Guitar Hero hits the DS

That’s right, have you ever gotten into a Guitar hero session and had to go out and cut it short, well worry no more because you can now rock out on the go with Guitar Hero On Tour for the Nintendo DS. This is a hit or miss idea, many people will love the fact they can now play Guitar Hero on the go, but there is one element that is missing… the guitar! It just isn’t the same to rock out with a DS in your hand than to rock out with a replica Fender. Also if you looks at the add on, there is a button missing, this version only uses 4 buttons, which will make the game a lot easier, that 5th button is always the one that gets me. What do you guys think?

Lego Guitar Hero Controller

Lego Guitar Hero controllerIf you are like me and are frustrated by a strum bar that does not work on your RockBand guitar what do you do… make one out of Lego of course. Well at least that’s what this guy did, David McNeely made a fully functional Guitar Hero controller out of the guts of an old controller and a few Lego pieces.

Aside from being very creative and looking pretty damn cool, it also is fully functional! Unfortunately it is only for the PS2, maybe he will work on a PS3 or Xbox 360 version soon?

This is my third Lego guitar, made for use with the Playstation 2 versions of Guitar Hero. While the Explorer and Warlock guitars are regular six-string guitars, this controller is a four-string bass guitar, modeled after a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass guitar.

I gutted the real controller, taking out the electronic boards and special working components, and placed them inside a Lego chassis of my design. Every working part works as well as they do in the real controller.

Rock Band Rant

rock-band.jpg
Rock Band is probably one of the most fun games to play during this holiday season, you can easily spend a few hours playing it before you even realize it. Oh and once you play Rock Band you realize that poor old Guitar Hero is a joke of a game in comparison. Rock Band really has a great lineup of songs that get you even more into the game and introduces the concept of the cowbell and tambourine, how can you say no to a game where you play the cowbell?

The guitar is pretty straight forwardly similar to Guitar Hero except now you have the addition of a Bass guitar, but he game really shine s with the microphone and the drums, both of which take some getting used to. My main gripe with the game is once you create a character he/she is stuck with the instrument they started with, so I can’t have one character that plays all four instruments. Another major problem with the game is that the setup times can be quite extensive especially once you first get the game and have to create 4 new characters, this can take up to a good half hour to figure out the different modes and who is doing what.

Rock Band - PS3 vs. 360 comparison

RockBandOkay, so I recently had the opportunity to get some real hands on time with both versions of Rock Band for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and here is how it breaks out. Both games are for all extensive purposes identical for either system, you can form a band or play solo tours or just rip up some quick play with friends. Each system needs an update to run the game before you even start, the PS3 version requires the latest system update as well in order to communicate with the Rock Band servers and upload your scores. Graphically the two versions are also identical, but lets face facts you aren’t getting Rock Band to look at the visuals, your playing for the music and both versions pack a punch.

As for the peripherals, this is where the two versions differ a bit. The drums and the mic are identical between the two systems, but the Fender Stratocasters are different. The Xbox 360 version has a wired Fender while the PS3 version has a wireless version, now a lot of you like me would probably give the edge off the bat to the wireless version, but I think I prefer the wired. The wireless version requires you to have a small dongle hanging from your PS3 and also requires 3 AA batteries in order to run, the biggest offense on the wireless is that in order to change out the batteries you need to have a screwdriver! What engineer thought this would be a good idea?

Fender latest to sign on to Rock Band

fender.jpgGuitar Hero 2 really set the bar for interactive music games.  Electronic Arts is teaming up with MTV and Harmonix in an attempt to cash in on this phenomenon with the game Rock Band.  This game will integrate ALL the facets of a rock band including guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.  Fender, the legendary guitar and bass manufacturer has signed on to have not only their products exclusively in the game, but the immortal Fender Stratocaster that Wayne Campbell finally made his own.(No Stairway)  There is no word on a drum company that has signed on as of yet, but expect someone to quickly jump on.  Here is the best part:  the guitar controller will be modeled exactly like the legendary Stratocaster.  Expect an immediate update as soon as we have it. The game is slated to be released for both the PS3 and Xbox360 later this year.
