Sony Reorganizing, How Does it Affect PlayStation?

Sony Logo

Sony recently announced some reorganization that will attempt to make the company even better. Sir Howard Stringer will becoming the company’s President along with hit current role of Chairman and CEO. The company will be breaking into two main business groups, the New Consumer Products Group (“the New CPG”) and the Networked Products & Services Group. The latter will include Sony Computer Entertainment, personal computers, new mobile products, and Sony Media Software and Services, “which develops a common service platform across Sony products.”

The Networked Products & Services Group will be headed up by none other than Kaz Hirai as the Executive Vice President of Sony Corporation as well as President of the new division.

So what does all this mean for the PlayStation brands? With a more unified structure, Sony should be able to focus more on the software that goes behind their hardware. They’ve always made quality products, but the software that runs them hasn’t been the best in the business. We could possibly see some nice interoperability between multiple Sony products and further innovation in the PS3, PSP, and beyond. Possibly better development tools to enhance game development for the platforms? Only time will tell, but I’m hoping for good things. Sony sure as hell needs it.

What The Eff… Is Wrong With the Wii?

Over the past couple weeks, I have begun to lose some slight respect for Sony and have since gained respect for Nintendo and the Wii.  As we all know by now, Kaz Hirai bashed Microsoft, and sincerely bashed the Wii stating, “It’s difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don’t look at their console as being competitors.”  I don’t care what kind of esoteric meaning or different ways you can read into this statement because it’s ridiculous.  Last time I checked, the Wii sold more systems that both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 combined and the DS outsells the PSP.  Business has nothing to do with who has the best product, because we can say all we want that the Wii isn’t the best system on the market but it sells head and shoulders above its competition.  How can a company whose sole purpose is to sell video games, consoles, and handhelds, not be considered competitors to companies who also are in the market to sell video games, handhelds and consoles?

TGS07: PlayStation Home Delayed

PS3 Home Beta Logo

Kaz Hirai announced during Sony’s press event at TGS that Home has been delayed until Spring 2008.

Apparantly, the developers wanted to further fine tune everything before unleashing the online meeting place on the world. Hopefully Sony will further extend the Beta before the final release next year.

TGS07: DualShock 3 Officially Confirmed

SIXAXIS Image

Kaz Hirai, master of the PlayStation World, let the cat out of the bag (finally). The rumble-enabled version of the SIXAXIS, now called the DualShock 3, will be making it’s way to a PS3 near you.

No pricing has been set as of yet, but expect the new controller to drop in Japan in November and hit the US and Europe in Spring 2008. Why the huge delay? Anyway, the controller is said to be slightly heavier, with no outward appearance changes other than the addition of the DualShock 3 logo on the controller.

I’m quite excited about this one. Going to have to replace my current SIXAXIS with a DualShock 3 to get my rumble back for PS3 games.
