Review: Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Xbox 360, PS3)

Ghostbusters Screen

Growing up, I was a big fan of the Ghostbusters. I had Slimer sheets on my bed, which qualifies me for some sort of award, or at least a pat on the back. I’d always wished the team would get back together for a third movie, but it never came to pass. Now, that third movie has been incarnated as video game, which makes me tingle a bit inside. Mixing one of my favorite movie series with my favorite pastime should be a win-win scenario. Ghostbusters: The Video Game comes damn close to hitting it out of the park.

Don’t Cross the Streams – Ghostbusters Multiplayer Trailer

Co-op is all the rage. We talked about it in this week’s Battle of Wits and Ghostbusters is looking to deliver. Separate from the single player campaign, you’ll be able to take the helm as one of the four Ghostbusters and team up to whoop ass on some big ghosts. I’m glad to see they went co-op and not competitive, since it just doesn’t make sense in this game. I’m also happy to see they made it separate from the story, since I think it’s going to kick ass.

Europeans – Hope You Wanted Ghostbusters on PS3

Ghostbusters

Atari has struck a deal with Sony for the platform holder to publish Ghostbusters in Europe, making it a timed exclusive for the PS2 and PS3. The game will be released June 19th in the EU on Sony platforms. A PSP version will be available worldwide in August.

This move doesn’t affect North American gamers, who will see the game on every platform known to man June 16th.

While this helps Sony in Europe, it hurts gamers who were looking for the game on other platforms. Personally, I’m most excited for the Wii version of the game. If I was across the pond, I’d have to wait a while. Luckily, I’m not, so I can play whatever version I choose in June.

Alyssa Milano Starring as Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters Game

Ghostbusters

One of the big things Atari was touting to us at NY Comic Con this year about the upcoming Ghostbusters game was everyone from the movies lending their voice talents to the game. I guess their definition of “everyone” doesn’t match when the dictionary things. Signorney Weaver said no to reprising her role as Dana Barrett, so Alyssa Milano will be stepping in.

“Obviously, fans of the movie are going to miss Sigourney Weaver,” said Milano, who was offered the part of the game’s leading lady after Weaver declined to reprise her role as Dana Barrett. “I have so much respect for that character in the movie that I hope I do the position that she is in justice. I was just flattered to be asked to be part of ‘Ghostbusters’.”

You know, I’m not too upset here. While I don’t have first hand knowledge of the game’s story, I can’t imagine Dana Barrett being a big enough part for it to take me out of the experience. She’s been possessed and had her baby bring back an evil demon, so what else is left for her?

Who you gonna call? Even though I want to punch myself in the face for saying that, how can you not start off a Ghostbusters game preview without that classic line? Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about what you really care about, the game. Atari picked up the license for the Ghostbusters game and ran with it. What they spit out the end is somewhat impressive.

The biggest news is that the game is being fully written by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis, so you can fully expect a high level of comedic action. All of the original cast members are voicing their respective characters, which is huge for keeping the true to the films.

Interview: Ghostbusters: The Video Game

I heart Ghostbusters, always have. After the game was announced, I was a bit skeptical. Proton packs might not translate well to video games. We got some hands on and spoke with the game’s lead artist, Glen Gamble, at Comic Con. I think it could definitely be a winner. See what Glen has to say and check out our full preview soon.

Activision to Shit Can Ghostbusters and 50 Cent Games?

Ghostbusters Game Slimer Screen

There is no official word yet, but Activision left off quite a few games on their release list after E3. The following notable games were not present: Ghostbusters, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, Brutal Legend, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, World at Conflict: Soviet Assault, Zombie Wranglers, Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, as well as several Xbox Live Arcade titles.

We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing.” Additionally the company plans to “realign” staff at High Moon Studios and Radical Entertainment, while Massive Entertainment and Swordfish Studios are both under consideration for sale or closure.

People are reporting that these games were not mentioned because they have been axed. Not so. I am just reporting that something may be afoot. Will some of these games never see the light of day? Most likely. I doubt a 50 Cent game is going to make a ton of money and cost the studio much in reputation, but I was really looking forward to Ghostbusters. Bustin’ makes me feel good.
