NESynth: 8-Bit Greatness

NESynth Logo Screen

We’ve all sat there playing the classic Nintendo system and wanted to desperately mash up, modify, and create our own great 8-bit tunes coming out of the TV speakers.  Well, with the help of NESynth (an iPod touch/iPhone app) you will be able to do just that, create your own classic Nintendo-like music themes.

At first glance of the application, you see that the interface is just a very simple keyboard, with a few virtual knobs above that to change octave, waveform, and sound effect.  When you eventually dive deeper into the app, you’ll see just how versatile this little bad boy is.  Add in another keyboard on top of that, and you create awesome 8-bit power chords that make Eddie Van Halen run off into the sunset and give his game away for free.

Review: Face Fighter (iPhone)

Face Fighter iPhone Screen

Face Fighter is sort of like Mike Tyson’s Punch-out but super real. You have 4 different possible commands. You can punch with your left or right as well as kick. Your best weapon however will be the blocking move. If you block at the right time, your opponent is stunned and you can land a damaging combination to reduce their health or even get a knockdown. The game is from a first person’s view and gives you the feeling you are really smacking the shit out of someone.

The iPhone Game Sales Continue – Toki Tori Now $0.99

Toki Tori iPhone Sale Screen

If you haven’t played Toki Tori, go shell out the $0.99 entry fee right now to get the game for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Chillingo is joining the “let’s get huge sales numbers by selling for a dollar” crowd, following the likes of Peggle and Topple 2, among others.

Toki Tori is a puzzle/platformer with an enormous amount of content for the price. It was worth the price of admission at $4.99, but if you sleep on this at $0.99, someone should throw your iPhone in a river.

Review: Appy Newz (iPhone)

Appy Newz iPhone Screen

When the trailing “s” gets replaced with a “z”, you know things are gonna to get outta control. Now that I have that out of the way, I can tell you about Appy Newz, a pseudo-game where you get to create tabloid-style covers to zing your friends. There are plenty of backgrounds, poses, faces, and objects to choose from, but you can always add your own pictures to any of those elements to give near infinite customization possibilities.

Review: Top Gun (iPhone)

top gun 1

If you were even semi-conscious in the 80’s you know what Top Gun is. The best fighter plane movie ever made that features the most homoerotic game of volleyball ever played this side of Fire Island. That being said, Top Gun is an icon and there have been some great games based on it. We all remember the Nintendo version where landing the plane was almost as hard as landing a real plane. Now we get Top Gun on the iPhone, and let me tell you, it’s awesome. The game features the actual movie soundtrack. Kenny Loggins FTMFW. Highway to the Danger Zone. Check. Top Gun intro song. Check. Maverick and Iceman in the game. You bet your ass.

Topple 2 on Sale, Runs Like Poo

Topple 2 iPhone Screen

I really enjoyed the first Topple on the iPhone from ngmoco:), but Topple 2 runs like Crysis on a Commodore 64. It’s currently on sale for $0.99 at the App Store, so I snatched it up right away expecting to be entertained for quite a while. Unfortunately, after getting through the first challenge, I’m not going back until there’s an update. The game runs like it need a 5x faster processor.

The menus and the game all bring my iPhone 3G to a crawl. I’m sure it’s fine on the 3GS, but that’s no excuse for having the game run so slow.

So, buyer beware and stay away from Topple 2 for now, even though it’s on sale. I love ngmoco:) and they make some awesome iPhone games, but this one needs some more work. I’m sure the gameplay is solid, I just can’t actually play it properly.

Tiger Woods for iPhone On Sale, It’s Worth the Price

Tiger Woods PGA Tour iPhone Screen

Tiger Woods PGA Tour for the iPhone is now 30% off, so you can grab the game for $6.99 instead of its normal $9.99. If you haven’t bought this game yet and like golf, go grab this one now. No, I mean it, go now.

Most of you know my affection for golf and golf games. I’ve been playing Tiger Woods on my iPhone the past week and absolutely love it. It’s easily the best golf game I’ve played on the iPhone (surpassing my previous favorite, Let’s Golf!). The courses, PGA Tour mode, and the amount of players to choose from are all amazing for the price. If you immediately want to play the 18th at Pebble Beach or the the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, you can.

I haven’t had this much fun with a portable golf game since the first Tiger Woods game on the PSP. You can play with up to 4 people by passing your iPhone around, which is a nice feature. The only thing missing is some form of online or ad-hoc multiplayer. Even without that, this game is awesome and worth every penny.

Review: DJ Mix Tour (iPhone)

DJ Mix Tour iPhone Screen

I’m a big fan of electronic/house/techno and turntablism. Most of my day is spent listening to the likes of DJ Shadow, RJD2, and Bad Boy Bill, amongst others. The upcoming DJ game craze has taken hold and DJ Mix Tour for the iPhone looks to capitalize on the momentum. The game falls a bit short, though.

Ninjas hold a special place in our hearts here, for obvious reasons. When games throw the word Ninja around in the name, it makes us take a look. Card Ninja for the iPhone takes a new take on matching games and the result is a good time.
