Review: Killzone 2

Killzone 2 Screen 1

Many people skipped on the original Killzone on the PS2; the game was mediocre and didn’t garner much attention. The PSP follow-up, Killzone Liberation, suffered much of the same fate. Guerilla Games blew the doors off when they introduced Killzone 2 and the hype train rolled for over 3 years until the game’s release at the end of February. There aren’t too many games that can match the level of hype and expectation surrounding Killzone 2. What began with a CGI trailer at E3 2005 is now reality, and is pretty damn close, if not superior, to that original trailer. Killzone 2 is one of the best looking games we’ve ever seen, but how about the more important factor, the gameplay? Does it hold up? After spending plenty of time popping off Helghast helmets, the answer is a resounding yes.

Graphically, what no one thought possible is now happening on PS3 systems around the world. Just about every aspect of Killzone 2 is flat out beautiful, from the character models to the environments. Explosions look utterly amazing and the clouds of smoke that billow around blown up barrels and doors add to the overall ambiance of the game. Seeing a Helghast soldier’s red eyes coming at you through blinding smoke from a grenade completely immerses you in the experience. Trying to take cover behind a flimsy piece of metal or a wooden box only to have it blown away will certainly make you yell and run away to keep from dying. Even concrete pillars can be destroyed, so staying in one spot isn’t the best option. The only graphical issue I have with the game is the flamethrower; it just doesn’t look all that good streaming out at enemies. Once things are on fire, it looks terrific, it’s just that shooting fire at someone is a bit muddy.

New Killzone 2 TV Commercial

Sony is looking to show off the power of the PS3 and the Killzone 2 engine with their new “Bullet” trailer for the game. Everything is rendered real time in game and it’s damn pretty. You can grab this in HD on the PSN now, so go check it out in 1080p.

Killzone 2 Goes Gold

Guerrilla Games got cranking over there in the Netherlands and got Killzone 2 done a little early. The game has officially gone gold and will be on store shelves February 27th.

Since that’s a little over a month away, just sit back and relax and wait for one of the biggest titles of the year to hit your PS3. You could always preorder it and get the demo.

Maxim: 50 Cent Game Better Than Killzone 2 and Street Fighter

One of the best selling men’s magazines in the world has just released their review of 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand and they have rated it better than both Killzone 2 and SF IV.  Yeah, that just happened. Killzone 2 got 3.5 of 5 circles (they use circles instead of stars), SF IV received 3 of 5 and 50 Cent received 4 of 5. Since I have not played any of the games yet, I cannot honestly say that they are wrong, but really?  If this is true, expect Sony fanboys to be jumping from bridges everywhere.

Killzone 2 Press Kit Sells on Ebay

Some douchebag “journalist” decided to sell the Killzone 2 press kit he or she got from Sony Europe on Ebay. The kit sold yesterday for £400, or $589 in US dollars.

There’s two things to consider here. First, this person is going to get black-balled from quite a few gaming PR firms. Why the hell would you even attempt something like this? Second, I hope the person that dropped $589 for a fucking video game has a PS3 dev kit because this game code isn’t going to run on just any console. Going to suck getting that home and realized you can’t play it.

However you look it, selling early press builds (or any press builds) is a huge douche move. I have a feeling Sony is going to pursue whatever action they can to find out exactly who this is. Dumb ass.

Killzone 2 Demo Offered Only to Preorders Until February 26th

Follow this logic if you can. Killzone 2 can be preordered. Anyone who bought the game, bought as in already committed their money to it, will be able to test the game via the demo starting February 2nd. The rest of us have to wait. What? Yeah. Here is what Sony says:

Offering a playable demo to motivate preorders speaks to our confidence in the appeal of a game such as Killzone 2. We take this approach when we are convinced that the experience will cement a consumer’s interest in purchasing. Retailers will then merchandise those demos within their stores and online to maximize their visibility. Through this process, consumers are often times able to reserve their copy of the final game, which provides an incentive to purchase and helps seal the deal. We also offer demos on the PSN, which we have done in the past with great success, and will continue to make that available. Killzone 2, for example, will have a downloadable demo launch in North America the week that the game is launching, for consumers who prefer that option.

In summation, anyone who already bought the game can try it out, but whether they love it or hate it, they still own it. For those who might want to buy it, but would like to try a demo are shit outta luck until the day before release. This makes less sense than the Chewbacca defense.

Killzone 2 – Boss Battle Gameplay

Although I know the footage is not as clean as we would like, anyone not excited for Killzone 2 should have their pulse checked. It is funny though how a game with very little history of major success is shaping up to me a monster title for the PS3.

We can only hope this won’t be the next Haze. So far from the looks of it, it might be better than Resistance 2.
