Impressions – Brutal Legend Demo

Brutal Legend Box Art

Brutal Legend is the long anticipated heavy metal saga from DoubleFine, and Electronic Arts.

The basic storyline is very good, you are the greatest roadie that ever lived. You die on stage trying to save one of the snarky hip-hop/rock band members that you work for (I think this is a not so subtle dig at Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park type bands). You are somehow magically transported to a world were Rock and Metal are not just music and legends, but ethereal powers and tangible weapons, such as The Seperator (a battle axe) and Clementine (your trusty Flying V Gibson guitar).

Rumor: Microsoft in Talks to Buy Electronic Arts?

EA Logo

In what would be an unprecedented merger/buyout, there is chatter on Wall Street that Microsoft is in talks to buy Electronic Arts. As you know, EA is the largest game development studio and has been gobbling up smaller companies as well. There is no concrete evidence that this deal is going to happen, but sources say there is definitely “chatter” out there. EA’s share price jumped 4% and Microsoft 0.9% amidst this chatter. IF this were to ever happen, would MS close out sales on its franchises to Sony such as Madden, or would it only allow certain titles to be mulitplatform and keeping the rest for itself?

Bioware: Mass Effect 2 “Just Months” After Dragon Age

3715652292_48bee51a70

Often times, game publishers will give loose release dates – “sometime in the next couple months”, “next year”, “when it’s done”, which reminds me a lot of what I tell my boss when he asks if I’m actually working on something (hint: I’m not.)  Today, Bioware managed to tighten up that release date a bit, stating that Mass Effect 2 would indeed be dropping months after Bioware’s new shit, Dragon Age: Origins.

Oddly enough, Bioware doesn’t have many other games in development, other than Star Wars: The Old Republic, so I’m not sure why they feel the need to state this.  The important thing is that the tentative date for Mass Effect 2 has been moved from “early 2010″ to “months after Dragon Age”, although in reality that could mean five, seven, or even twenty six billion months.  Or Dragon Age might just get pushed back again and we’ll be stuck with waiting for both games.  Damn you, Bioware.

In the mean time, why not check out the latest trailer for the game, featuring one of the new party members?  Warning, spoilers for those who don’t want to be spoiled, or for those who happen to live under a rock.

I, for one, cannot wait to start having intergalactic sex with blue aliens again.

Buy Dragon Age: Origins New, Get Free DLC

dragonage-500

Just off the heels of news that Dragon Age: Origins was pushed back a couple weeks for release in November, we get news that EA is offering some pretty substantial bonuses when you purchase the game new instead of buying it used, and this, of course, includes pre-orders. If you buy the game used after release, you’ll have to shell out hard-earned cash for the same DLC.  Hit the jump to see the new game and pre-order bonuses.

The Brutal Legend Soundtrack is the Harbinger of your DOOM!

Brutal Legend Screen

As if we needed any MORE reasons to buy this game immediately.

”This soundtrack took years to put together as we wanted to represent every genre of Metal, and also have the perfect music for every epic moment in the game,” said Tim Schafer, President of Double Fine Productions in the press release. “It’s designed to be loved by Metal fans, and for those who are not, it will either convert them or make their heads explode… or both.”

“It would be a grave disservice to merely use the term ‘Ultimate Heavy Metal Soundtrack’ here,” said Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music and Music Marketing for Electronics Arts. “Instead, what we’ve unleashed is without question the most mind-blasting, face-melting, skull-shattering alliance of Classic Metal, Thrash Metal, New Wave, British Metal, Black Metal, Power Metal, Doom Metal, Death Metal, Hair Metal, Goth Metal and Industrial Metal ever decreed by The Gods Of Metal. Its very existence will condemn your soul to eternal brütal damnation. Yes, it’s that good!”

The ante has officially been upped. Over 100 tracks from 75 different bands.

See below for the entire list of tracks/bands featured in the Brütal Legend soundtrack.

Lawsuit Over Brutal Legend Settled

Brutal Legend Screen

The lawsuit over the release of “Brutal Legend” starring Jack Black has apparently been settled.

Los Angeles Superior Court spokeswoman Vania Stuelp says attorneys for gaming giant Activision notified a court on Wednesday that they had reached a settlement over “Brutal Legend.” The company had sued to stop the October release of the game by rival Electronic Arts.

A notice of settlement has not yet been filed, and attorneys handling the case did not immediately return phone messages.

A hearing scheduled for Thursday was canceled. Activision’s attorneys were set to argue why San Francisco-based developer Double Fine Productions should be barred from releasing the game, which features Black as band roadie transported to a mythical ancient world.

This is GREAT news to me. Jack Black can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned, and this game looks awesome. I hope this bodes well for the release date too. *BLARGH*

Free Daggers with The Saboteur From EA

the-saboteur-preorder

The Saboteur looks like Crackdown meets Nazi’s in Paris.  Pre-order and get an in-game dagger.  I repeat this is an IN-GAME dagger so all you little kids in east London don’t need to run out and buy this… unless you have something against the Germans.  I guess EA learned they shouldn’t distribute real illegal weapons like they did with the Godfather II Brass knuckles debacle.  EA really needs to work on their licensing agreements, take a page from George Lucas guys.  Hit the jump for a random selection of screens.

We have already seen the Bourne films turn into video games but now the entire IP, and all of Ludlums other IP’s will be published by EA in this multi-year deal.  Development of the first title is underway by Starbreeze Studios out of Sweden and it will be a Jason Bourne title.  Full Press Release beyond the Jump.

EA Annouces MySims EVERYTHING!

EA had a slew of press releases today.  My personal favorite was the announcement for 2 new MySims titles to expand the MySims franchise.  MySims Racing and MySims Party will be released for Wii and DS sometime in 2009.  You may now rejoice.

MySims Racing is… well… self explanatory.  You race, with MySims.  Think Mario Kart, but with MySims.  Exciting, I know.

MySims Party is a collection of 50 mini-games.  Think Mario Party, but with MySims…. noticing a trend?

Please note there was no announcement for Paper MySims, MySims 64, or MySims Brawl were received today, but I will keep my eyes peeled for these gems.  At least we know what The Mario Studio The Sims Studio at EA has been up to.

Football Academy For DS

EA Sports has announced their first DS exclusive, Football Academy due out in March 2009.  Not NFL, this is Soccer to Americans.  Football Academy will present a variety of mini games testing players knowledge of football/soccer such as technique, strategy, and positioning.

In other words, football addicts, this is another way to absorb yourself into your sport and ignore everything else.  I suggest practicing going “Uh-huh”, “Yeah”, and the all classic “Innit” while playing games on your DS.  This way your partner might not be as angry with you as they really should be.

This game is aimed at all ages, so I’m not sure how many cockney, swearing, hooligans will be up for purchasing this to play on their younger sisters pink DS.
