Impressions: Guitar Hero World Tour Instruments

Activision sent over a nice big box with the Guitar Hero World Tour bundle earlier this week. I’ve had a couple days to mess around with the game and instruments and and half impressed, half disappointed. More on that later with our full review, but for now, let me touch on the new instruments.

The new guitar both awesome and annoying. The fret buttons are the exact same thing as the GH3 guitar, so nothing big there. A slider bar has been added for solo sections, which is pretty cool actually. I’m not a bit fan of the lower buttons on the Rock Band guitar, but these actually work out pretty well. The biggest change and what makes me happy everytime I play is a dedicated Star Power activation button that sits right under your palm. If tilting the guitar always makes you break combo, this is your answer. So that’s the goods, but what about the bad? The strum bar has changed from previous Guitar Hero axes. It’s not thinner, longer, and mushier. Think of it as the Rock Band strum bar with an odd sounding click. The sound and feel of the strum bar have me debating every song if I want to pick up the GH3 guitar sitting in the corner. I’m still not sold.

Wii Music- Famicom

This game is just looking worse and worse! Wii Music is making a mockery of itself by making probably the stupidest things into instruments, the latest bit of stupidity is the Famicom? Since when does the Japanese Famicom constitute as an instrument? Why is the Mii holding the Famicom and blowing into it? We can only hope that this flops something fierce, but something tells me people will buy this piece of crud.

Free Guitars with Guitar Hero World Tour?

Free guitars with your pre-order of Guitar Hero is a pretty sweet deal. To be more exact it is a free bass guitar for UK gamers with your pre-order and I can only imagine that this is while supplies last and not for everyone that pre-orders.

Activision UK has announced “the biggest pre-order incentive the industry has ever seen” as it gears up for November’s anticipated release of Guitar Hero World Tour.

Gamers who pre-order the ‘super bundle’ – containing the game, drum kit, guitar and microphone – will receive a free Guitar Hero bass guitar, which currently retails for approximately £50.

An interesting concept to help boost sales of Guitar Hero especially since they got beat to the market by Rock Band 2 by a few weeks. Unfortunately this is only slated for the UK so far and I do not know how helpful this is for people that already own a bunch of instruments, how many extra guitars will you need before you can’t sit in your living room anymore?

Piecing Together a Rock Band 2 Experience

As someone who purchased the PS3 version of the original Rock Band and since I could not wait to grab the new PS3 version of Rock Band 2 in a few weeks, I picked up a copy for the Xbox 360. Armed with my original Guitar Hero II guitar and my PS3 Rock Band microphone I endeavored to play some Rock Band 2. Here is my tale…

I dusted off my original Guitar Hero II guitar stickers and all that resides behind a couch and found out that it works perfectly fine with the game and allows me to play the lead guitar and bass with absolutely no problems. I then tried to get crafty and see if my PS3 instruments may work on my Xbox 360, I know it was wishful thinking but I had to try it.

Wii Music is announced

Wii
Wii Music is Nintendo’s answer to music sim games, it is an all out music experience where you can choose from up to 50 different instruments to play. Wii Music will not evaluate your performance, but instead allow you to create songs and music videos with four friends. Nintendo announced that 4 people can play together, but then showed five people playing together, not sure what kind of trickery is going here? Wii Music looks cute and even boasts that it will have lessons for you to learn how to play instruments, but looks like yet another gimmick.

Standalone Rock Band Instruments Coming Next Month

RockBand

If you’ve been clamoring to get your hands on some extra Rock Band instruments, your wait is nearly over. Harmonix announced that standalone rocking tools will be available starting in February.

The drum kit will be available for all systems on February 12th for $79.99. Guitar players will have to wait a bit longer until April 1st, when you’ll be able to spend $59.99 for a wireless Fender Strat. No official word on when the mic will be available on it’s own.

I still with Harmonix and Activision would get their crap together over letting instruments from their games intermingle. It would really help PlayStation owners who have both games.
