Sony & EA Get Sacked by Jim Brown

Jim Brown

In what has to be a pretty bizarre lawsuit, EA and Sony are both looking at a lawsuit that former NFL player and current Hall of Famer, Jim Brown, has brought against them for using his likeness without his consent.

The character, part of the “Real Old School Teams and Players” series, is a muscular, African-American running back wearing the number 32 jersey who is featured in the game’s “All Brown’s Team,” Brown said in a complaint filed yesterday in state court in New York.

Brown, who wore number 32 for the Cleveland Browns, said in the complaint that he “never signed away any rights that would allow his likeness to be used.”

Looks like Jim Brown is not a fan of Madden after all, or EA or Sony. Jim Brown goes as far to say that them abusing his likeness actually devalues his overall worth.

Brown said Sony and Electronic Arts, maker of the “Madden” football games, have “unjustly enriched and have received and continue to hold ill-gotten gains,” diluting his trademark rights for his likeness and reducing its value.

In the lawsuit, Brown seeks unspecified damages for trademark infringement, unauthorized use of his likeness, trademark dilution and unfair business practices and competition. He also seeks a preliminary and permanent court order to stop the use of his likeness.

I think Jim is getting a bit bent around the axle but lets see how this ends up. Something tells me that old Jim does not have a leg to stand on since they will say that the jersey number and the character even remotely looking like him are just coincidences.

Madden 09
Our condolences to Brett Favre, no good can come of this announcement seeing the great running record of the Madden curse, but at least he is ready for retirement. Let’s see if the cover athlete trend continues with Madden, will we get a report of Brett Favre falling down the stairs and breaking his neck this year?

NCAA Football 2009 Debut Trailer

It’s not too early to think about football and we get a glimpse at the latest release in the NCAA Football library. The games have been good as of late, but it seems as if they have peaked. Graphics are good, gameplay is solid, but it just seems like a roster update and maybe a new mode here or there.

Madden 09 officially dated

Tom Coughlin
So it looks like the newest Madden will hits the streets August 12th in North America and will also bring in a collector’s edition as well. The collector’s edition is the 20th anniversary edition and is scheduled to include “full versions of both Madden NFL 09 and the all-new NFL Head Coach 09, exclusive classic Madden NFL gameplay, and an extensive library of exclusive bonus video content.”

Not sure if the anniversary edition sounds all that great unless you are a hardcore football simulation fan that want to get your hand’s on Head Coach? Not sure what they mean by exclusive Madden NFL gameplay, I wonder if they plan on including some of the original madden game son a separate disc?

NFL Tour - Tackling Gameplay

NFL Tour, previously NFL Street shows off some of it’s tackling gameplay, too bad it is far from impressive. The game looks much slower than the Street versions and a lot less fun. The tackles looked pretty lame and were more about wrestling the offensive player to the ground. Tour looks disappointing for any Street fans out there, it looks like in an effort to make it more politically correct they took the fun out of the game as well and made it look like Arena football.

Black College Football Xperience Announced

BCFx

I’m a bit confused by this one here. I think the football gaming market is fairly saturated, but who knows. In an effort to diversify, Nerjyzed Entertainment in bringing Black College Football Xperience to the PC this November.

BCFx is a sports game that captures the unique culture of the black college football experience, fusing advanced videogame design with music, and entertainment. Nerjyzed has secured an exclusive 5-year licensing agreement with three HBCU conferences including the SWAC, SIAC, and CIAA, several schools within the MEAC as well as independent HBCUs. The game features more than 40 teams, bands and mascots; interactive halftime shows; realistic stadiums; play-by-play commentary; and ten authentic Classics.

I think we all learned a long time ago that using an uppercase “X” to start a word automatically makes your game awesome.

NaturalMotion Tackling the Football Video Game Genre with Backbreaker

Backbreaker Screen

More competition for Madden has come up from NaturalMotion. Their new game, Backbreaker, looks to revolutionize how players interact on the field.

Using the Euphoria engine, every tackle is different and players move exactly how they would in the real world.

“Backbreaker is the first football game with truly interactive tackles. By utilizing our motion synthesis engine, euphoria, players will never make the same tackle twice, giving them an intensely unique experience every time they play the game,” said NaturalMotion CEO Torsten Reil. “Backbreaker puts players in the middle of the gridiron by providing a pure, realistic football experience only possible on next-generation consoles.”

Well, the sure have tackling down right. Now if they can get the rest of the game to play well, this very well may put some pressure on Madden to actually make some more progress in the game.

Madden 08 worth the purchase?

Madden BengalsOne of our editors brought you a full review of the new Madden 08 game for the Xbox 360 and for the most part it was very positive and he went as far as to call it “the best football game to ever hit next gen” but this editor has a bit of a different opinion. I see it as a solid game, but not worth the purchase as it has not evolved enough from it’s other iterations.

Proof that this Madden is still the same game is the fact that one of my buddies and I sat down for the first time without looking at one instruction manual and played a full game without losing a step. The only thing I had to ask about was what the speed burst was now, aside from that all of those extras in there (which there are a ton) are not that necessary. By these I mean the mismatch crap, the possesin catches, the icons for players and all of those other “upgrades” really don’t add value. It was funny because we played the 360 version and my buddy doesn’t even have a 360 and actually still plays Madden on the original Xbox, but he played just fine.
