific script and voice acting to the wonderful score that really sets the mood, you’re going to want to turn the volume up on your surround sound system.

Metal Gear Online - Bad for Multiple Users

MGS4 SS

Do you have more than one person using your PS3? Do you each have your own PSN name and account on the system? You might be a bit upset to hear that Konami is exploiting these users by charging you to create multiple characters for Metal Gear Online.

You get one free character per PS3 and can purchase an additional 3 characters for $6.99. That’s a bit much, in my opinion. Why even have this limit? No other game does anything like this either offline or online. If you have your own system profile and your own PSN name, that should be enough. There should be no penalty to having multiple users of a PS3 in the same house. That’s essentially what this is, a penalty for those people.

So don’t waste your time with the ridiculous Konami ID creation for a second user. If you aren’t ready to shell out even more money than you just spent on the game, you’re stuck with one online character for everyone in your house to use. Bad move, Konami. Bad move.

[Update] For anyone disagreeing that you can have multiple characters per system, check out screenshots stating you can’t here. I also created a new PS3 user account and PSN name as well as a new Konami ID to test this.

EGM Delays MGS4 Review Due to Crazy Konami Restrictions

MGS4 SS

Big ups to EGM and 1up for sticking to their guns. Apparently, Konami has some crazy insane restrictions behind the review for Metal Gear Solid 4. Some of the things they forbid early reviewers from discussing include the game’s 4.6GB install and the length of the in-game cutscenes. No one knows for sure what else can’t be talked about and we don’t have our review copies of the game yet (Konami, what’s the deal?). Direct from EGM:

Metal Gear Solid 4 will hit store shelves shortly after this issue of EGM lands in your hot little hands. And four EGM editors — Matt Leone, Jeremy Parish, Andrew Pfister, and Shane Bettenhausen — have already invested plenty of time in the game. So why don’t we have a full review in this issue? Simply put: We weren’t happy with the limitations Konami wanted to impose on our comments, and rather than publish compromised reviews in the interest of being the first to rate the game, we’d rather wait until next issue, where we can be completely open and thorough with our thoughts. In the meantime, our MGS4 vets sat down for an informal chat about the game (and remember — [once the limitations are lifted] you can find the full review on 1UP.com!).

This type of thing really hurts the review process. It’s already bad enough when you have to play a game for review with developers and PR people looking over your shoulder, but to restrict what you can and can’t say in a review? How are gamers supposed to really know what’s going on? No topic should be off limits in a review. If something sucks or gamers should know about it before buying, it’s a reviewer’s job to make sure everyone knows.

We stand behind EGM and their decision to wait on the review so they can publish everything that needs to be said. We won’t be running our review pre-release, so we won’t be restricted with what we can say. Not that we’d sacrifice our journalistic integrity anyway. We’ll always bring you the full truth that we feel about every game.

MGS4 Producers Interview

You’ve seen the trailers, you’ve played the online Beta, and now you get to hear directly from Ryan Payton and Ken Imaizumi, Producers on Metal Gear Solid 4. They discuss weapon customization, replayability, and the bonus content in the Limited Edition version of the game. Ch-check it out.

Silent Hill: Homecoming Konami Day Interview

Silent Hill has always brought the scary and this game seems no different. Slashing monsters leaves visible knife gauges on their bodies, which is prety freaking graphic if you ask me. The atmosphere continues to be dark and gloomy to help feed into the scary aspect of the game. Look for this one in September to scare brown stains into your boxers.

Metal Gear Online Beta is Over

Metal Gear Online

Well people, the Beta period for Metal Gear Online is over. After all the debacle with signing up, most people stopped playing with GTA was released. There were definitely a few bugs, but overall it was a fun experience.

Check out our impressions of how it all went down here. I’m hoping more game modes get added for the final release next month. Differentiating yourself from the competition is what’s needed in the online shooter market.
