Metal Gear Issues with 60GB PS3?

Metal Gear Online Screen

According to a forum poster over at MaxConsole, there’s apparently some issue installing Metal Gear Online to the hard drive of the 60GB PS3. I have the 60GB and I didn’t have any issue whatsoever, so take this with a grain of salt.

I called up Konami, and they said that this is a known issue with the 60GB PS3 and they are currently in an information gathering stage. Their advice was to either wait for a fix from them or return the game and try and get a working copy.

We’ve tried to reach Konami for comment, but requests were not returned by press time. Are you having any trouble with MGS4? My guess is no.

The Bourne Conspiracy PS3 Requires 5GB Install

Bourne PS3 Install

When will it all end? PS3 hard drives are gonna be full everywhere soon. Sure you can upgrade your hard drive, but do developers need to make 5GB installs all the time? The latest to share the hard drive is The Bourne Conspiracy, which shipped to retailers today from Sierra.

You would figure with the amount of bitching going on about installs that developers would cut it back a bit. I guess not.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Holy Long Wait Time, Batman

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Screen

I got my copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the PS3 today. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this title for a while, as I’ve been a huge fan of the series and racing games in general. So when I put the game in my PS3, I was more than ready to race. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:

  • 9:24pm - Loaded the game, started the install process
  • 9:37pm - Install ended (13 minutes total, using 5349MB)
  • 9:38pm - Began downloading the game update
  • 9:42pm - Error occurred during download, had to start over
  • 9:44pm - Began downloading the game update… again
  • 9:51pm - Update finished, needed to hold the PS button to quit the game
  • 9:52pm - Restart game, going through menus
  • 9:53pm - Begin car shopping (you have to buy a car first with the 35k credits you have before you can race)
  • 10:01pm - Bought car after looking for a while for what I can afford (settled on Mazda RX-8)
  • 10:07pm - Finally finished first single player race (2:52 total race time)

So as you can see, if you get the Blu-Ray version of the game, it’s going to take you an absurd amount of time sitting there doing nothing waiting to actually play the game. Seriously, this is just ridiculous. It took 40 minutes before I was able to actually play the game.

Lost Planet PS3 Requires 5GB Install

Lost Planet Map Pack 2 - Image 1

The next in the line of Capcom games for the PS3 requiring a 20 minute, 5GB install is Lost Planet. PS3 Style got an advance copy (hey Capcom, where’s our advance copy?), and found that the game makes you sit for about 20 minutes while the game caches about 5GB of data to the hard drive, similar to Devil May Cry.

And that’s not even the kicker, as Lost Planet doesn’t have that nice back-story slideshow to keep you company while the game installs. Nope, you get a plain screen with a progress bar. Snazzy.

Now, I understand the BluRay drive reads slower than a 12x DVD, but it’s not that much slower. Is a 5GB install really needed? I’d love to see load time comparisons with and without the data install.
