I Could Care Less About Facebook on Consoles

Facebook

I use Facebook a lot. Multiple times a day. It’s great for catching up with friends, sharing information, and connecting through multiple sources with Facebook Connect. I do all of this on my mobile devices and laptop. But in its current form, Facebook on consoles is useless for me. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely see the potential there, but right now it’s pointless.

PS3 Getting Facebook Too

Leaked pictures last week turned out to be true. In an effort to not be left out in the cold, the PS3 is getting Facebook integration “soon.” Sony posted a little walk-through of firmware v3.10 last night. Still no cross-game voice chat. And for fuck’s sake, Sony, can we please get auto synchronization for Trophies? Anyway, how do you all feel about the update?

360 Dash Update Coming Tuesday

Facebook Screen 2

Those of you who weren’t lucky enough to get in the Xbox 360 Preview Program haven’t been able to play with Twitter, Facebook, and Last.FM integration on your console for the past few weeks. Trust me, you aren’t missing much. But in case you can’t live without these new features, the update will go live this coming Tuesday, November 17th.

We’ve been playing around with the update for a while, and it’s just okay for me. I fired up Facebook and Twitter once each, but have used Last.FM quite a bit. Not a bad update, but nothing as big as when we first got Netflix on the 360.

Spare yourself from some Modern Warfare 2 action this coming Tuesday and grab the update. You know you want to stalk people on Facebook on your living room TV.

Spore is on Facebook

spore islands

The Spore franchise continues to expand and grow. EA announced yesterday that Spore Islands is available on Facebook. Actually it’s been available for about a week, I’ve been playing it with a friend. You pick an island then build and color your creature utilizing DNA points. Friends can send a creature to your island and you can build one to send to their island. During observations, you can see the creatures eat, fight and lay eggs. The one with the highest points win.

During observation

You earn points when you or someone else observes your creatures. It’s a fun little game that is a nice break from Farmville and Mafia Wars. The only downside I have found is that you can only earn 12 DNA points at a time. To get more, you have to spend money. The incentive to spend the money is to buy hats and parts to add to your creature. I’ve not seen a need to spend money on it but it’s still fun.

Civilization Advances to Facebook

CivNet

A few days ago Sid Meier, the man much revered and cursed for creating the uber-amazing 4X series Civilization, announced the coming of Civilization Network to Facebook. Farmville eat your heart out. A step up from Civilization Revolution (which only left my DS for Scribblenauts) CivNet looks to grow solo, co-op, and competitive play in a persistent online Civ world.

If you never found a reason to join Facebook, this is it. I expect this to be a total time and life suck. I hope it works on Facebook Mobile. You have until 2010 to get your life in order for this one. In the meantime you can join the official page at http://www.facebook.com/civnetwork

Impressions: Xbox Live Update

Facebook Screen

Networking communities these days harp on and on about the closeness of their members.  There are so many out there on the internet that it’s hard to distinguish which ones are which? Well, I guess that’s only true if you were to ask anyone over the age of 40.  It doesn’t matter whether the community is your lame ass company putt-putt tournament featured on ESPN 4, or online friend communities like Myspace and Facebook, they all try to bring people closer together (and even some people you don’t want to).  Yep, I’m talking about Herbie “Pervy” in Accounts Recieveable.

Microsoft is set to add content from the Facebook and Twitter communities for Gold members of Xbox Live hoping to tap in to even more communities.  Also in for the update is the addition of an online music service called Last.FM and a new HD streaming service in the Zune Marketplace.  I happened to do the last write-up on the other major update to the NXE here, and I’m doing it again since I got into the preview program. Konami Code Hits Facebook, Gaming Nerds Defeat Facebook Nerds

Facebook

If you have a Facebook account, go to the home page of your profile.  Type in, U U D D L R L R B A  Enter.  That is the UP arrow key, not U and so forth. You get a real annoying glare and some light arcs that mess with your soul. It is always fun when geeks invade other geeks’ space. Although, there is a lot of hot chicks on Facebook. Not too many on XBL. Send pictures.
