Holy Jesus Batman. As we know, last year Activision told us the Guitar Hero franchise sold over $1 billion, and now Mike Griffith is telling us that Guitar Hero 3 (the single game) has sold $1 billion in North America. This is crazy for 2 reasons. One; it took three games in the franchise to sell the initial billion in 26 months and Guitar Hero 3 has sold its $1 billion in a little over 14 months. Secondly; it’s the first single video game to make over $1 billion dollars in North America alone, which is ridiculous.
During Mike Griffith’s Keynote he stated,
“Music has a history of evolving through technology and we are at the beginning of the latest chapter in that story.”
The Beginning? I can’t even imagine where Activision is going to take their next steps. It is true that the Guitar Hero franchise is a great game for everyone. Like the Wii, at times, the GH franchise encompasses everyone from hardcore gamers, to family-friendly gaming, older generation gamers, and young people. All around it’s the most available game to the overall public.
What do you get when you mix Through the Fire and Flames on Expert and a dude with entirely too much time on his hands? Of course, the answer is a MIDI drum mod that works with Guitar Hero so you can play the hardest song ever without an actual guitar. Did you think of something else? Watch this guy bang it out and thank the gaming gods that you don’t have this much free time. Seriously.
Master of Puppets might be one of the greatest heavy metal albums of the 1980’s. Then the Black Album set the tone for the entire decade of the 1990s. Then, well, Metallica was not as cool as they once were. Load and Reload were decent at best and St. Anger was by far their weakest studio album yet. There new release, Death Magnetic promises to get as metal as they once were. To help entice the middle of the road fan, you will be able to download 11 free GH III tracks. This is only on the Xbox 360 by the way, so half of you are more or less shit outta luck. No word yet on the track list, but we will have them for you when we get the heads up.
Just when you thought Guitar Hero III wasn’t going to get any more cool DLC, they drop it on you. Coming Thursday, we get three hard hitting tracks.
The pack will include the heavy lyrics of Flyleaf’s “Tina,” the heartfelt track “Carcinogen Crush” from hardcore-punk turned goth band, AFI, as well as a remix of Marilyn Manson’s grinding, fast-paced “Putting Holes In Happiness” by Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Hot shit. I’m all over this one. I haven’t played Guitar Hero III in a while, and this is definitely a reason to go back. Now I think it’s time to pick up a new GH3 guitar. My old wired one from Guitar Hero II has seen better days….
One of my favorite bands, Coldplay, will be gracing the DLC section of Guitar Hero 3 next week. No pricing has been announced, but I’d bet it will fall in line with previous GH3 DLC at 500 MS Points ($6.50) for the following three songs:
Violet Hill
Yellow
God Put a Smile on Your Face
Even though I do like me some Coldplay, I’m not sure if I’ll be picking this up. With tracks for Guitar Hero costing more than Rock Band, coupled with the fact that I haven’t touched Guitar Hero in months does not bode well for the game. We’ll see what happens, though.
Expect to get a ton of new GH3 content this summer. We just received a press release from Activision telling is that 5 new packs are to be released and the first two will be revealed. Fans of Motorhead and the Sex Pistols rejoice. Hit the jump for the official word.
Movie trivia: Which movie was this exchange from? Lemmy is the frontman for Motorhead in case you are under 30.
This isn’t a bot. He may not be human, but iamchris4life has completed Through the Fire and Flames on Expert with 100%. Seriously. Check out his insane full combo run and either laugh or cry, because you will never do this.
GH3 will release a free track which is from the God of war universe. The Song titled, “The End Begins” will be available via free download. Here are a free choice chords. The song is not nearly as iconic as the Halo Theme, but still rocks. Here’s hoping they keep doing these sorts of things. What songs do you guys think they should do next? I’m sure if we all came to a consensus, they would maybe hear what we had to say.
There will be a God of War themed track to be released for download on the PS3 version of Guitar Hero 3. The track will be free and ready for download on June 5. This may seem odd, but remember when Bungie made the Halo theme a free download. Could this mean that a GoW 3 announcement will be dropped on us soon? We friggin’ hope so. We’ll let you know again the day that it is available.
Just in time to start your St. Patty’s celebration early, the Dropkick Murphy’s track pack is now available for free on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
In case you forgot, the pack includes “Famous for Nothing”, “Flannigan’s Ball”, ” Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya”. All solid tracks from a great band. And hey, it’s free. You can’t ask for a better price.
I’m going to guess these will be available on the PlayStation Network later today with the weekly update.
