Dropkick Murphys are one of my favorite bands. Maybe it’s because I’m 75% Irish, my favorite holiday is St. Patty’s Day, and I’m a huge Notre Dame fan. Hell, I like them so much I used “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” as the entrance music for my wedding party.
You, too, will be able to enjoy Dropkick Murphys for free in a short while for Guitar Hero 3. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Activision will be dropping a three song track pack on everyone for no cost.
Straight from the band’s sixth album, The Meanest of Times, the Dropkick Murphys pack will include master recordings of “Famous for Nothing,” “(F)lannigan’s Ball” and “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya.”
I’m all over this like a fat kid on a cupcake. No word on the exact dates of availability and how long they’ll be available for free. We’ll keep you posted.

Hot off the heals of Sony’s PhyreEngine announcement, Insomniac is providing a free library of development tools, labeled Nocturnal Initiative.
“The Nocturnal initiative is designed to encourage greater communication and information sharing among the development community because it will ultimately enable us all to create better games at a lower development cost,” said Mike Acton, engine director, Insomniac Games. “And, in the end, it’s all about making great games.”
Essentially, Insomniac is giving other developers access to their source code in an effect to expedite and reduce the cost of game development, mainly on the PS3. This can only be good for gamers out there, as this new sharing of information at no cost will ultimately mean better games in your living room. Kudos to the industry players stepping up here!

In a strike of unusual generosity, EA has announced that the upcoming Battlefield series installment, Heroes will be issued as a free download. There seems to be no reason for this, but here is a statement from EA themselves:
“It is easy to pick up and play but with robust character customisation and a deep online meta-game, gamers can spend hours building up their characters and conquering the world”, says EA.
The game will most likely be funded by some in game advertising of some sort. The game will also have a more cartoonly feel than the prior games which strived for realism. No word on the specs for the game to be played, but we will keep you informed when the download is made available.

You read it right. The rainforest is being destroyed at such an alarming rate that there is now propaganda games to fight its destruction. Ok..
“The game presents a very serious issue in an interactive way so that players want to take action to stop the carve-up of the Congo rainforest,” said Helen Brownstone, Head of Fundraising and Communications at the Rainforest Foundation.
The Rainforest Foundation has created a freeware game that allows you to stop the logging of the Congolese rainforest. The same place that the Michael Crichton book, Congo took place in. Here is the link: Congo Jones. No word if the Chinese kid from Goonies will make a cameo.

Sent to Loot-Ninja via ‘nostars’:
I got mine in the mail (2 of them) on Tuesday (10/23/07).
The case definitely gives the Wiimote some much needed bulk, because those
damn things are too tiny in my opinion.
They put extra padding on the front, which is great in case of a collision
with an object like a laptop (sorry taz8080).
The back end has a cap over the connector slot, in case you’re not using the
nunchuck, the plug is protected from dust and whatnot.
My only problem with it is the sides, right around the middle of the
Wiimote. They left that area with rather thin rubber/silicone, so it’s not
snug there. I tried a few of the Wii sports games with it, and on hard
swings, it sometimes felt a little loose in the middle.
For a freebie, I give it 4/5.
If I had to pay for it, 3/5.
It is an interesting idea to add protection to your Wiimote and I htink i wll send out ot grab a few of these. And yes laptop + swinging Wiimote = no good. LOL

Well I was hearing good things about the new game ’skate’ from EA that just came out, so I decided to open it up and give it a spin and a card popped out with a note for a free download of a mobile version for my phone. It is actually really easy to get, you text “skate” to this number, 22123 and they message you back with the game, only hitch is that my phone is T-Mobil and they don’t support T-mobil. They do support Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, Virgin Mobile and alltel, I am just SOL! Check it out and let us know.
::Please note that all standard text messaging costs are applicable::

There’s some free stuff available today on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Sponsored by Best Buy, you can now grab a new Halo 3 theme and picture pack.
While the content is free, it won’t be up forever. So fire up your 360 and grab these before their gone. We know how much you love Halo, so I’m sure there’s some soiled underwear with this free content.
