Scientist Encourage Protein Folding Video Game

Fold It

A new protein folding game which is like a 3D version of Tetris, called Fold It, is now out for download. The game allows you to solve protein folding problems after a quick tutorial. People are even saying that this could help fight AIDS.

“I imagine that there’s a 12-year-old in Indonesia who can see all this in their head,” Baker said.

Okay. Hold the fuck on. I am a Micro and Molecular Biologist with 9 credits of Phd Biochemistry under my belt. I work for a major pharmaceutical company and specialize in Real Time Polymerase Chain Reactions and RNA/DNA Purification. Did that just make no sense to you. Probably not. Why? Protein folding is fucking complicated. Anyone who suffered through O-Chem, Q-Chem, Advanced Genetics, Advanced Micro, etc. knows what I’m talking about.

I would love for AIDS to be eradicated via a freeware puzzle game. Truth is, a quick tutorial is not going to replace 9 years of higher education from an Ivy League school. Here is the link. Give it a shot. See if you can solve in 10 minutes what 3 decades of research and billions of dollars could not.
