If you’re publishing an open-world crime game, you need to bring the A-game. Last year, GTA IV set the new standard for how things should be done. Now, EA brings The Godfather II to the table, the follow up to 2006’s original, where you work your way through the ranks of the Corleone family. This time around, you get to build up your family influence in Cuba, New York, and Miami as the story progresses. Sadly, though, the game just doesn’t provide enough fun to make you want to get all the way to the end.
No, not Don Mattingly, but it might involve baseball bats.
No, not Don Quixote, but there may be some insanity.
It’s a little bit of both worlds, it’s Don Mode for Godfather II, a free downloadable patch available the day the game is released, that will give players the Don Control multiplayer mode. You’ll have two players as opposing Don’s able to recruit other players and wage war on each other, with their single player in-game currency on the table. A few things that bug me about this are:
Why a patch on the first day of release?
Everyone will want to be playing as the Don.
But overall it sounds like a nice twist tying the multiplayer and single player campaign together and throwing a bit of strategy into open-world chaos. Press release is beyond the jump.
The first Godfather game was just okay. I played it for a while, but just couldn’t get into the game. At the time, I was too into GTA: San Andreas to hop into another sandbox style crime game. With The Godfather II, EA looks to have improved on some of the qualms I had with the original as well as add a few cool new features.
The biggest change to the game is the Don’s View, a 3D representation of the city that allows you to see what gangs or families have control are various areas. Tom Hagan, your consigliere, will walk you through expanding your family’s reach and aid in your power gains.
We had a lot of hands on time with EA’s upcoming titles at Comic Con, one of which was The Godfather II. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first game, but I think the sequel will have a better reception from gamers. We’ll have a full preview soon, but for now, check out what Jino Talens, one of the game’s PR reps, has to say.
Get ready to attempt to dominate the criminal underworld in GF II. The game does not seem to follow the main characters from the series, but may have them intermingle when the plot sees fit. Check out the latest trailer and get ready to run shit.
The Godfather II promises to expand on the original game where you must interact and command your crew to succeed. GF II is striving to be a bigger and more comprehensive mafia game that will expand the main story arc or create a new one. Not sure yet. The game looks decent, but these are early builds. Check it out.
The first Godfather game was largely successful because it had a lot to do with the first movie. The memorable characters were involved and you got to relive the movie, sort of. Godfather II seems to be a standalone title, where you get the generic “rise to power” story mechanic. I can’t say I’m too excited for this one.
